Trees give us so much - from the air we breathe to the food we eat. Yet, most of us know precious little about them. If you've grown up in a city; curious, yet clueless about trees, this channel seeks to connect you with the trees around you. From tips to identify common trees, to folk tales and mythological stories about trees; from proverbs and etymology, to the history and symbolism of trees, here's where you'll find a variety of snippets drawn from my love and understanding of trees.
I am a children's author from India, published by Puffin, Karadi Tales and Katha, amongst others; and my writing is centered around Indian History, Culture and Nature. Ekavimshati Patra Ganesh Puja: 21 leaf Puja
I am assuming that because of the humidity and relatively warmer climate the Southern Part does not experience a similar Autumn ,and hence only the Northern Part was mentioned. P.S. I wanted to know what people in the Southern part call Autumn if they have a word for it ,and turns out: Tamil -இலையுதிர் காலம் (Ilaiyuthir kaalam): This translates to "leaf-falling season" and (Sharathkaalam): So many of the names here remind me of शरदऋतु (sharadritu) ,and Google said " there isn't a direct equivalent to "पतझड़" (patjhaḍ) in Southern Indian languages like Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, or Malayalam, these languages do have terms to describe the season and its characteristics." I hope I am right ,if I am wrong please correct me.
I can imagine they'd have words because autumn would be prevalent in the hilly areas even though not in the plains...thank you for sharing these words. All new learning for me. Really grateful :)
Hi Mallika , because of this short I went on a short dive in the world of etymology and how words are made. I learnt that both Greek and Latin had words for Olive. Apparently as their influence spread over the other countries in Europe , people started to use those words for their "oil". And eventually everybody started to call "oil" ,oil. So basically the word "oil" is derived from the word (Olive) oil. I hope I got everything right because I am a little hesitant here , regardless thanks for creating an incentive for me to learn something new.
Wow...I had no idea. This is so interesting. Thank you for sharing. I learnt something new. And I love etymology so really enjoyed this. So wonderful it took you down a rabbit hole. That's always great fun :).
nice video
Thank you 😊
Wow!
They should be planted in bigger planters and pots rather than in the ground there is always a solution rather than stop planting them
Sad .... That we tend to like or comment on spicy videos but not to such amazing videos of poems and poetry ❤
Thank you so much for yr appreciation. Please do share it in the circles you know that enjoy poetry...will mean a lot thanks again ✨️
The video exceeds all expectations. This is very well narrated, informative, and accurately researched.
Thank you so much. So glad you think so :)
hi I really recently found ur channel and I had a question which tree who has look like jacaranda and cherry blossoms but isn't poisonous for dogs and good in all weathers cause mp goes extream in all 3 weathers
Hello. Not sure which tree you are talking about. But a tree which has leaves like jacaranda and flowers like cherry blossom could be the pink cassia or the java cassia. Maybe you can Google pink cassia and check if that's what you are referring to. Hope this helps. Thanks for writing in.

Wow this was a great video 👍 First heard about this flower as a kid, through a famous song. ua-cam.com/users/shortsJLPfPAY74Bw?feature=shared
Please keep up your good work. Your videos are really informative and helpful to teach my daughter about the trees around us.
That's so nice to hear. Thank you so much. So glad u are using the videos to tell yr daughter about trees. That is the core motivation - to get people to notice trees. Thank you so much for writing in. Made my day :)
Very very nice information and video
Thank you :) Pl share in your circles. Thanks 😊
Thank u Mallika. It was lovely n informative talk. Thanks for the photo credit as well.
Thank you so much for sharing yr pictures 💕
why look down on the viewer. ……. seems almost threatening
Is that so? Will keep in mind. I film in that angle sometimes because I only want the view of the tree above me and not the road/construction behind me. Thank you for your feedback.
Thanks for the video! I think I recognize Dr Usha, whom I had the pleasure of meeting during the BNHS study tour as part of our field Botany course.
Ah..ok. Small world. Yes, that is Dr Usha. She and I were in the same batch to study Field Botany at BNHS - Dr Swapna Prabhu was conducting the course then. And Usha has been a dear friend and my tree guru ever since. So many people have learnt about trees and felt inspired because of her. Nice to hear from you. Thank you.
Hii I always get confused between bodhi peepal(Ficus rumpii) and peepal(Ficus religiosa) can you tell me how to identify one??
@noname-fy8wz ...so the tip of the peepal is more pointed than the pilkhan. Also, the heart shape is deeper with peepal. With pilkhan, it is more triangular. And in the pilkhan, u can see arching veins at the edge of the leaf. Hope this helps. Thank you for writing in :)
I've always felt the need to thank you in every episode of your tree talks that I get to watch and learn from ,not just on this occasion. But as the series has been growing ,it has also made sure to disperse its seeds of curiosity and gratitude onto us . And it's a product of your diligent work and passion.
Thank you so much. Very happy to read this msg. Very glad to know. Thank you:)

Great info on the Jacaranda! I’ve subscribed. We look forward to more tree info! Being a USA, New England native, I have similar memories of my mom, grandmother and even my great grandmother telling of the stories of how to tap the Maple trees each spring for the sap. They would collect it by hanging buckets on the tree. Taking the sap to boil into their own Maple Syrup on their wood stoves! Then in the summer, there is the beauty of the coolness of the shade that they provided in the heat of summer. Soon, the leaves go from full thick green to their hereditary golden yellow, orange or red! They turn crisp and thin and as they fall to the ground, preparing a beautiful carpet of insulation between the grass and snow……
Thank you for sharing this. So wonderful to hear about this knowledge and experience passing through four generations :) Thank you for subscribing as well.
I highly appreciate this video... currently working on my research paper and I need easy points to explain the tree's features to common people.
@@Yashasvi-jg9dz So glad it was helpful :) Thanks for letting me know.
I am indebted to their courage and strength ,and so is everyone ,as it is impossible to imagine a world without forests. Thank You @Malika for remembering them & keeping them alive . Their stories will forever work as a guide to look up to.
Yes, absolutely. Unfortunately they don't get much coverage or attention in the media. Thank you.

I don't supply seeds :)
Tearing up is normal, I guess. Happened to me at an ancient temple in Kumaon.
Ya... some places and sites just have a certain air that move you and stir something inside :)
The babul tree produces dark pink flowers that smell great. In Tamil this tree is called Paadhiri poo Maram and holds immense cultural and religious significance in Srirangam. But not able to find a single tree now
Is it? Interesting. The tree that we call babul in north india is the acacia tree with small yellow round flowers. What is the common english name of this flower you mentioned?
Jacaranda actually helps in Protecting the flood cities, it's really helpful thank you so much for the information about Jacaranda tree, now I will definitely add this tree to my sponge city projects...
Thank you. Glad you find out useful. But please do check scientific studies. I am not an expert :)
so ive been binge watching your videos, as i love trees and needless to say, im getting to learn a lot. Well, im not sure if u know...but like the jacaranda, there's a similar tree which bears pink showey flowers and ive always seen it accidentally from a distance while driving but could'nt get anywhere next to it to find out more about it, coz it could be a towering tree in the middle of a teeny settlement/patch off a surrounding tea estate...but its just as breathtaking. You need to visit different places in India and do a take on the common trees found in a partcular place. Im not sure if this is the similar pink tree that is there in Bangalore and blooms the city a blush like pink. Do you have an episode on those pink flowering trees, For a minute i thought it could be a cherry blossom...coz ive seen pink and white cherry blossom trees or im not certain if they change colour from white to pink or viceversa as the flowers age.Does the tree have a name?
A big tree with pink powder puff type bristle flowers is the rain tree. It is a very common avenue tree across India..expecially Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, the south. Wonder if that's the tree you are mentioning. 🤔 I Plan to do a series on tips to identify common Indian trees ...short 1 min videos.
Honestly, your channel should be aired on national TV! Such an informed stand from the most trivial to the most important factor that can affect the lives of the billions in our country. No one could or can put it across any better than you do. so unhinged and unbiased. your videos should reach the greater public instead of the non sense that they air as entertainment and so called news these days.
Omg...I am so overwhelmed by your comment. Thank you. It's so nice of you. Really appreciate it :) 🙏
I could'nt help but notice the back drop in most of your videos. It truly is beautiful. Great place to think aloud, seriously. Is it okay to ask where exactly is this?
Videos are shot in different places...wherever I find a beautiful tree and a quiet atmosphere conducive to filming. This one you have commented on (mango diplomacy) was not shot in India. I was in Portgual...and happened to film this there :)
There are many trees whom people have often accused of "depleting" water sources. They have said that about Eucalyptus, Mesquite, fruit trees, and other trees for years. The REALITY is that all trees use up a large amount of water. But trees help to INCREASE rainfall. Research in the deserts in China, India, Africa, and South America have found that when you increase tree coverage by 50,000 acres in a desert area, the amount of rain that that area gets increases in a 10 year period (there will still be droughts in that 10 year period, but there will also be WAY more rain there than if the trees were not there). This is due to evapotranspiration, the process of trees pumping water up from the ground and out through the leaves. The humidity created by a forest mixes with the humidity already in the air. And when there is enough water in the air and the right conditions are in place, clouds form and precipitation starts. So lets keep these trees where they are. Otherwise, you may get no water at all
Thank you for leaving such an insightful detailed comment. Really appreciate it. Yes, I agree this has been a grey area. Several species (like glyricidia and so on) that have a positive impact and were hence planted by the forest department themselves, are now being seen as invasive and problematic, and are being removed by the forest department. As regards City planting, often people plant trees without giving such matters a second thought. The case is for giving preference to native indigenous trees, when new trees are being planted.
i am so happy that i chanced upon your channel. As a matter of fact, I was just as mesmerised when i first set eyes on it and we're talking some 1250 metres above sea level; somewhere in a tiny hill station in Tamil Nadu. When you mentioned about its incredible ability to deplete ground water; Im sure that would be an issue when it comes to here coz this place receives 7 months of rainfall in a year. So taken back i was that i also picked a few seed pods off the ground and germinated some to plant near our home. And did you know, its saplings (may be two years or so ) smell just as sweet as the flower. I am amazed at how the sapling when caught in a gentle drift of breeze brings about/wafts that same fragrance. it confused me first and thought it could be another nearby plant, but then when i actually did a sniff test, it actually was that very sapling. Can you be kind enought to explain why is that so ?
Thank you for sharing your experience and joy at discovering the jacaranda. I can totally relate to it. So glad the channel is reaching like minded people :) Regarding your question, honestly I have no idea! I have only seen jacaranda trees and know the flowers are very sticky. I have no experience with the sapling. Sounds interesting that the sapling has such a strong fragrance. Will try and find out. Thanks for sharing this. :)
It warms my heart to see such videos. GO Native, can't put more emphasis on this. Too many Indian species are being extinct, and are on the red list, yet people have difficult time understanding this issue. It is the human greed for timber, medicine and other resources that exotic species are being imported. One more thing is, human ego, "Look I can plant this species that is from so and so country". I want, I like, I need, thus I will do so, this attitude have and will destroy many Eco-systems. Millions of other species are there in nature that we should consider. Keep up the good work, you are doing god's work.🙏🏽
