    It’s insane to have Mobley ahead of Chet. Chet has the ceiling of being a near All NBA player strictly on offense. He combines that with DPOY level defense. His archetype is the most valuable in the league behind A+ offensive initiator. Cher broke two bones after never having an injury pre NBA. The foot is worrying. The hip is not. I’d worry more about Mobley’s meniscus than Chet’s injuries.

      Chet's body type is prime for injuries, so handwaving away the hip is a no-go. Completely agreed with everything else. If Chet didn't get injured, I'd have him competing for No. 1. He has some of the best BBIQ in the League.

    yee yr 2 of this boston team still had jb jt n tro on rookie deals, kyrie, gordon, al, smart, rob williams n a ton of picks. that team was the championship favorite. they massively under achieved and we lost kyrie for nothing that summer (couldnt have seen that coming to start the yr) ....we still went to 4 more ecfs n 2 titles in the 5 yrs since. n btw we still have a 5-10 yr window of contention a head of us along w 6 firsts n a bunch of seconds to help sustain the winning run relative to this okc team i think this boston team did a better job of managing the 2 timeline thing while retaining picks n flexibility. and then okc being in the west... its not clear to me that okc wins more than the current celtics run. its all potential rn

I always hear jokic fans use the argument that without Jokic their team sucks. Well that's true but they aren't that great with him either. In comparison with kd the suns are actually a top 3 seed and when be doesn't play they are pretty much the wizards.

    basically im skeptical bc at the end of the day the on/off concept is essentially a sample of total game/szn/career data that overlaps with an individual players minutes - it doesnt prove causation. where as i know for sure that a player's ts% is influenced directly by that players performance. factoring a stat like ts% into a players impact on winning is a much more transparent process. i feel that the on/off stats can add an unnecessary layer of opacity that can easily lead to misinterpretation if ppl lean n them too much. on/off can hint at value hidden by the traditional box score but ultimately you still have to discover it watching the game. i feel the in game discoveries are a more valuable and convincing discussion point than these stats that ppl seem to jump to immediately now days to build or defend their view again thats how i see it from my limited perspective. is there anything im missing?

  • @kalinwang1

    When regular stats said someone else, you use advance stats to say Jokic. When someone is winning, you say Jokic has no help. Jokic is not MVP. We need to start looking at Giannis or a player on a team with a better record. Giannis leads the league in PERS.

    You don't even have to go to advanced stats really. Jokic is 3rd in scoring, leading the league in rebounding at 13, 2nd in assists at 10.4, 8th in steals (a Center!). He's 2nd in the league in 3pt % at .522. And his team is so bad when he's not on the court that they struggle to beat the worst teams in the league. To say that he's the runaway MVP by any sane measure is an understatement. He's having an elite Hall of Fame season. And he's doing it because his teammates are trash without him and he has to play 37 minutes a night for the Nuggets to have any chance! Nobody in NBA history besides Oscar Robertson in 1962 and Russell Westbrook's MVP season has averaged a 30pt triple double, but Jokic is doing it! It's just absolutely nuts that he's improved his game from his 3rd MVP season last year but we're witnessing it!

    Thanks again for answering the question guys! What I heard was: look for a solid sample size before trusting, be skeptical of outlier numbers - they require extraordinary explanations, and use your brain - which is fair! lol. I have a few follow up thoughts/questions: -are some metrics better at isolating a players impact on winning than others (do some account for more relevant context than others) n why? - do you feel there are a couple metrics that when used together, accurately rank players within a 85/90% confidence interval? - are there fool proof tells, statistically or when watching, that let you know not to trust the data? - do y’all have a mental framework that separates what all-in-one metrics are good at and bad at?

Nate was undeniably the most ardent Jokic skeptic. Everyone can be wrong, the issue I had with his takes pre-title was it was devoid of context(esp. with Nuggets injuries) and entirely dismissive of his playoff performances which were historic even then.

    Why does everyone keep calling Jokic the best "regular season" player in the league? If I recall, during their championship run, Jokic was breaking Wilt Chamberlain records, and setting many other all time post season records. Unfortunately, with the exception of that championship team which was all about chemistry, Jokic mostly plays with a bunch of bums that would be average players on every other team in the league. He's just as dominate in the playoffs, but he doesn't have the supporting cast for consistent playoff success as a team.

      @BOnYTB Місяць тому

      Misuse of timeouts was a huge one, never called timely TOs to regroup/adjust during big opponent runs…just let them keep crushing them routinely. The lack of play calls or really any loose idea of sets/schemes, nothing creative what so ever. Seemed to have favorites, LOVED playing Prince, LOVED playing 3 guard lineups, just a lot of nonsensical stuff. Obv there was no magic formula to be unlocked as said here, JJ wasn’t going to take the EXACT same roster (slightly worse even lol) and turn them in to a 50+ win team. Their only true C is AD, I don’t even see Hayes as a true C. If he is, he’s bad. Like I would never want to depend on him to even play the 13-16MPG AD is out when he plays, let alone playing him for 30 mins when AD sits. They’re depending on Kolokolo rn when Hayes is out which is funny. Vincent is bad, and Vando hasn’t played. Only played 29G last year, but got 76G from AD, and Dinwiddie was semi helpful. At least hit some 3s, same with Prince… (tho he obv played too many mins) but ya it’s pretty clear JJ is just better. He has more buy in, and they’re actually running some plays and not iso’ing nonstop. Using AD as a hub. But unless they improve the roster, (need a real backup C, and at least one more 3&D guy…ideally can get some contributions from Christie or Knecht also) even the best HC isn’t fixing this team. There’s 0 doubt Ham is an actively bad HC though. You just can’t do some of the stuff he did and be even near above average, I’m sorry. I’m a DET fan and I got to see Monty sabotage DET… (really looked intentional, that’s how bad it was) he was one of the bottom 3-5 HCs and that’s being kind. Darvin wasn’t Monty bad last year, but he’d absolutely be in my bottom 5 as well. He also seemingly lost the locker room. So even if JJ is average, he’s a huge upgrade. Add in that the players seem to like and respect him, and it’s a massive upgrade. But like I said the roster is so flawed right now it doesn’t matter that much. He’s worth some extra wins for sure, but unless LAL makes some moves, they’re cooked even with good health. I like something with DLo + JHS + whatever small contract (maybe it needs to be Lewis idk) plus a protected 1st for Sexton and Kessler if possible. Kessler would help so much when AD is off the floor, especially when he doesn’t play. Then Sexton brings infinitely more rim pressure than DLo. He’s not the volume 3P shooter DLo has been, but he’s still a good one…and I think he could increase his volume on LAL enough. He’d be getting more C&S 3s, especially in the corner, and he is/would be a knockdown C&S guy on LAL. Both are young too so they can help now and be around for a while. So if I was LAL and could do DLo/JHS/Lewis and like a T4-T6 protected ‘29 1st for Kessler/Sexton I’d definitely do it. They could open up a roster spot and save enough in a deal like that to sign a minimum guy also, whether that’s now or later on. If I’m UTA I’d definitely do it, a lightly protected ‘29 LAL 1st is quite valuable, and it’s basically all expiring money. If they could get it T4 protected or better you for sure do it, or maybe you can get LAL to amend the ‘27 T4 protected 1st to even T3, and add a ‘29 T3. I’d even consider taking an unprotected ‘29 swap if LAL unprotected the ‘27 1st. Just an idea, trades for LAL are very hard to come up with and I think that one’s decent.

      I would also add, the issue wasn't just Ham not starting DLo-Reaves-Rui-LeBron-AD. It was Ham not starting DLo-Reaves-Rui-LeBron-AD despite all the mounting evidence pointing towards this being the best lineup available, and instead putting Prince in a position where he was way over his head (and I say this as someone who thinks Prince is a useful player and was OK with him starting initially given Vando's injury). Sure enough, once Ham stopped fucking around and reverted to the team's five best players, the results improved. That doesn't mean nobody is ever allowed to change the lineup again. 😂 As far as Redick goes, there is some merit to the idea that people were too quick to anoint him in their rush to shit on Ham. (I also agree with both the Dunc'd On boys and BOnYTB above that this roster is seriously flawed, and there isn't a magic bullet that's going to fix it.) By the same taken though, it's also a bit early to say Redick is "not the upgrade from Darvin Ham the Lakers hoped" - we're only 11 games into the season.

    Injuries are skewing things early. Hard to get reads on the injury riddled teams. Don't care about the cup.
