Dreams and Art
Strange dreams! I've had them all my life and these visits beyond The Wall of Sleep have been a major (if not THE major) influence on my art.
Lucid dreams! Precognitive dreams! Vivid, meaningful dreams!
How weird! This probably won't be the last video I make on the subject but I thought I'd take the time to talk about a few of the more memorable experiences I've had whilst wandering around inside my own head.

Tim you legend! Dreaming and drawing is 100% my jam- like yourself I had some very striking dream experiences as a child which I could not ignore and once I learned about the phenomenon of lucid dreaming (seen that film Waking Life?) I dedicated a large chunk of my 20's to pursuing them. I go through phases of journaling and over the years filled many and have dozens of memorable lucid dream experiences (and many many more banal or wasteful ones!)- I could happily talk on this subject for hours. Since I fell off with it I still find I'll spontaneously have a lucid dream a couple of times a month, though remembering them clearly is often a different matter. One habit I keep up though is I have a chime that goes off on my phone on the hour and I do a quick 'reality check' (bung up my nostrils and try to breath through my nose), the idea being that as the chime goes off through the night I'll occasionally attempt it in my dream and wha-la. Gotta say the surprising autonomy of dream characters and sense of an intelligence 'behind the curtain' so to speak has to be one of the most intriguing aspects imo. A weird one for sure 🌐♦🔸!

2:19 I've seen something very similar in a dream - almost identical. It was on some kind of metal surface in outer space with a purple gas giant overhead. These tall beaked wraith-like things were having what seemed to be some kind of convention. Far more numerous were much shorter beings waddling around with similar cloaks and masks. It felt different than most dreams I have in that I was aware that I was dreaming, but I felt at the time that I was seeing something that was really happening. Very odd.

I am a poet. One of my favorite literary figures is Neal Cassady, the muse of the beat generation. One afternoon this past summer I was walking along the railroad tracks in my hometown thinking about his untimely death from exposure and/or organ failure on the tracks of Mexico, what must have been a miserable way to go, plus the looming dreadful potential to be run over by a train, though this didn’t happen and his body was found the next morning. With these thoughts in mind I attempted to construct an image of how his death could’ve been more dignified and peaceful, immediately summoning the line “fawn sleeping/forever/in the warm tracks…Neal I wish your death/had been as sweet as that.” Not 100 yards later as i rounded a bend, I saw, in the southbound track, a seemingly uninjured fawn curled up…dead.

Fascinating story. I draw and paint portraits of dead celebrities. In one case, I drew an actor and the next day I found his autograph at an antique store. Another time I painted a singer from the 1930s, and the next day an album of her old recordings turned up at Goodwill. The most startling one was I was working on a pencil portrait of an actress while I was listening to some rock music on UA-cam. As I was finishing up, the channel automatically switched to music from the 1940s and the song she loved and was identified with popped up by surprise. I need to research more of what Jung theorized the root cause of synchronicities are, but I definitely noticed them far more when I was young. I feel many of my experiences had little-to-no profound meaning surrounding them, but I try to note the key aspects of my synchronicities just in case. Last year, I began law school. I had one research class where the professor gave out little gifts (things he would get at the dollar-bin at Target, such as candy, face masks, lip balm, etc.) to the first student to get answers to problems he would pose correct. That morning, despite having only seen the film once in middle school, I couldn't stop thinking about the film "Misery," namely the scenes involving the sleeping pills. I happened to win one prize, and he gave me a blu-ray copy of "Misery" (he never before nor since gave out DVDs as prizes). I found that strange and thought "well, the universe must want me to watch this movie again." I didn't have a DVD player, but I wanted to watch the movie, so when I got home, I streamed it. After it was over, the autoplay feature put on "Good Will Hunting," and I decided I would watch the first half. I got to the scene where Matt Damon defends himself in court. He gave a speech where he used the word "syncope," which I had never heard before. I looked it up and learned that it meant a condition where one is prone to fainting. The next day, while in between classes, a student who had vied with me over the answer that would win the Misery DVD prize me got up and stood at the front of the room by the podium, just chatting with the other students in the front row. All of a sudden, I got the strangest feeling, and just thought to myself: "something really bad is about to happen. She's going to faint." Five minutes later, that student said "I can't see," went pale in the face, and then fell to the ground. Students rushed to help her and I ran outside to get security to bring EMS aid. I came back in and she she was lying on the floor, sweaty, but conscious. She said "don't worry, this has happened before. I have 'syncopy.'" Of course, this all could have been coincidence, but if it were not for the overwhelming feeling that I knew she was going to faint, I would not have felt such a magical feeling around all of the syncope-synchronicities (the sleeping pills and Misery, my fixation on Matt Damon's use of the word in GWH) of those past 24 hours.

Had one recently too. Unsure of work/starting teaching. My mom has a dream im wearing a cream coloured sweater... day goes great. I jokingly say lets see if that somehow plays out today. Sure enough, one single student with a cream coloured sweater was overtly helpful all day. Your video showed up on my home page--really thought provoking stuff! I've been working on a surrealist video game for the past two years and I've been trying my best to honor the synchronicities I encounter. I named the game after a strange string of words that I encountered in an online music review. At the time, it just seemed like beautiful word salad. I went home, created the title screen, and immediately knew it was right. Two months later, I visited a social media profile of the writer who's inspired the game. His newest post announced a 10,000 word epic poem based off the silent film Metropolis. The name I had selected for my game was "Uncertainty of Impending Metropolis." Freaky stuff.

7:40 It’s interesting that you posit the possibility of it being a mere coincidence. Your video shares an interesting anecdote, one that I find relatable. What this brought to mind is liminality-that your distress from estrangement, like what one might feel from grief or loss, pulled you into a world where synchronicity entered more into your awareness. It’s easy for the skeptical mind to brush aside such things, but I find this pointing to a magic that mystics knew and that emerging science will better embrace. Like how your comic opens you to worlds where the improbable is possible, so goes our consciousness and the interactions we share in the world. Playing in this way opens us to the scrutiny of the critic or skeptic, but (once overcome) reveals layers of existence that defy understanding from previous models or belief structures. Finally, I leave you with this. I was writing a poem on applying fire (energy) to dead or dying things in your life, then letting these relationships go, rising from the ashes, and applying this fire to what inspires or excites. My wife, in the midst of this, shared with me an astrological reading for February (which is not typical for her to do), which incorporated all the themes from the poem. A poem with which she had no knowledge I was writing. A poem I had written to exorcise/expiate a relationship and gain clarity on the direction of my life. There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle. (Einstein quote) Synchronicities are everywhere. Embrace the limitations of the rational mind and embrace a magical world. Thank you for creation! 🙏
