Hello.
Thank you for taking the time to view this channel.
This channel is no way meant to macabre, ghoulish or tacky, rather, the goal of the channel is to shed light onto the absolute horror in which was the historic era of anthracite coal mining in the anthracite coal fields in Pennsylvania. Sadly, only a handful of well-known disasters are looked back on, occasionally by only a dedicated small niche group of local historians. Day in, day out, from roughly the 1840s to the 1960s, tens of thousands of men toiled underground removing the highly coveted rare anthracite coal. Unfortunately, well over 30,000 would perish violently underground and on the surface, some are forever entombed underground. Hopefully through historical research, primarily audio, some still images, this channel can shed light on the nearly countless smaller tragedies these men suffered. They deserve remembering.

Pennsylvania's Lost History, Underground Abandoned Anthracite Coal Mine Hoists, Part 2!
This is Part 2 in my series of abandoned Coal Mine Hoists.
Link to Part 1 is here: ua-cam.com/video/evGL989rBbE/v-deo.html
Hello! Thanks for taking the time to watch this video and read this text. Please be sure to like & subscribe if you haven't already. This is just one part of several videos planned that I'll be producing just on Anthracite Coal Mine Hoists alone. So be sure to look for future uploads.
In this video, we take a look at some abandoned underground "Hoists" in Pennsylvania's Anthracite Coal Mine Country. To be be precise, we visit 2 Anthracite Coal Mines to visit these hoists. These machines were vital for the haulage of coal. The lifted and lowered coal cars up & down "slopes" that were essentially underground tracked inclined planes. This was truly the beating heart of the Coal Mine as these Hoists facilitated a lot of the coal movement.
Hoists shown in this video were from:
1. S. Flory Manufacturing Company, built in Bangor, Pennsylvania
2. The Vulcan Iron Works, manufactured in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania
All the photos in this video were taken by myself. Used a ThruNite series TC20 flashlight for my lighting. I highly recommend this brand of flashlights! They have an amazing lineup of products.
Please stay out of abandoned mines of any kind!

@@Sleezax thanks man!
Who's at fault here 🎉🎉😂 can't tell which way is up at points
Thanks for the history! I love exploring anthracite coal mines (vicariously at my age). Had many miners from Mount Carmel in my family. Took a trip back last Fall (first in about 50 years) and thought a lot about playing on the culm banks and romping through the woods (after being severly warned to watch for holes) with my male cousins. My fraternal grandfather (according to the obit) died coming back from Natalie colliery late at night when he fell into an air hole. We looked down some very deep holes, and encountered old slopes, and the giant Sayre double shaft, but were always too scared to go in. Found lots of fossils though. Brought two large, beautiful hunks of coal back home from this last trip. Makes me feel good to look at it. Stay safe!
Thank you & you're welcome. I'm sorry to hear about your Grandfather. The Anthracite Industry was vicious like that. No rhyme or reason why bad things like that happened it seems. It indiscriminately just took so many people away sadly. That's awesome about your continued love for the Region. I love Mount Carmel. I appreciate the rocks and coal myself. 🙂
Phenominal photos of the old hoists................This should be offered as an elective at one of the Community Colleges on the Anthracite History of Pennsylvania. Good stuff man!
Hey Robert. Thank you. You're too kind man.
Hello! There will be a Part 3 & 4 showing even more Hoists! Oh ya brother!
Good stuff man!
Thanks man. Appreciate it.
At least it didn't bite 😮
Take it home and give it water after dark lol
True. It's still down there doing its thing still though. LOL. Such a ridiculous thing.
@AnthraciteHorrorStories I do love how you and the other so called kings of coal guys here in the youtube world leave things behind. True love for the sport! And you have the history lessons behind footage so that's why you have the crown my friend lol.
@@beardedjerky445 Thanks man, most of the stuff just rots down there to be honest however anyway. Literally just brass items will remain! Even copper rots down there which is wild! Hahaha, I'm no longer affiliated with anyone else that does this hobby officially. The others still think they're exploring caves, have no idea what they're looking at, etc. lol.
@@beardedjerky445 I've told you before I think, I love Crowder.
I've seen faults and fault lines on underground maps but never in person. Awesome.
@@wyattkindler496 hell ya, that's cool you've seen them on maps. This spot is the coolest geological anomaly I've ever seen underground. In this mine, a lot of people got 💀 from timbers falling I've read in accident reports. I was wondering what that was all about. Makes sense now when the fricken coal is vertical!
I have seen the same car here in Chicago it was the Chevy Beretta and it was the teal color just like this one it was the indie version just like this exact same car just driving in the streets passing by but it looked beat up though😅

Welcome.
The suction will still pull you if you arent paddling from a good distance away too
It's been filled in with concrete and the water is equalized in pressure now. There's no whirlpool.
So I learned recenty that coal is basically fossilized peat. It undergoes chemical changes if it is buried. So this makes perfect sense. Never even occured to me that fossilized forests would be found in coal mines. Really cool vid! Bet ya find some pretty interesting stuff in there!
Thank you. I do. Please watch my full length videos and my other shorts, you'll see the cool stuff!
Very cool.
Thank you.
Stunning God's creation is so stunning
👍 it is!

Hell ya man!
No matter what you do you crack me up🎉🎉.
Thank you!
I see you're not a coal miner you're a UA-camr that goes into abandoned coal mines. I'm okay with that I can still respect that and appreciate that I totally subscribe I've seen like 15 years videos. But I love the fart the best🎉🎉🎉
Hahahahaha. Thanks. Ya, I'm not a coal miner, just a casual observer of old places and a historian. My ancestors worked these same mines however. I appreciate you watching.
Let's go with its original. Thank you to the MEN that did that job before you. ❤❤
Let me just say much respect. You do work underground yes you deserve respect. Fart on baby fart on🎉🎉🎉

@@davebrock4463 hahahaha. "So there I was...in this coal mine 😐"!
Seems like the miner would have to be bent backwards and reaching up all day while the coal was falling on his head or his face. Just when I thought coal mining couldn't get any more difficult!
Ya, I still don't understand the vertical coal. Next level madness. They'd periodically have platforms up there...
Is this forest gump?
Forrest Coal
Coal is literally made within a few weeks from the mixture of top soil, vegetation, and volcanic ash. Trees grew on top of the ash, and formed a layer over time. Its been proven in laboratories. This isn't millions of years old, more like thousands
Petrification too?
@AnthraciteHorrorStories petrification is just trees or animals pressed under the soil over long periods of time and then exposed by either floods, and massive erosion or heat. I've literally seen clay under my property turn into stone within 30 years or more from a previous strip mine, and im now digging a pond where it was stripped. The clay turned to rock over the course of 35 years at a depth of 12 ft deep. It doesn't take millions of years to create rock. The entire idea of the age earth is billions of years old is a lie from hell.
