Fred Fulmer Tlingit Artist
United States
Приєднався 20 вер 2012
My name is Fred Fulmer and I was born in 1958. My Father is German and My Mother is Tlingit from a village in Alaska called Hoonah. My Tlingit name is Saał-Kaa which means “Named Great Man”. I’m from the Chookaneidee Clan, the Iceberg House or Glacier House. My mom’s people originated from Glacier Bay making me an Eagle/ Brown Bear.
My wife and I lived in Ketchikan from 1981-1987, during this time I got influenced by all the Totems and Native culture all around us. While attending Ketchikan Community College I watched Nathan Jackson carve 2 Totems for Sealaska there on campus. This is where my interest in carving began, and grew as I learned my Mom's Grandfather Frank St. Clair carved a Totem pole for the A’ak’w Kwa’an people during the CCC days called the Yak’te pole, which stands in front of the old Auke Bay village site.
I’ve enjoyed carving, sharing Tlingit culture through songs and dance and storytelling over the years and plan on continuing being a part of this rich heritage.

Rusted Adze is Now Usable
In this video: I went into the shop today and spent time finishing removing the rust using the 4" table top sander for all the tools I had out yesterday. Then I alternated using the japanese wet stone, DMT diamond block and cone sharpeners, and finishing off with using 400,600,2000 grit wet/dry paper to add the final touches to the edge. Now I only used all the above for the Lip Adze. I took the adze blade and hafted it to a elbow handle. Once that was done, it's now time to try out the adze. Feels good to have another working blade in the tool bag. Tlingit Masks here we come. Like my wife says....It's chop chop time. Coming to you from my place to yours!

Sharpening Rusty Carving Tools
Переглядів 1082 години тому
In this video: I went into the shop this morning and had a container of tools that had some rust on them. I put them in this container earlier this year and let them soak and stop rusting until I could get to them. Well now that I'm back home is a good time to start the process of derusting the tools and begin to get the edges bace to a carving sharp tool. I will take my time on these tools and...
Large Tlingit Mask Is Calling Me
Переглядів 554 години тому
In this video: I went into the shop this morning with the idea to bring the Large Tlingit Mask out and temporarily screw the Frontlet to the mask. The Frontlet is the Bear piece on the forehead. This is how it'll look when it gets attached permanently. I have some inner cedar bark that'll be pounded into cedar bark hair. I need a few more bundles, but it's going to look good! I brought this mas...

Wall Of Masks Expanding

In this video: I brought the two masks that I have been working on and display them on the wall in our living room. It's our personal Gallery. But it takes time to build up an inventory. These masks are also available for purchase as well. That's a part of the process! PM, DM, or Email me if Tlingit art interests you. Yep, that's how it's done, one chip at a time! Applying Tung Oil To Alder Mask
Переглядів 4514 годин тому
In this video: After I have this Alder mask 99.9% carved to where I want it. I decided to add Tung oil as a treatment. It helps the grains to stand out more. The spalting action in the Alder adds another look to the overall mask. Since I have these pieces I'm going to incorporate that into the design. I also use miniwax stain floated in a tung oil solution and apply it. It comes out looking lik...

In this video: After a busy weekend I made it back into the carving shed. I put some picture hanging wire on the back of the alder masks. That way I can bring them into the house and I can look at them as I decide how I plan to paint them etc. I do plan on carving different types of eyes/pupils for these masks. Detail Carving Tools Ready
Переглядів 80День тому
In this video: I have 2 alder mask that are ready to add the pupils for the eyes and also have the eyebrows drawn on as well. There are a couple of options with the eyebrows that I'm considering. 1st one is to leave the area flat around the eyebrow, adding black paint for example would define them. 2nd is too carve the wood down 1/8" around the eyebrows which would pop out the eyebrows. In this video: I brought all my current carving projects together so I can take mental inventory of what I plan on workiing on the next little while. One of the small alder masks if done. The nice thing about having a number of projects is I can bounce around from piece to piece and work on that one. A different waty of getting it done, but I like it that way. One wood chip at a time! Adzing Canoe Paddle As Well
Переглядів 119День тому
In this viudeo: After spending most of my day working on alder masks. I came across a couple of small model canoe paddles and jdecide to try shaping and adzing a texture pattern on the top face. I have thought about a paddle I seen years ago. It was aded and had a stain applied in a way that was cool looking. So I'm going to do the same here. It also had a antique look to it. Hollowing Out Tlingit Mask This Morning
Переглядів 52День тому
In this video: I get up early in the morning and think about the day and my body and soul want to go oiut to the shed and start carving. So I decided to continue hollowing out the back of this mask. I use a number of different hook knives. I switch them up and go with the one that is carving the best. But the deeper the back gets....I end up using the large hook knife that I use on Totem poles....
Carving On Work Bench A Plus
Переглядів 5714 днів тому
In this video: I have been taking some time to get the shop organized a little at a time. I got the work bench cleared off, added a support post in the center for load bearing while adzing projects. I also added a small 2x4 on top of the workbench. This ended up being useful big time. Glad I made that addition. This was a good stopping point for today. Love the process. One Chip at a Time! 4am Sharpening Carving Tools
Переглядів 31814 днів тому
In this video: I woke up early and decided it was time to head out to the carving shed. The carving knives that I have been using for hollowing out the back of the mask I decided to give it a touch up by using 300,600 and 2000 Grit wet/dry sand paper. I use a round dowel and wrap the sandpaper around to sharpen the top of the knives since they are hook knives and have a bend in the blade. Then ...

Cool
Very cool
That's the beauty of having more than one project to work on. I get to move around from project to project. This particular one is a Large project for sure. By the time it's done, it'll stand around 5.5 feet tall.
😂❤
Awesome...we will need to get you a mike it's hard to hear you with the grinder going you can use my Karaoke machine & the mike that will work great...when will you be home I hope soon dinner about ready, oh that's right you are only a few feet from our home 😂😂😂😂😂 😂😂😂😂
Thanks Honey. Yeah I wasn't sure how my talking while working on the carving tools would turn out. I tried out recording to see what the quality was. I could raise my voice, but I didn't want to come across as yelling. I see now that I can raise my voice. But the Karaoke machine is a good idea. When will I be home, dinner and just a few feet away........thats some funny stuff right there!!!!
❤
Can't wait until it's done so cool ❤
Right!!! Where's that sewing machine.............
Likootzi! Amazing Fred!
Gunalcheesh my Brother.......
😂😂I love it Fred 😂😂
Me too.....A nice way to spend the night as Trick or Treaters come to our door to get some candy. Good idea Ivy!!!
Cool ❤
Thanks Honey!!!!
Wonderful art I'm looking forward to watching all of your videos
Thank you.....That's a lot of watching of videos. I have been recording on UA-cam a number of years now, I have 353 videos that are published, meaning they are recorded in the landscape cell phone position. It took me a bit to realize that recording with the cell phone in upright/portrait position when used in the UA-cam format shows the video on only 1/3 the screen center, 1/3 to the left and 1/3 to the right are blank. I have around 29 of thiose ones . They're still viewable, but don't register as part ot the total count, but I still count them.....mark it up as part of the learning curve.
I have lots of patience .....😊... my videos are that way all of my videos are that way I didn't know there was another way I'll have to tell Joanna what you said @@fredfulmertlingitartist
I'm very interested in your work because I feel that it coincides with my study of the carved stone
And the ancient history of carving on wood stone ivory bone. ..that is my study
Landscape recording for UA-cam to show full screen is the only way. Don't know why, but thats their formatting.
They are welcome to buy them...Buy them all 😂❤❤❤
Is that the rare ,left handed adz? 👍Awsome dude..☯️
An Adze it is. L and R handed adze. An awesome tool for sure!!! The rarity to all of this , is that I am left handed. Lol
Nice wood Fred....
Yeah when access to Alder when it is in the spalting process from fungi, but not totally overtaken by it, meaning still carvable, not punky or soft where the white streaking. Then it's usable like these pieces.
❤
Cool❤
Yeah having this carving shed sure is a nice addition.
Been watching and learning, thanks for sharing with us your work
Your welcome There are many different approaches to carving masks for example. Whenever I talk about mine. I tell people that my approach is a Way. I's not the only way, just another way. The knife to wood relationship is pretty much relative. Do you try your hand at carving?
@@fredfulmertlingitartist I just started small things but not tried your style yet, its fascinates me all the different creators and styles, and you are right, its a relationship between artist and wood that is not duplicated, it will take much practise to get comfortable to find my own way, but I do enjoy art. Thank you for showing us your way
Keep up the carving, like anyrthing else it's practice, practice, practice. That old saying about 10,000 hours at anything to really know it. Well I'm not there but the concept applies. Knife to wood relationship will always be knife to wood relationship. Just depends on how you apply it. Carving is a part of my Alaskan culture, and that is what inspires me. So finding what inspires you is part of the journey down the path of making wood chips.

Cool
Awesome ❤
Thanks Honey Good to see the Big cedar mask after all these months working on the Petersberg Totem pole and going to work up in Glacier Bay for the tourist seasson. I'm Back!!!
Cool❤
❤
Is it ‘horsehair’? 🤔
Yes it is. I have put masks in galleries over the years. Some galleries won't take mask if it has human hair. But I had this horse hair and decided to use it. Definately adds another dimension to the finished piece when embellished with some add ons, Hair, cedar bark hair, abalone inlays, operculum shells etc.

Cool
You carve the face and then lighten up the back. Nice, I am learning
Yeah I always carve the face to a certain point, then start to hollow out the back. I always carve the back to a stopping point, meaning don't remove too much wood, because your committed to how deep you can carve the front if you take too much out. So I hollow out to a certain point then finish the front and come back and finish the front.
Neat idea, thanks!
Your welcome. Do you do any carving?
@@fredfulmertlingitartist i do. The woodrocksandplants and stuff has some bowls and spoons. I have another channel for the knives i make, that’s wirch’s knives. I’m envious of your masks. I find it interesting to see how you hold and carve, talk about how you get both sides the same, that’s hard and you make it look easy. I started a sun mask, but got stuck on the nose. In a few months when it’s snowing here Ill get it out.
Keep the vids going, I am learning
Show what you are carving. Learn a little, carve a little.
thank you for sharing your talents, very good work and interesting
Many thanks
Cool
