Sailing Moai a Wharram tiki 26
United States
Приєднався 9 кві 2019
Building and sailing a home built Wharram Tiki 26. I'm 63,64, 65 years old and get to build my own boat. That's awesome. I never dreamed i could do something like this. I started work on New Year’s Day 3 years ago. Part time at first. Then I retired and went full time. 2 1/2 years to complete the build. Now I’m on the way south.
Fun in the sun! Nothing like it
We just barely made our destination before we got our daily shower.

SAILING MOAI BEAUFORT AND CAPE LOOKOUT

Hello my friends! We set off for Beaufort NC and on to the Cape Lookout light house. Man what a trip that was. Tides in the wrong direction wind in the wrong direction. But we plowed through. Once we got to the ditch everything changed to our favor. We set the main and averaged 5-6 kts down the ditch and even hit 8 kts a few times with just the main up. On our way back from Cape Lookout we almo...

We pulled out of Beaufort and headed up the "Ditch" to the Neuse River and over to Bishops Marina. Not without some chop we had to turn into the wind and it was pretty rough going up river and upwind. we finally got there.

We took some time off the weather was nasty that week so we went back to the house for a bit. We came back to the Marina in Carolina Beach and loaded up. Carolina Beach feels like home to me I've been going there on family vacations since I was born. Yes 67 years I've been coming here. It feels like I know the water here and where all the spots are. Very comfortable. So on to Beaufort nc. Anoth...

Suweeet 26 Tiki! Never seen one with a hard dodger, but love the concept. Would love to see below decks. Would also like to see details of the autopilot. Kudos from the Hei Matau!
I'm not a sailor, butt, id have 3 lines going to the dingy in tow . . .
@@briansouthworth737 if we go out on a real long or rough sail it’s usually on the front deck
Keep going you got this!!
I lived in Panglao, Bohol Philippines several years ago. around 2009 they built some WHARRAMs there on Panglao. A Filipino guy named Dominic, spoke PERFECT English was running the building. AND while I was there Mr. Wharram himself was there for awhile. I did meet him and had a great chat with him.
The music is a pain!! Totally irrelevant 🤔
❤
6:31 probably could find music that isn’t noise though
Wow looks like a good day to be home in a warm house with a hot chocolate a comfy chair and a good book or a tele movie. Hope the sun comes out for you soon. Maybe make your wife a hot drink and throw her a blanket if you have one at hand. Take care Cheers
@@ianbell5611 it was crazy
We were wondering how you were doing just yesterday. Thanks for sharing, things look a little damp eh.
She hasn’t posted in 2 years. She has a bad sense of danger but more power to her.
So she is alive.?
You have done a beautiful job. Nice looking boat.

I just re-watched this. So nice. Hope you are doing well. Can't wait until your next video. Hooe it is soon. I guess it is hurricane season and hot too. Sept 14th, 2024. Weather will be getting better soon in another month or so. Thanks again. - Chuck in Jensen Beach Florida.
You’re awesome! So far I watched every video. I just bought a 28’ project wharram and this is helping me a lot!

The hulls are designed to flex, so how can the centre superstructure not be destroyed by the flex.?

@Sailing Moai, thank you for this video. I thought I’d watched all your videos but I missed this one.? Just watched it today. Thank you, Captain. XOXO

Just completed binge watching every single video on Sailing MOAI. Great job. You sir, are a Legend. Keep the videos coming!
Please describe your anchor set-up. 10 Kg Rocna? with how much chain and rode? Do you carry a dedicated stern anchor? Do you carry any anchor spares aboard?
I noticed from a shot of your aft decks (canoe stern) that there is no upper deck stringers (triangular section on the plans). Did I miss this? or are they eliminated from this build?
@@N62INFINITY there are 3 deck stringers in each of the rear decks along with the 2 top stringers outside each hull. Is that what you needed or am I in the wrong place
@@sailingmoaiawharramtiki2615 I mean the topsides one, down the middle (center) of the topsides deck. I didn't see those on the videos... (I'm getting old too, so forgive me if I missed those)
@@N62INFINITY oh you mean the one on top of the deck down the center?
@@N62INFINITY I did not put any on top of the deck I felt like it was just something else to trip over
@@sailingmoaiawharramtiki2615 Yes! That's exactly what I'm talking about 👍. So, you can confirm that there has been no issues or concerns with the lack of that stringer on the top deck, down center? I have plan-set #511 and also thought that stringer would be more of a hinderance. I love the clean look without it, but wondered structurally if it had to be there. Seems like 'not really'?
the video quality (the way they are put together) is getting better and better too
Another great video! Thank you for doing this. I have a couple of thousand questions for you, but I'll just ask two of them here right now. What brand of rope (and size) did you use for your Rudder attachment, and No. 2 - what do you think of your Rolly Tasker sails? Would you buy that brand again?
@@N62INFINITY love the sails have had zero issues the rope I would have to look up it was the best I could get from west marine. That was local to where the rudder fell off and I went through everything they had.
Thank you for the video! I like them all. Chuck in Jensen Beach Florida.
Great video. The shot in your video. Was that Cheseapke bay?
@@ianbell5611 most likely it was the pamilco or some place in Florida
Great video. I'm tantalizingly close to getting my Tiki 26 sailing before the end of the month for fresh adventures! This video is the perfect motivation. 🙂

Best boats out there
How can I love this more than a Thumbs Up Like??? *wink* I LOVE THIS! Of Course nothing of substance comes without some work. I understand. Nothing can replace the adventures for the Heart Soul and mind. With the "Trying times of rough conditions and the good times. As you faced both. <3 I know the former Navy guy here, speaks what a Spiritual experience he had "sailing" on the water. Even though much different, same in some ways. Though to build from zip to sailing, WOW, how Gratifying for the Soul. I can only see and try to imagine. xoxoxo
From before in the planning Stages and assembling the wood, supplies to the Sailing of Your Boat and seeing the adventures.... I have Been Blessed by You and Your Family. You All continue to teach us about life through this as well. Our Posse' and I can't thank you enough for being on the ride of life and through your labor of Love with **"Sailing Moai" ** God Bless You as much and more, as you have Blessed and continue, for us. :-)
Who was flying the drone as you were pulling away at the end?
My son set that up. He was riding in the truck and operating the drone from the cab. I would have crashed it for sure
Thank You so much. I am sure to watch all your videos. I will watch this again so I can comment on some cool details that I saw on your boat that I want to ask about. Thank You for sharing! Chuck in Jensen Beach FL. Glad you are safe! Keep on.
Thanks for posting, a great video. As per previous comment. You and your son are making memories, I have fond memories of sailing with my Dad sadly he's now passed away but the memories live on. Cheers Take care
just wondering , whats your closed point of sail? Thanks,
I would say around 50-55 degrees
Copy that on the close hauled pointing angle. As a former Hobie 18, Prindle 19 beach catamaran sailor, if you pinch the boat too close to the wind, it really slows down and makes alot of leeway. If you crack off a bit, the speed picks up substantially. What you are looking for is VMG to your windward target. Velocity Made Good. You can practice this measuring apparent wind angle versus VMG when beating to windward. Record what you get for different wind speeds. Make a cheat sheet for reference. Note that if there is a lot of chop, you need wind power, sail trim, and don't pinch to close to the wind to make good headway to windward. You will be surprised at how fast you can get to windward marks compared to a lot of monohull sailboats. Just saying.... Chuck in Jensen Beach FL.
Keep the boat moving at relatively good speed and you can get it to go where you want. A little practice to find sweet spot between apparent wind angle and boat speed. Chuck in JB FL
Her Dad be proud
Ideal sailing conditions , you and your son are making memories !
Man we did that day
Hello, follow your channel. What is the average cruising speed of a Tiki 26?
I would say around 7-8 knots. I’ve reached 13 knots 1 time. Too fast for me😁
Esse e o veleiro dela? Se for ficou show bem atualizado do que vi no #sal
Great video . Reminded me of my time at NAB, Norfolk Virginia back in 1994 I was there with the Australian navy picking up what was the USS Saginaw and after her decommissioning from the US navy became HMAS Kanimbla. The guys at NAB would have what they called the Beach bash on from memory pay Fridays setting up at the junior ranks beach they had live music, great food and even this refrigerated beer truck that theyd park behind a trestle table and they'd screw the beer taps into the side of only time I've ever seen such a truck. It was always a great night. Thanks for posting Cheers
Thanks so much 👍
Have y’all done a full boat tour inside? I’ve seen a few videos where you can see parts but not a full boat tour. Love the boat building just trying to judge the size
I need to do that thanks for reminding me
What engine are y’all using out of curiosity. Looks like it pushes y’all pretty good
Tohatsu 8 hp
Wish I had went with a Yamaha they are quieter than most others
Oh yea with no current it will make 5 kts
Would love to see a full tour video! I’m now dreaming of building a 26’ Tiki!
I just discovered your page today after finding Wharrams. You just went through our home town of Beaufort NC. Bummed I missed yall but we were outa state visiting our new grandson.
Yes sir we’ll be back there soon I’m sure
Let us know before you come through. Would love to meet y’all and see the boat if you don’t mind
I’ll do my best to remember 🤞

Thanks again for sharing. I'd like to do the ICW in the near future. Land locked currently caring for my elderly parent.. Working on the refit of my sailboat a 28' monohull on a trailer. Enjoying the adventures of others at the moment. Cheers and safe journey. S/V Cork~Texas 🇺🇸 ⛵
Texas I would love to do the Texas 200 one time.
I just went through losing my mom. If I could get her back I’d trade just about anything. She was my biggest fan!
Thank You. Sorry about your boat damage. You are an excellent craftsman! Be interesting to have an estimate on the cost of materials to make your repair. Seems like an advantage of building a wharram is that the raw materials to do a replacement or a fix are fairly easy to obtain and you already have the proven skills and experience to fabricate new parts as needed. Cheers, Chuck in Jensen Beach, FL.
It’s hard to say what the cost is I have fiber glass and epoxy and paint on hand most of the time so really all I purchased was wood so this time it was only about $60 turns out I use epoxy and fiberglass on a lot of different projects even the house a couple of times 😁
Great trip. 🐬 ⛵ 🤗
Well done love the music as well well filmed.
Thank you so much
