Tied some new flies yesterday on jig and normal hooks. Sadly I don't have any size 20 or 22 jig hooks, so I had to use normal hooks. A couple of grayling rising on the Aire. Saw a large fish on the river bed, a trout or grayling, that was over one foot. After not feeling it, I decided to try the Wharfe where there were more fish rising. Had a take, it jumped and lost it. It was only a few inche...

I decided to go fly fishing on the River Aire in the Yorkshire Dales. The water was dropping after flooding. The river had some colour but was clearing. I tried wet first but with no success, and seeing fish rising, I decided to change leaders and tie on a dry fly, a size 20 F-Fly. This brought one fish to the net, I missed 4 others. I have now caught up with videos. I should be going fishing o...

My home river where I grew up at Addingham. Never fished streamers but I’m going to try it!
From March I hope. Can't wait to get back on the river after all this cold weather
Hi David, thanks for posting. Is this the Broughton No.1 beat of Bradford No. 1 AA ? Thanks.
Opposite bank on the first half was No1.
Great video, lots of nice fish there, I used to get some massive Trout around Steeton, nice to see you fishing back in Yorkshire.
The white bird looked like an egret.
Correct. It was
Nice
Stunning bit of country there David, shame about the blank, but the unreliability is part of the charm of these spots.👍
Can't beat Scottish West coast! Estuary/sea loch fishing fascinates me. Never forget the Isle of Mull, sunset as the tide quietly creeps into a wide Estuary and the sea trout swirl and dimple. Hooked 2 out of maybe 20 plucks to the flies!!! Happy days 👍👍
Beautiful skies there, even if the fish weren't as cooperative. I got the notification for this video straight away..
I regret not rushing back to the cottage and grabbing my camera! Maybe next time
For radioative fish?
Try using smaller hooks mate foul hooked first two fish I saw you catch
I only had the lures delivered on the Friday before I drove to Scotland, so I didn't have any time in changing hooks or buying new ones. Like I mentioned in my video, I may change the hooks to singles at some point. The first trout I caught, I should have known better and not cast in the direction of the small rise on the surface. I knew it was a small fish, (although saying that large fish can lightly take small flies off the surface). There are times when I'll catch fish that don't hook themselves in their mouths.
@@daelpixphotographyTry a single small circle hook
There's a joy in being alone in a place like this. I enjoyed your monologue. Did you require a permit for the sea trout?
Yes I needed one but you can only fish it if you're staying on the estate. Everywhere requires you to have a permit to fish for migratory fish in the UK. If the area you're fishing is away from the estuary, I believe it's marked as the sea, so you don't need one.
I was meant to say 2 years ago since I've been. Not 1 year.
Lovely West coast setting! Glad you managed a sea trout, fella! Personally, I dislike spinning where small fish are around (hooked in the Gill, back, head, side etc. Much prefer fly but o suppose its quite a distance to where those fish were holding? 👍
I was a bit surprised when I caught the second brownie. Glad they've returned after the spill. I prefer fly too, but I wanted to test my new lures out. I might change the hooks to singles some time. The fish are mostly always along the opposite bank out of reach. But some do tend to hug the same bank as you, and I sometimes cast along the bank. In past years I've caught small pollack/saithe and they usually take all the hooks in their mouths, they were annoying. Thankfully I haven't seen them in some years now.
What river are ewe fishing? 🐟 😎
It was a river belonging to an estate on the West Coast
So much for you can only catch sea trout at night.
What do you mean?
@@daelpixphotography Everybody else seems to fish for them in the dark.
Is that Lochgilpead?
Lochgilphead is about 15 miles away
@@daelpixphotography fished that spot a few years back including the tarns close by for wild brownies. It was great fishing. I have some videos on my UA-cam channel. Think it was back in 2016/2017
Well done mate! if its the river I think it is, its incredibly difficult in low, clear water and bright sunshine. Although out of season, that grayling gave a good scrap and was a very decent size! yes, the smell is intoxicating. 👍👍
Oh no you watched my first ever video😬
Tough luck there, but it still looked like an interesting evening! next time....👍👍
Were you on the Wharfe today. Thursday. Flat cap ?
No I'm not fishing this week. I'm off to Scotland next week, so expect videos the week after :)
The bird near the start of your video was a Little Grebe (Dabchick). The Lower Hide isn't closed yet, I was in it today!! Some great sightings Hobby, Marsh Harrier, Kingfisher...and images! I only live a couple of miles away so it's my local patch. Cropping is a fact of life with wildlife photography at Leighton Moss I'm afraid, I use M43 Lumix G9 and 100-400👌 TFS, cheers Alistair 👍
I read on the notice board near the toilets that the hide was closed when I was leaving. I use the 100-400mm lens and hate cropping. I bought the RF 800mm lens but all the photos apart from a few out of 2000 shots weren't sharp, so I got a refund. I bought a 1.4x extender for a little more reach, but even then I still have to crop. Can't wait to own the 200-800mm so I can reduce the amount of cropping. (Wish I owned one now because I'm going to Scotland in 2 weeks this weekend. Could do with it for otters.) In most cases, I prefer to fill the frame with the subject rather than cropping all the time. I didn't stay long at the Causeway Hide because there wasn't a bird in sight between the island and the hide. I didn't see any bird of prey that day. Never seen a kingfisher there before. First time seeing the red deer up close. Doubt I'll be back until Mid-October and onwards.
Nice one 👍
I've never really got on with that stretch at all. There are some good fish in it though.
Grayling can be really frustrating on dry fly.
Lovely to see my favourite beat ... it would be good to see the flies you are using - perhaps you could show them to camera ?
Have a look at Richmond and District Angling Soc waters. Some lovely spots to fish with good access and reasonably priced.
Thank you for the recommendation, but it's too far.
Around 50 years ago, when I fished Roundhay Park Lake, there was a fella who fished "Caster" on the Fly rod & did very well with some Big Roach. I used to also fish The Nidd (Hammerton Mill & railway length) and the Wharfe (Easedyke, Gimston park & Ouston farm)
Get well soon.
I see you also have wood pigeons signalling 'RI, RI, RI' in morse code.
Those old Silstar rods are underrated. After experimenting with lighter and heavier rods, the 2 lb Silstar carp rod is my favourite bit of barbel tackle. Photos show it bending a perfect 90 degree arc to the butt, in a way modern rods never do. Sometimes older is better. Impossible to imagine a 2lb test curve rod being labelled "carp" nowadays. Managed a 9 pounder out of a snaggy swim, and forgiving for chub and smaller fish.
The rod used to me my uncles, who gave it to me. The tip has been replaced with a quiver tip section.
Circle hooks are a very very very old design originally intended for use with long lines. The fish engulfs the bait then turns dragging the hook back out of its mouth. The inturned point then nicks the corner of the mouth hooking the fish. There is no need to strike. In fact sticking can be detrimental. It's better to just slowly pull into the fish.
There seems to be more larger chub up that way compared to further down. As for intro/outro, I'm not really bothered either way. What I want to know is why UA-cam hasn't informed me of new videos from you.
From what I remember about this part of the river, is that there are good fish to be caught, but you have to find them first. I know that the spot I was in where I caught the barbel can produce decent fish, and there's a spot further downstream where I drive to (don't know what episode is), that there's always a chub in the same spot that's around the 5lb mark, and there's another spot where I've caught some nice chub above some rapids, which is the first 'car park' that I went to when I first recorded this part of the river........ That's UA-cam for you. Unless you haven't clicked the bell? (Although saying that I don't know how long before you get informed that the youtuber has posted a video because I don't click the bell myself).
A very nice fish.
At last a true representation of a fishing trip. I know that stretch well. Brilliant to watch
Thank you for the comment Jay. I can honestly say that it was the worst year for me. I only returned back to fishing after a 4 year break. I don't know if it was me, or just the fish but I didn't catch any chub or barbel. Two weeks ago proved much better (last two videos on my channel) at this location. I'm hoping to be back this week, unless I go walking.
I caught my one and only barbel on the Nidd - at Cowthorpe. Nice video
hello great video! can you please show the rigs you used to catch those chub? thanks!
Sure I'll do that in my next video!
@@daelpixphotography ok
Brilliant video, keep them coming .
Thanks, will do! I'm planning on going tomorrow, or Tuesday, so look out for a video :)
Hi, which Wharfe beat is this ?
Addingham
They have probably turned onto your worms as the higher water levels release them from the soil on the riverbank.
The fish do tend to wake up when the river starts to drop. Don't like wide angle at all I find it annoying that everything is bent.
Agreed with the wide angle. It's ok for different scenarios, this isn't one of them
Is this Bradford no1 water cowthorp
@@nathanmcintosh2527 No this is the Upper Nidd. Cowthorpe is 27 miles farther down the valley
I'm going to have a go up there very soon. I've never found it easy but there are fish in it.
New video coming tomorrow :D
@@daelpixphotography Look forward to it.
I just fly fished kirkstal stretch been a few years since I fly fished just need some tips .
I'm sorry I haven't fished it. I would suggest you joining www.flyfishing.co.uk/forums/ ..... You'll get a lot of good advice.
This was my favourite stretch of The Nidd for over 40 years until 2 years ago. I made 2 visits and never caught a fish or even saw a fish rise or any fly life on the water. I assumed there had been a pollution incident. Can anyone confirm that? Based on what I have watched today it looks like the trout have returned. By the way 40 years ago this stretch held massive shoals of grayling and they all mysteriously disappeared virtually overnight never to return.
I was once surrounded by spawning grayling standing in the middle of the river about 25 years ago. Only seen it once. We've also caught one grayling per cast a few times. My father and I have caught some decent sized trout there too. But we stopped going due to joining Bradford City and life. Yes there's plenty of fish rising and fly life when I was fishing it. I only started going again 2 weeks ago. Going again next week since it's had some rain so hoping to catch more fish then.
@@daelpixphotography Many thanks for your reply. I fished here stalking brownies predominantly on dry flies and caught a number of 2lb fish and lots 1lb plus also. Splendid sport in such a small river. I'm glad that the fish and fauna have returned as last time I was there as mentioned in my first post the river was barren and seemed to have a silty residue covering the whole of the river bed. I may give it another go this season now but as it's a 100 mile round trip for me I'll have to make sure I have a full tank of diesel 🙂.
@@brianperks7278 I was going to use dry fly but just didn't feel like it. It's a 60mile round trip for me. Bit annoying that the Blubberhouses road is closed, but I'm used to driving to Barden, and then following the road from there. I've asked on the clubs facebook page if there was any pollution. Silty residue? Strange. I'll keep you updated.
@@daelpixphotography There was a major incident reported downstream of Gouthwaite around the same time that caused issues. I believe some groundworks at Gouthwaite went wrong and silt washed into the river. Of course that was downstream of the stretch we are discussing. If/when I do make a trip I'll report back.
@brianperks7278 Yep someone mentioned about York Water causing some pollution.
Really glad to stumble across you channel! It's great to see anglers fishing local rivers like millions of us do every year. Thank you. I fish the Don almost exclusively now and find it difficult to keep up with what water is free or owned. Especially true where clubs / owners don't put signs up. Looking forward to catching up with you other vids over the weekend :)
Thanks for the kind comment
Across the water looks a lot easier to gain access, why are you up there?
Spent more time walking lad!
Doesn't bother me. I'm just happy to be out of the house. What you don't see me doing is staying in one spot for half an hour or longer. But obviously I'm not going to bore anyone with me just sitting there.
@@daelpixphotography Genuinely hope my comment wasn't being negative, that was definitely not my aim!
@@stewartmercer19 No I didn't see it as negative, but you were right.
@@daelpixphotography Cheers man. Just want to see the fishing... even if you blank. I /we want to see the float.. want to see you casting, feeding. It gives info. Especially with your camera which has a huge aspect and view of the area in front of you. Look at that view in front of you especially when you say'listen to the bird song for awhile'...c'mon... never mind the fish....that moment listening to nature....oh yeah......look at that view! I'd also suggest a very smaller float and letting it very slowly drag the worm along thebottom without any weight apart from the worm letting it drag. If it is 2 foot in depth. give it 4ft as a tail... maybe even 6.ft... but with the minimum amount of float possible in weight. Not trying to tell you how to suck eggs...
If you watch last years videos where I fish for chub and barbel, I tend to not catch anything apart from a couple of videos. I hate not catching anything but that's fishing for you. Might be my fault with me not getting out of bed early enough because they tend to bite more in the morning (and evening) than when I arrive. Maybe this year I'll wake more earlier. I chose that aspect ratio because it has the stabilization. I don't want anybody to be sea sick with me moving around so much, especially if I bend down. Maybe I'll try different views :) .... I actually caught more fish taking the float off and leaving the shot on. It was the same last week too. I should have gone back yesterday (24th May) because of the rain we've had but had something to do. Might decide to go next week. Thank you for the feedback it's always appreciated!!
Lovely stuff! The upper wharfe is a magical spot, I hope to get out there myself at some point (same club). Bonny trout too. It's annoying when your video looks good as you finish editing it, then looks crap loaded onto UA-cam, even though its been processed in 4k. 👍👍
Surprised that trout didn't knock it's self out swimming straight into that rock.
Oh that rock. True haha
By the length of the tails it will be a spinner.
Thanks Stuart
Years ago I used to do quite well on foam beetles down there. They didn't seem to work on the LDASA stretch though. That vibrant setting is alright except when filming large areas of grass. It makes it look out of focus to me.
It's the rendering settings I used which is why the video is so bad. The grass (and everything else) looks perfect in Davinci using the vibrant setting, but once UA-cam compresses it, the video looks awful. Such a shame they compress them so much. Looks like I'm still trying to get my head around the rendering settings. I'll be fishing back there next week with floating beetles and worm. I'm sure I haven't seen any beetles there before, or I haven't took any notice.
@@daelpixphotography You're not the only one with problems with UA-cam compression woes. It's often complained about. It's while since I fished up there but sometimes there were no beetles about at all but they still seemed to catch. Good luck on your next visit.
Hi, I usually fish the Wharfe in Ilkley and the Nidd below the reservoir but this upper stretch looks interesting - is it day ticketed and if so what club ? Cheers.
Hi Richard. It's a nice little river. The water is owned by Bradford No1 (the club I'm with) and Leeds Amalgamation has How Stean Gorge and to where I fish. No day tickets for either club. I was thinking about joining Nidderdale for below the reservoir, but I won't think about it more just yet..... No1 has a length at Summerbridge too. Email me via my website if you require more information.
