Sheep Jones Art as Storytelling: A Slideshow of Finding Your Own Narrative in Abstract Paintings
I was born and grew up in Waterville, Maine. I studied art at the University of Southern Maine. I now live in Belfast, Maine. I work in oil and wax.
My paintings begin with layers. From my past work in watercolor and wax I’ve held on to the opportunities that mixing transparent colors offers. Layers add extra interest, leaving swatches of colors in their wake. These are perfect tidbits for the imagination.
I always am looking for the puzzle pieces to suggest a narrative. Disparate images finally come together and start to hint at some kind of sense. The thing is, all people have stories. Often, they will look at one of my paintings and recognize in it their own story, their own past, their own dreams.
I have exhibited my work in several solo and group shows and galleries in the US and Europe. In 2003, I was chosen as Artist of the Year at the Torpedo Factory.

The Magic of Process Painting: A Slideshow of Letting Color Lead the Way

My subject is color. I am a process painter, meaning my work emerges through the engagement with the materials themselves. Paintings are rarely planned or preconceived. The first mark leads to the next, and over time (often many months) the painting unfolds. My painting process is intuitive, exploring color relationships, primarily, and the space and light created within and around color. Ultim...

I have never ceased to be fascinated by ships and the sea. In fact, marshlands and boatyards will do just as well. I am amazed by the craftsmanship, design, and beauty in the building of a ship or for that matter, a simple skiff. I love the stark beauty of the wetlands, the sheer power of the ocean, and the inherent structures in the docks and warehouses of a working waterfront. So much of what...

Great work. I know that you probably worked all your life before becoming an artist, and that's admirable. I think that the most discouraging thing though, is I have worked all my life as an artist and still can't get a gallery to show my work. Many galleries in my large west coast city tell artists there is a 4 to 5 year waiting list. I think, sadly, that what it takes to get into a gallery is to have money and pay them to take your work. I'm sure a big deposit check really helps change minds. That is the most difficult thing emotionally about being an artist, you can't have the studio space you need without having money, or even get into a gallery with offering them something to jump the line in front of someone else. It's why so many artists like myself, are discouraged from doing artwork or even sharing it. There isn't a gallery in the world that most artists can get into without offering a big check as influence. Again, I think it's admirable that Bibby was a business woman who worked most of her life and made a ton of money, but I don't think galleries are being fair when they forget their long waiting list because you got someone who can write a big check. It's sad that money dictates how much influence and reach an artist can possibly have. There are millions of artists that do such great work who never get the chance to ever show the world their talent because they don't have the one thing it takes, which is a lot of money. Sadly, for many of us as artists, money talks, and it's something most artists don't have. I'm just tired of people with money influencing their way into an industry just because they have money. Just saying, that why don't you all with tons of money try going gallery to gallery for years like many of us have, and feeling what rejection is really like. That is what makes a great artist. One who gets rejected till it almost breaks them, until might they get a lucky big break. In other words, you had to have a lot of money or had something to offer Portland Art Gallery, because I'm sure they had a years long waiting list. It's so not fair, but thats the way the world works. If you got money, you get instant influence. All while most of us as artists can't even afford a space to work in, yet your money buys you a studio among the rich to get that instant influence. It's not fair or right! To say many artists wouldn't be jealous is an understatement. Most would give their left or right arm to be able to jump the line and make a name for themselves. Being a cutthroat business woman is all great, until you barge into the art industry and take those chances away from everyone else. And yes, Portland Art Gallery, you did tell me and many others, that there was a waiting list for years, so I guess money really does influence you.

Congratulations Annie! It was really lovely to hear you talk about your inspirations growing up! Some of my earliest art experiences were with my nature-loving, photographer father at the Art Institute of Chicago, and I still go there with him often. It is incredibly heartwarming to hear about your family's support throughout your journey, as it reminds me of my own parents, who have continuously supported my art. The palette and texture of this collection are absolutely stunning. Congratulations again on the opening! :) <3
