Thank you for this inspiring video! How did you come to this approach? Do you think reproductions of prints will result in lower quality? Is the printer model decisive-do you need a high-quality professional printer, or is it less critical? It seems to me that you slightly enlarge the image during exposure-is that correct? Thank you so much for your answers in advance!
Hello, yes image is abit enlarged, but not much. The positive is 18x18cm approximately and final image is 25x25cm. I think you can print it on every inkjet printer which is capable of printing in 600 dpi. this is enough.
@ Thank you very much for the reply, your work is amazing!
Stay tuned... I am preparing series of step by step videos, where will be desribed everything.
beautiful print. I think you translated a word wrong. I think you mean exposure and not exposition (to exhibit). Keep up the great videos.
Yes, you are right. The correct word is exposure :) Thanks for letting me know.
Hello, is there any sources that I can't find to learn this process? Do you teach this?
Hello Michael, I am going to share, step by step video workshop (paid) in near future, where I reveal all the steps and possible difficulties of the process. So stay tuned :)
Art historian here. I wish i could convince photographers to drop the "alternative photography" terminology. We all say "historical photo processes" because (obviously) they weren't alternative to anything when they were created. They WERE photography. And now that digital is here to stay, isn't film photography becoming "alternative" to the most dominant technology? Petty point? Maybe. Probably. But it does slightly confuse students.
Hello, I understand your point of view, but I am afraid "alternative photography" is such an established term, that it will be difficult to change it
Missing a pretty important step there, aren’t you? lol
Yes, sensitizing gelatin is missing!
It opens field of possibility. I did it alot but i stopped because it always look flat, compared to an ambrotype made in camera from 3d subject. And the sunlight give incredible results non reachable with electric light . In the end i just try to make repro of prints, outside in the shade, but still not conviced !
I must say I was suprised with the quality... Of course, the camera print is better, on the other hand, it's quite difficult to make a prints outside... I beleive you would spot the difference, but many people dont.
Can I ask how you made the rivet effect round the rocket please. It’s fabulous and am trying to build one myself!! Many many thanks
Hello. Is that orotone print technique ?
No, it isn't. It s a separate technique based on sensitizing gelatin with chromium salt. The gold is used as a background.
I think I missed a big step in this amazing process - how did the negative/print get to the paper? Would love to try this
Hi, it's a contact printing process. You print positive image (because its direct positive process) on transparent sheet (Picrorico for example) put your positive over sensitized board (or paper) and copy the image by exposing it to UV light. As a sensitizer is used digromate salt or diazo.
@@resinotype Ah yes I totally get it - thanks - this is a must try - have a good one
This is just absolutely fabulous, really incredible. Congratulations on a fantastic image. Can I ask what sort or make of foam board you use for the model please, I’d really love to give making a model myself.
Thanks a lot. I am glad you like it. It is nothing special. It's an ordinary thermal insulation sold in our country under the name: XPS Austrotherm
@@resinotype thank you so much for your reply I really appreciate it. Continued success with your photography/art it really really is absolutely amazing 👌🍻
Thanks, it is definitely interesting!
There will be another videos describing process in detail. Stay tuned!
Yep, another "wow". Amazing
Thank you very much
I'm simultaneously struck with two thoughts :- Never in a million years will I try this. And That's the most amazing thing I've ever seen, omg, wow! :)
😁😁😁 After couple of years, you get some practise and then it's not so difficult as it looks.
Is it similar to an Oilprint or Bromoilprint?
It's not similar neither of them. Because the positive is used instead of negative. Principle is different: in Resinotype, soaked gelatin absorbs the pigment in dark places dependig on how was hardened or not during the exposition process
@@resinotype Thank you, so you use water based pigments then? Where is the use of resin in this technique?
@@SD_Alias No, no. Pigment is in form of powder. Resin was used in the past to make the pigment powder to adhere more to gelatin. I use the pigment from laser printers - I guess it contain resin already. Other option is to use natural pigments such us Indigo powder. It work well. See my other videos for more information: photoheger.com/video
@@resinotype Thanks! I will have a look…
This looks great but I would love if you added more info so I could learn a bit about it.
Hi, It's quite a complicated process for beginners, but check out videos on my UA-cam channel, there are more details there. www.youtube.com/@resinotype/videos
Hello Floyz, Resinotype is old photographic process based on sensitizing narmal gelatin (not photo gelatin) with dichromate salts. After sensitizing, gelatin is photo sensitive to UV light. I create the image the way I print positivie (yes, it is not mistake, it has to be positive) sheet and by contact printing I expose the image under UV light. Dichromate is washed out then and final step is applying pigment.
I have seen it before, but still, very cool.
Cool :)
What is the white substance in the first layer?
Hello Theresa. First layer is a glue for gluing metal leaves. I use Mixtion.
Hi David! I really like your work! It’s superb! I was wondering, how long do you soak your dichromate sheet after exposure? And at what temperature? When you apply the pigment is the sheet still wet? Thanks :)
Hello I found your question today. What's a shame! I soak dichomate quite long, 3-4 hours with a room temperature (20-24 degrees of celsius) Gelatin for applying pigment must be soaked with water but not a wet on its surface.
Just great work David, wonderful stuff! Do you mix rosin with the pigment, how do you get it to mix?
Hello Barrie. No I don't mix pigment with resin, It is not necessary. Pigment adhere to gelatine even without it .
A well kept secret ?
I'll add subtitles later :) Sorry.
@@resinotype Hi David, it wasn’t a criticism, it’s such a beautiful piece of Art and process. Many of my printer friends tend to keep some processes and techniques close to their chests... This would be fascinating to explore further with some details. Great video, thanks !
Nice job what glue you use to apply gold
Hi Mateusz, It's called Mixtion
POR QUE NO ESTA EN ESPAÑOL POR FAVOR

I'm a traditional photographer and have to ask if you know that you've branched off into alchemy - maybe even sorcery. Cool! ☺ I'm also an Artist-illustrator who's been using gold and silver leaf for several decades. I can combine that craft with contact printing? Thank you for justifying the very existence of the internet! 🐧
Hello, I think you can combine it but you need large negative. I am printing my own negatives (in fact positives) on inkjet printer
You people are just awesome. Everybody is awesome tho. We just need eyes to observe that awesomeness. Love from india ❤️
What kind of pigment did you use
THIS IS CRAZY! So beautiful!!!
Thank you very much Grant.
Dear David! Could you give me some information about the process. How can I learn it? Do you know a step by step source, which is useful? Thank you so much!
Dear Gergo, I was inspired here: www.alternativephotography.com/the-resinotype-process/ but I slightly modify it. Feel free to ask.
It would be great if you’d explain your process to those watching your videos! 🙏🏾
This is amazing! I'm learning about "new" alternative printing methods all the time! Could you make a more detailed and slower tutorial on how you do this? And this must be very expensive to do with the gold! Subscribed!
Hello James, I am sorry for late reply, but for some reason I did not recieve UA-cam notification... Anyway. Stay tuned next video is coming soon with better description. Regarding gold - it is not real gold it's imitaion of gold used for reparing old furniture. Sorry for confusing :)
I don't get it, you're adding dichromate into the gelatine solution? Or doing a layer of gelatine and then a layer of dichromate on top?
Hello Jack, No, I am painting 3% dichromate solution on top of dried gelatin
Very nice work David! What is your ratio between gelatine and dichromate? And do you prime the gold first?
Stig, I paint dichromate over the dried gelatin, not mixing it together. Gelatin thus dries faster
Hello, beautiful video and beautiful prints compliments. I wanted to ask you, do you print on a negative or a positive? What kind of pigment do you use? Where can I find it? Thank you.
Hello Antonio, I am sorry for late reply but I did not received notification. I am printing on positive - this technique requires positive. I usually use Indigo and black pigment
Hi Antonio, I found that indigo based on the video itself....look at: shop.kremerpigments.com/us/shop/dyes-vegetable-color-paints/natural-organic-dyes-vegetable-color-paints/36000-indigo-genuine.html and for a black like: shop.kremerpigments.com/us/shop/pigments/11324-rhodonite-black.html I will also try to use a powder (black) which is used as an ink in a copy machines.... regards jirka
Can you comment on your light source?
I use Osram Vitalux 300W E27 UV from distance approximately 0,5m
Hello Roger, I use ULTRA VITALUX 300W 230V E27 Osram (primarily used for horses :)))
Very nice. Thanks for sharing.
Stunning. Am trying to find different techniques for my midway show for my residency. I was wondering will you be willing to teach or send me step by step in this? I already have the potassium dichromate. What gelatin are you using? :)
The process is still evolving so may be in the future :)
Hello, I accidentally found your movie when I was looking for information about another historical process. I would like to say that I am very impressed with your work. I'm working in gum bichromate, but I am looking for other photographic forms and techniques. I would like to ask you if you use gelatin or another medium to create the matrix. I wonder if gum arabic could be useful too. I'm most interested in how the dry pigment adheres to your matrix. I would be grateful for your response. Regards Rafał.
Hello Rafal, yes, as a matrix is used classic gelatin. I also experimented with gum arabic, but process is quite different and I prefer gelatin. Pigment, after drying the gelatin, is fixed in the gelatin body, so no worry. In addition you can fix it for sure by some dim acrylic spray
@@resinotype Thank you for your answer. It's really amazing technique. I have a few natural pigments which I use in gum bichromate process. Do you think they would be alright? And I have to prepare a diapositive of course. I usually use saturated ammonium dichromate solution. Will it be suitable? Or should I use potassium dichromate? I am sorry to ask so many questions, but I am very excited about this technique. Although I can see that it is time consuming.
@@MrAlterNus Yes It is very time consuming technique :) Anyway, I use Potasium dichromate 3% solution. Pigments mustn't be soluble in water, but you have to try which works and which not. No problem, fell free to ask.
@@resinotype Yes, I understand. The same rules for pigments apply to the gum bichromate technique. Can I write to your email address if I have further questions? By the way potassium dichromate 3% solution has very low sensitivity. It's really hard to believe that is enough.
@@MrAlterNus Sure, email is fine for me. I use 3% , its enough.
