Math is how we make sense in a world that makes no sense. Just like we use time to describe how things move. It does not make it real by any standard.

Math was invented to understand and predict the emergent properties of physics. Math is the invented part. Physics is the discovered part. There, I said it.

The way I see it, Relativity is about time & space, while Quantum Theroy is about matter and energy. I think the reason so many people are having the devil of a time trying to unify them as that they can't bring themselves to understand that space and matter are different in the most fundamental way - sort of like the yin and yang of reality.

The notion that math is discovered does not contradict that math is an inherent property of the universe. They're not mutually exclusive ideas. I don't see a problem with that.

And a coin in your pocket is in superposition until you pull it out and look at it. Flipping that coin in the air demonstrates how that superposition can be understood in reality.

Hanna keeps drawing the conclusion that Maths are discovered simply because they accurately describe what we see happening in the Universe. That doesn't mean that Maths are intrinsically out there as a physical part of the Universe that exists independently. Maths are just a language we invent to describe what we see happening in the Universe. The fact that it can predict things we didn't know are out there just means that we have done a good job inventing an accurate language. We are just discovering new things about how the Universe works through the invention of Maths. The physics of the Universe just exist, and Maths is just a highly refined tool we've invented to describe them. Maths only exist in our minds, just like colors and sound. It's just an interpretation of what we see going on around us.

I say math is discovered in the very same sense as Russell's discovery of its inconsistency and Godel's discovery of the incompleteness theorem.

Quantum is NOT invented, if you can break a wave function by mere observation then there is DEFINITELY a link and it's not an invisible force it's most certainly entangled.

Surely a barber than is getting his hair cut NO LONGER becomes a barber as you cannot practice being a barber if you're the customer? Doesn't this description STILL apply? If you can no longer be a barber if you're getting your hair cut, still stands then surely the statement is still correct in its definition?

Always surprised at how close objective and subjective topics crossover, the further and deeper you delve into science and mathematics the more it begins to be Philosophy and Religion, and vice versa of course.

The claim that human -invented notions of mathematics is the language of universe is purely a careless statement of human extreme ignorance because all human -invented notions are objectively and undeniably human constructs which are descriptions of human subjective understanding of merely the observable in the physical universe to human extremely limited knowledge , but not any sort of intrinsic physical properties of any form of matter. The most dangerous and fatal enemy of human species is their own subjective understanding based on their ignorance of the physical universe used to serve their own subjective purposes, and human invented notions of mathematics are the best living examples of human subjective understanding or misunderstanding of their own place in the universe. The laws of nature have created humans species, but not the other way around as how ignorant human individuals have been trying to make false and foolish statements on human invented notions. Some of numerous flaws of human -invented notions of mathematics are the notions of negative quantities, positive quantities, irrational quantities, nought or zero, imaginary or complex numbers, the unprovable notion that negative x negative = positive, time units Such human -invented notions are merely representations of human wild imagination or the non-existent which never ever exist anywhere in the infinite space of the physical universe, being merely human -invented notions in human mind and its notional operations, confined within human -created subjective reality. From their fundamental misunderstanding of their own invented notions of mathematics, ignorant human mathematicians and human scientists have come up with such nonsensical claims as the string theory, the big bang, the absurd and irrational claim that the universe is expanding, despite the fact that the space of the universe is already infinite or the only one form of matter which can represent infinity, and claiming the universe is expanding is the same as foolishly claiming that infinity is expanding, spacetime, space curvature , superposition misunderstood as 2 different states can exist at the same time, despite the fact that such a notion merely describes human -invented notion of probability, the 2 probabilities of 2 different states are equal, while being still unknown to human subjective observations, but not such nonsense as on and offf can exist simultaneously. In order words, all human current destructive development comes from human subjective understanding of the physical universe and their own place in it

"Someone came up with the clever idea of zero." This is a bald statement with no basis in fact - it's part of a system of belief. If one-ness and seven-ness exists independent of us, then so does zero-ness, and zero itself. We discovered that zero completes the system of numbers, such that the negative numbers and the positive numbers do not exist each in their own space, but that they all occupy the same space, and that zero is the means by which they connect.

Exciting presentation. Please do consider yourself guilty of hiding from your fans the weird concoction (invented or unearthed by Rowan Hamilton on a bridge in Dublin ) called QUATERNIONS ? Your next exposition of infinity should include Churchill s : " I had a feeling once about mathematics that I saw it all. Depth beyond depth was revealed to me. A quantity passing through infinity and changing its sign from plus to minus. I saw exactly why it happened and the tergiversation was inevitable, but it was after dinner and I let it go."

If you claim to be the BEST barber/hairdresser (dentist, doctor, architect, computer programmer) then who do you go to to have your own haircut? You must settle for the second best, unless you cut your own hair. I have often asked who my barber goes to to have his hair cut. A question they are often unable or unwilling to answer. By recommending someone else they risk recommending their competition.! The Barber's dilemma!

So quantum mechanics is telling us distance doesn't exist. If you change one position, the other particulate thats 2 light years away changes at same time.

What would happen if we dropped the objects from a distance in a vacuum where the center of mass of the falling object and earth was above the surface of the earth. It would seem that what we are trying to detect via the experiment is the difference in mass dependent time dilation between two minuscule masses. It would seem akin to trying to measure the difference in a second between a stationary person and a person moving at geologic speeds. It would also seem important the setup of the objects being dropped. Is it a single 3 body system or 2 distinct 2 body systems. It would also seem important what unit of time is being used to make the measurement and how accurately we can measure the unit. If we measure the rate of change in distance using a time unit of centuries short durations of time might appear the same but not be equal.

@39:46 “like a light being on and off at the same time”. Is actually a very good example. If you watch incandescent lights in slow motion you can see them turning on and off as the phases change.. but it is not visible to the naked eye. So, it all depends on what you use to measure something with. Which in turn will also affect its state….

Well, with the Barber's Paradox and the clipper/not clipper set paradox, can't we create a third set for those elements that fit neither set? _And,_ if a person shaves himself then isn't he in fact _also_ a barber? For me, 'mathematics' is becoming more and more like a sophisticated 'word-game' that produces descriptions so precise that they lead to paradoxes thus necessitating _new_ descriptions which themselves eventually lead to a paradox and on and to until we end up with an infinite number of descriptions to describe a finite set of elements. What if the barber goes to _another_ barber in order to be shaved: does that mean he is _not_ in fact a barber? This is why we get absurdities such as 'infinitely dense' singularities and so forth. In other words, I am saying that there is an 'Ultraviolet Catastrophe' embedded in the roots of _any_ descriptive language which, I would argue, is what lead to 'discovery'. Just a quick philosophical point. :)

This series and the way concepts are explained is enjoyable but not patronising. Hannah Fry makes people interested in stuff they may have assumed they weren't otherwise. Bring it on. If its too lowbrow for you you may have missed the point of why this series existed in the first place. I love this. Bye.

Why do we question the existence of math, but we don't question, in the same way, the existence of color, shape, etc... It's all the doing of our own consciousness.

You won't actually be able to understand mathematics until you can understand that all human -invented notions of mathematics are human construct to represent human subjective understanding of the physical universe. Therefore, they are extremely limited, and applicable to only subjective reality created by humans . If you can't see that there are numerous flaws and contradictions in such human invented notions, you are merely like a photocopying machine, or a parrot repeating some text line without having any clue of its actual meaning.

You’re building a dichotomy that does not exist. There are people who sometimes shave themselves and sometimes don’t.

…which is irrelevant to the explanation. The “Barber’s Paradox” is about the barber, who can’t simultaneously be someone who shaves himself AND someone who is shaved by a barber, given that a barber is someone who shaves men who don’t shave themselves. It’s not about the non-barbers, like me, who may shave themselves, get shaved by a barber, or not shave at all. I fall into all three groups.
