Thanks Sandra. And Merry Christmas from a fellow Aussie.
@@I_Mackenzie thanks for watching 😄 merry Christmas to you 🇦🇺
Thank you so much Sandra for this informative video. I love using brushes but didn’t know about the Transform tool or the left and right arrow keys when using a separate layer. This will be so useful 😊
Glad to hear you found it useful 😊the transform tool will be your next best friend. You can use the arrow keys anytime to rotate brushes I find it much easier to use than going to menu.
Forgot to mention I have a video on using the transform tool check it out 😊
Interesting techniques, could be very useful in future. But in your specific image I actually preferred the original sky as it was.😃
Thanks for watching like anything it is a personal preference 🙂disguising the sky was one of the techniques I used in the serious landscape days, still use it now and then
Thank you for these excellent tips. And I take this opportunity to wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year 2025 Friendships from France
Glad you find them useful. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you too from Oz
Do you have a video on how you make the textures from photos
Great video, thanks!
You are welcome thanks for watching :)
Thanks for this great video! How do you do to get such a nice combination between the different colors in your image, here mainly brown and blue. it works beautifully.
Colour is my thing :) I use a number of techniques, presets, plugins like Nik Collection (link in description) depending on what I want, also check out my other videos on Making Colour Choices . More videos to come :)
Back in 2019 I had a photograph from near Kalbarri, gently slope towards the sea, a sharp drop off to sea level, then the Indian Ocean. I was new to Lr at the time, and saw "auto level." "Ha!" I thought, must give that a go. As I expected, the result wasn't better, Lr couldn't distinguish between land and sea.
Is there any chance of making a video on how you edited the image before you applied the filters.? It’s beautiful
Thank you for watching do you mean the base image I used in the video?
@@sandradimagery Yes :)
@@Lazyretina The base image was created using Leonardo AI :) glad you liked it. Mastering the prompts is the key to getting the backgrounds, elements and colours I want to create for my composites. I have online course on How to Build Your Creative Stash if you are interested www.sandradimagery.com/how-to-build-your-creative-stash-course
Thank you! Finally, a video that shows you how to apply colors from Adobe Color into Photoshop!
@@saintcosme9307 Thanks for watching yes I struggled when I first started using Color once you know what it does it’s a helpful program.
it was free, then not, then it became free again and now it's very expensive
The cost depends on the currency exchange rate in your location. The great news is that DXO now offers a pay-by-installment plan, which is fantastic! The updates are leaps and bounds ahead of what they used to be.
I haven't used NIK for a while, this was a nice reminder of what it can do! I mainly used Silver FX (I think that was what it was called), will have to give Color Efex a try!
@@robbinsdrones Nik collection 7 has some great tools to play with I only scratched the surface, thanks for watching.
Thank you for this video Sandra. It inspired me to buy the Nik7 collection and I used their instalments which I’m very happy with. Trouble is I don’t have enough hours in the day now to play with all it’s possibilities 😊

@@SheCreatesStuff2 Thank you for your kind words 😀
Hum, I can't seem to add the layer with filter, blur, average layer. No layer is created. I am just above my hue/sat layer, but a layer isn't created. If you get the time I'd love help.
Before you use this technique you have to do a Stamp Visible Layer to merge layers, see the video in Photoshop Tips on this technique.
@@sandradimagery ah, yep, that is what I forgot.
Without giving too much away what AI prompt would give me a character such as you are using here? By the way, what is the Creative Sation?
@@SheCreatesStuff2 I often say the “ creative stash” in the videos, this is where I have all of my elements organised that I use to create composites. When creating I often go there and look for inspiration. Ai prompts can vary depending on which platform one uses, this one was an early experiment a few years back tbh I can’t remember what I did. I have 2 ebooks in my shop about Building up the Creative Stash and Being Creative with AI Technology link is in the description. Thanks for watching the channel 😄

Do up and down arrows work for changing filters?
Yes, you can use the keyboard arrows to move up and down, but you won’t see the actual color until you click on it to show it in the properties box.
Would you like to see more videos on adding light?
I've been doing this for over 20 years.
Using the grey layer is great with the new selection tools over the years, they add another dimension to selecting and masking
Sandra you’re a life saver. This is just what I needed. Thanks heaps
Have fun selecting and masking 😊
I'm confused. Wouldn't you just use an adjustment layer? Or am I missing something? x
Hi you could use an adjustment layer such as curves or levels to add global adjustments or selective areas. Using a grey layer for dodging or burning has its benefits, its non destructive and can give a softer touch to this technique using a grey layer. Particularly for my style of digital art where I like softer muted colours, tones, also a grey layer is good for adding noise , which I do on some AI composites.
Command Option R gets you into a useful masking part of photoshop which is also good for hair and general mask refinement
Love those little tips thanks for watching ❤
Hi Sandra -- I never thought of using the object selection tool to find areas Photoshop missed. That's going in my bag of tricks. I'll share a trick with you and your subscribers. You can subtract from a mask just as easily as adding. This comes in handy when masking a sharp corner. I'll use an armpit as an example. On the mask, with a black hard-edged brush, click on a spot at the edge of the arm that you want to mask out. Move the brush a little closer to the body and press Shift-click. You've masked everything between the two clicks with a sharp, perfectly straight edge. Follow the line with your eyes, and Shift-Click when the brush is inside the body. Do this as many times as you want to accommodate any curves along the way. When you get to the body, click a little bit inside the body. You've cut a chunk out of it. Switch the brush to white. Click a spot on the inside of the body (the area you want to keep) and shift-click on the other side of the area you just masked out. You've just added back part of what you just subtracted, and now you've got a nice sharp corner.
Thanks for the tip shift click is a great trick to use. I used that a lot in the landscape days. Love these nifty tricks. 😊😊
Thanks for this tutorial. Great techniques

WOOOOOOW I LIKE😎
Thanks it is a great technique, thank you for watching.
Amazing thanks
You’re welcome thanks for watching 😊😊😊
You only need to use a gray layer if you use the dodge and burn tools, because they need some neutral pixels to work. With the brush tool you can paint with black, white and shades of gray on a Soft light… or any layer mode. You can even tint and color burn by using color.
Thanks for the tips I use many of those techniques as well, this was about sharing how to use a grey layer, so many ways to do things in Photoshop 😊
@@sandradimagery - you are using the wrong tools for a grey layer to be necessary. Grey layer is specifically for the Dodge & Burn tools to work non-destructively. PIXimperfect already did a debunk video years ago and most pros have dropped grey layer since the 90's.
@@TheDocPixel Go back to your room. When did you write the rules for artists. Her image is stunning.
@@nopriors it is. She’s just teaching young people 30-year old techniques to get there. I have to try and hire… and waste time retraining these people.
@@TheDocPixel I doubt any of your staff you hire has been entirely trained by her. Like any thing in PS there are a million roads to Rome. She is simply offering a technique she enjoys using and works wonderfully for her. I am looking forward to redoing some of my images and see if I like the results. There are a couple specifically that I think will benefit.
This is cool. Thank you. I'm using GIMP but have found you can do pretty much the same thing. Love your example image too. Very clever.

excellent video - i`ve been using ps since the earrly 90s and that is new one on me. very useful thank you.
Great to hear! I use the grey layer for other techniques as well
Hey Sandra, before sending the layer to Viveza or Color Efex etc if you convert it to a smart object first, then call Nik, you can make you adjustments, then after you have returned to PS, if your not 100% happy you can edit those adjustments. This way you don't need to create additional layers.
Good tip 👍🏼 not everyone knows how to work with smart objects. When teaching I try to keep it simple to,avoid confusion or extra explanations
I never thought of doing this before. Thank you.
