The background is that throughout the movie he is constantly bullied, either directly or indirectly by this big oaf. Throughout the movie, you’re actually saying to yourself “he has tons of these bigger guys around him, why doesn’t any of them catch onto this and step in and put dude in his place?” I believe the director did that on purpose for this scene. Dude was fed up seeing homeboy getting slammed.
