1926: The Bureau of Public Roads established Route 66 as part of the first federal highway system in the United States. Road signs were erected the following year.
1936: Route 66 was extended to Santa Monica.
1938: Route 66 was completely paved, making it the first paved highway in the United States.
Route 66 was a 2,448-mile highway that ran from Chicago, Illinois, to Santa Monica, California, passing through eight states. It was a major traffic artery that led many people west in search of work, especially during World War II. It was also a popular vacation route in the 1950s, passing by many natural attractions like the Grand Canyon and the Painted Desert.
