Snail foot movement seen through glass.

From Wikipedia: Land snails move by gliding along on their muscular foot, which is lubricated with mucus and covered with epithelial cilia. This motion is powered by succeeding waves of muscular contractions that move down the ventral of the foot. This muscular action is clearly visible when a snail is crawling on the glass of a window or aquarium. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Land_snail Just in cas...

    the muscle wave looks like it is moving from back to front. I am trying to work out whether the snail slime is thixotropic (so gets less viscous when it is squashed), or dilatant (where it gets more viscous when squashed). I think the front to back wave suggests it is thixotropic. Any suggestions?

    Hi. I own the same saw. It is a beast. My only disappointment is the fence, the plastic part of it that locks on the rail is very cheap plastic and breaks easily. Does anyone know where I can order the previous model of the rip fence ( the one which had the sliding aluminum attached to it which can make the fence longer). Thanks Check out TOOLSTOP video review of this same saw and you'll understand what I mean.

    Really cool DIY there. Good design, looks like it slides very well. I'm thinking of trying this on an old cheapy guitar I have lying around. Wish you had even a short vid just strumming chords or holding a note and moving the pickup so we could have more of an idea on the changes in sound. Just noticed this is from 2017, have you gone any further with this idea? Changes/improvements?

    Thanks for the video.. I have a question.. given your restricted work space and given the choice again would you go for the new ultra compact table saw DeWalt have just released in the UK.. it's dimensions are the same as their flexvolt table saw only it's 240v corded..

    • @alexnosheds
      @alexnosheds 5 років тому

      chevyimp thanks for watching, hope it helps. I haven’t seen a price for this new saw you mention yet, but if the dimension specs are the same as the flex volt model then the blade will be quite a bit smaller so cutting depth will be not nearly as good. 77mm vs 61 on the Flex I believe. This may not sound like much of a difference but especially when the blade is tilted you’ll see this cause issues with thicker stock. The body is only a little bit smaller and actually there is a point where the table on a saw can be too small, it’s actually good and safer to have a bit of surface area around the blade so material is supported as you put it through the saw. I’ve since moved to the garage with this and frequently use other table etc to support as a temporary outfeed table with things that are longer than say 50cm or so. I guess it’s also a price question: this DW745 will be an investment, and if the price for the compact model is comparable but you don’t gain much, it’s maybe not worth it. Flex models are very expensive to run not least due to the batteries, so maybe it won’t be as pricey as the flex version. There are other brands and models out there now so if you can try them out even better - the size is one thing but you’ll have a subjective response to them too. It also depends on what it is you need the saw for, and how much accuracy you need (the DeWalt fence system is very very good). There are other things about these little saws that are annoying (noise levels for example, and the throat plate that comes with it is not ideal for accurate cuts on very small stock, so I made some zero clearance inserts). So it’s a matter of weighing up these pros and cons, and what’s in the budget. Good luck and let me know what you end up with, and how you like it!

    • @alexnosheds

      Peter Haughton it’s a good Allrounder saw Peter. Depending on your projects you might want to consider a better blade (I have a 60 tooth one for ready-to-glue finishing cuts, and a flat-tooth-blade for flat-bottomed trench cuts (“dadoes” and “rabets” to some). The top will scuff and wear off (it’s a coating of some kind) over time but the important things all work. Once it’s set up right that fence is absolutely excellent.

      @@alexnosheds Thanks again for the help. My new DeWalt 745 just deliverd. Riving knife and blade dead accurate. Fence rock solid. Lots of power. Very happy. One more question please. • @alexnosheds
      @alexnosheds 5 років тому

      quebraho hi again, and thanks for letting me know, and congrats to the purchase, hope it works out well. It all depends on what you are planning to do in terms of projects and cutting work. If you are cutting across the grain, or need very fine (ready for gluing) cuts, I would definitely recommend getting a good quality blade like that. If you’re cutting rough timbers for framing houses, perhaps the one that came with the saw might be ok. I have been using that Freud blade for almost everything since I got it and it has held up really well, even with acrylic sheets, very resinous wood, reclaimed wood, man-made woods like hardwood ply, MDF, hardwoods like beech, oak, walnut, it’s always great. The cheapest one I could find that delivers to Germany is this one at screwfix (i recommend ordering before Brexit happens, it could get bumpy!): www.screwfix.eu/freud-lp40m-025-tct-circular-saw-blade-60-tooth-250mm-x-30mm-bore.html The other blade I have is a flat tooth blade with I think 28 teeth, it will leave a flat bottom cut which is good for box / finger joints or trenching cuts. The more teeth the blade has the slower you can cut, so if you are cutting with the grain (rip cuts) a lot, maybe a combination blade with 40 teeth from Freud might be a good idea and also possibly a touch cheeped to buy. I think the finish will be almost as good as 60 tooth but I haven’t tried it- I just take very slow and gentle cuts using the 60. Let the saw do the work - don’t force it). Let me know if this helps and alles Gute nach Deutschland! 😊🍻

    • @alexnosheds
      @alexnosheds 6 років тому

      James O'sullivan Hi James thank you for commenting. There are differences between the US and the UK version of this saw which is why the power switches are different. I agree with you though, it’s quite fiddly, not least because of the awkward placement of the switch. I had a quick look and if you are not willing to modify your saw (and therefore potentially void your warranty with DeWalt which I strongly suggest to register online by the way) you could invest in a power switch into which you plug this saw (or any other machine for that matter). There’s one called AUKtools NVR Switch on woodowrkersworkshop.co.uk (just the first thing that came up) but there will be other models and other sellers, worth a google anyhow. Hope this gets you started. All the best - Alex

    • @goodnewsscotland3547
      @goodnewsscotland3547 6 років тому

      No Sheds what inspired you to want to do this ? I was always intrigued about the different angles or positions of the bridge pickup (like jimi Hendrix strat where it’s angled the opposite way moving the thin e string pole magnet closer to the neck) I have seen a video of a guy do a 5 pickup strat with all the possible parallel tones (but not series or combinations of series and parallel , never mind all the phasing , tone cap possibilities etc)

    • @alexnosheds
      @alexnosheds 6 років тому

      I preach you preach ok maybe I’ll do a follow-up video but I have pondered the multiple pickup question for quite some time. The available space doesn’t really allow that much room for multiple pickups, and in the end this was me trying to prove that change in tone is mostly about where on the string the magnets grab the vibration. I originally began working on this a while back after experimenting with microphones and acoustic guitars, and then I read somewhere that Leo Fender couldn’t play the guitar but spent hours plucking open strings and moving pickups back and forth minuscule amounts. Then I held one guitar face to face to another electric guitar and played the one but let the pickups of the other pick up the sound, and moving that around to achieve different voicings. Then I wired up a pickup to a cable and held it freehand in front of a normal electric guitar, strummed it, and moved the pickup around. It was fascinating to hear the difference. Then one day my toaster died and that shaft was just the right length and smoothness. That was the beginning :-)

    • @goodnewsscotland3547
      @goodnewsscotland3547 6 років тому

      No Sheds very interesting. Yeah it’s fascinating stuff. I have always been a fender stratocaster fan/user. Or any single coil pickup guitar. As you will probably know how much talk there is over pickups and pickup selection etc. Lots of money in guitar parts. There were forums /pages called “guitar nuts” and “guitar nuts 2” that were full of different wiring diagrams /ideas etc. I did attempt a multiple sound wiring with a few switches but failed miserably as I didn’t know what I was doing at the time but wanted to revisit it . I’m not sure if you have seen “the answer” guitar which uses the same sliding pickup idea. I would love to do a few guitar, maybe a one pickup guitar (less magnetic pull on the strings ) A two pickup (like the answer which has a video on UA-cam with 2 single coils which switch between series and parallel giving you a humbucker or single coils) And well, maybe I would keep going up to 3 or 4. There’s a few 4 pickup guitars out there with interesting tones

    Mate, your safety is your own business and all that (and I hope this doesn't sound at all patronising) but as someone who has seen severed fingers left on saws, I strongly encourage you to make another push stick/buy a push block and keep your fingers away from the 150mm radius of the blade. You may not ever do anything wrong, but at the distance your hands were to that blade (even with it down so low), other factors only need to be small (the wood pinches, the piece kicks-back, you sneeze, trip or slip, your lightbulb blows, it could be anything) for you to end up having a really bad day. Im a blade guard and riving knife user, but I still keep my radius clear and respect the tool 100%

      No Sheds yeah I thought it might be the US version, you did show the flip over in your video. I've got an Elektra Beckum table saw but as its so bulky it has only left the workshop twice. Biggsy1970 yes it fluctuates a bit each week. You might also find reconditioned ones on EBay (from reputable sellers obviously) if you’re not fussy about the finish. I think this one is manoeuvrable enough yet accurate enough to be a great option in your case. It’s got some drawbacks (not as quiet as an induction motor, for example), but overall I’m very impressed.

    • @alexnosheds
      @alexnosheds 6 років тому

      Biggsy1970 the handles are quite good, sort of inset into the bottom of the table top. Only thing to watch out for is setting it down on the rear side if you’re storing or transporting it upright, as the known to move the rack - and - pinion fence would suffer if it had to bear the weight of the saw. I think people get the stand also because it adds protection for transport, but (as you can see) my tiny shop is too small for the stand :)

      No Sheds I have one that same colour , had it at work in about 2005, was sitting on a cheap swivel chair that I bought from Argos , leaned back the chair snapped, I went flying backwards onto the floor (in front of a student I was teaching) and the guitar hit the radiator , which left a few ripple marks in the wood, and I still use it to this day, still going strong haha

      I preach you preach indestructible :-) this one was originally black, I stripped it many years ago and put some clear wax on it. It lost about two pounds of weight that way ;-)

      No Sheds ah.., there is a black one I have too, and a silver . You can pick em dirt cheap used, great for modding or adapting
