Episode One: How It All Began
In this debut episode, host LaShana, STARs Advisory Council Chair, speaks with Byron, CEO and co-founder of Opportunity@Work, about the Tear the Paper Ceiling movement and the creation of STARs (Skilled Through Alternative Routes). They discuss Opportunity@Work’s mission to unlock opportunities for 70 million skilled workers and how employers can value skills gained through work experience, military service, bootcamps, and on-the-job training, rather than relying solely on college degrees.

This is very interesting, it could change the economy for good and put a side the ones who think they are in control. Which won't be easy but anything is possible.

As a now retired HR professional, I pro.ise you that we used to almost always hire because of attitude, enthusiasm, and potential. These young kids are a menace. One of my last interviews was an LGBTQ person OF WHICH I WAS UNAWARE UNTIL, the end of interview. I was going over job description and she flately stated I will run a register but im not here to clean etc. I had 3 other people waiting. All of a sudden she blurted out her sexual preferences ... and I was a little stunned. I was polite but no way!

Decades ago 4-year degree in the subject in which the company was involved, for a receptionist position that actually required an outgoing personality and no degree whatsoever. Now it is about time these positions including with the state of Maryland were downscaled. Back then there were tons of "underqualified" candidates who missed out. Now those candidates are retired! Serves the workplace right for having set such barriers back then.

The opportunity is always looking for Talent. Think of it in NFL terms. Every position on the field needs high caliber athletes performing at their best. Same thing for IT. So how do you match talent to the opportunity? Easy, discipline the student with fun cognitive development to learn the skills of the opportunity. Read, Practice, Certify.

To accelerate learning, students must be able to see the big picture from day 1. Also, the training environment must be fun. Once you mix a clear vision, active fun engagement, and discipline you get learning at its finest.

It's about making it fun. You learn faster when you're having fun. Piaget proved this.
