Winter 2023 Reviews - Arnaut Pavle & Minenwerfer
Quite a few to check out here. Not sure why I don't quite get Spectral Wound, may be because last year I was more into slower tempo/doomier/atmospheric sound. Let me copy & paste my Top 10 1. Tribulation - Sub Rosa In Æternum 2. The Funeral Procession - In Still Silence 3 Religious Observance - 7 Years Of Neglect 4. Vemod - The Deepening 5. Borkgnagar - Fall 6. Djevel - Natt Til Ende 7. Reverorum Ib Malacht - Martyrium Matrimonii : Sacrificium Christi 8.The Cure - Songs of a lost world 9. Drowned - Procul His 10.Stenched - Purulence Gushing from the Coffin
Thanks for sharing this, plenty for me to check out as well! This is such a frantic time of year because I realize just how much I've missed haha. I'm a big fan of Reverorum Ib Malacht but missed that one completely.
Love this album too. Thanks for review
Thanks for watching!
RITUALS OF THE DEAD HAND IS A BELGIAN BAND, I WON'T TOLERATE THIS MISTAKE. But for real, I actually have been looking forward to this. I wonder if Winterfylleth made your top 10, their album was my favorite of the year. Also, could you type what's the second Norwegian band in the top 11-20 ? My Norwegian is non-existent and I can't type their name.
Sorry! As a Dutch person, I'm sure that must be really frustrating for you. The second Norwegian band would've been Whoredom Rife - Den Vrede Makt. Thanks for the reminder to add the albums to the description.
Nice list! 20’s a good number. I think this year gave me a solid 10. Cool shout to Twin Tribes. Met that guy casually for coffee every week when I was back in TX. Looking forward to the next 10 👍
Thanks for watching! Yeah I couldn't do fewer than 20 this year, way too many notable records. That's awesome about the Twin Tribes connection, those dudes are incredibly talented.
For seem reason it seems weird to me to see an American standing in the woods - feels more appropriate to see him in a pick up truck or at MacDonalds...
I saw a lot of people raving about that one, hasn't clicked with me yet but will give it another listen soon
Doesn't have to be your thing, there are a lot of albums I feel like I *should* like and just don't haha.
Killer killer album, for sure. They need to chain that producer to them for everything they do from here on out.
Couldn't agree more. Guy worked with Empyrium and Alcest which makes sense.
I'll save my thoughts on this album for our upcoming stream. ;)
I suspected as much!
As someone who hadn’t been able to get into them before, this is also my favourite Aara record.
I too couldn't get into the prior albums, and I actually bought this one. *AND* will be on my year end list...though not top 10. Its mainly Fluss's vocals that turned me away. One trick pony. But she's pushed further into the background and better meshed with the surrounding music.
@XhungryandhauntedX Yeah I was gonna mention my buddy wasn't really into them until now... but he beat me to it. Glad you've both converted!
@@alaskan_bergwanderer Yeah the production has really hit a sweet spot with this one.
Thanks for this awesome review. I've just released a new album which I hope you enjoy
Good timing, I already had it queued up! Fantastic stuff as always. Glad you liked the review.
for me Evoken is an example of a doom band that flirts with death metal.
@@Necro4431 I’d agree with that! I gave Atra Mors a listen on the recommendation of Future Ruins and man that was a fantastic album. Almost funeral doom honestly.
Krypts are great. Their latest album Cadaver Circulation is worth checking out.
They absolutely are great! There are so many bands to keep up with and I always forget about them. Gonna throw them on now, thanks for the reminder.
@@asmaldone3 just wanted to say this is exactly what I was looking for. I don’t know if you’re familiar with Order of Decay but they released one of my favorite albums of 2023. It’s clear now that they were just trying to sound like Krypts haha.
@@AveMors I checked out that album and its good to. I'll throw a couple more recommendations you're way: reverence to paroxysm - lux morte, tzompantli - beating the drums of ancestral force, innumerable forms - philosophical collapse.
@@asmaldone3 these were all fantastic man. Really appreciate the response!
Its a great record for sure! I saw them play the whole thing twice this year and it was even better live. Sickest vocals on anything I've heard recently. Personally I go more for death/doom that is melodic. Where you might like the more twisted sick stuff. But if I were to recommend anything, I'd go with any Evoken (they're my favorite probably). Some more recent ones that are great would be Oromet, Un, Atramentus and Mother of Graves. Awesome looking hike bro!
Yeah dude the vocals really set it apart. So much variety and attention to detail. I appreciate the recs! I know it's ridiculous to say, but Evoken hasn't clicked for me yet. Going to give them another shot. Atramentus and oromet are amazing, I'll give the other two a listen.
@@AveMors Atra Mors by Evoken is probably the one that clicked the hardest for me. Some of their stuff is a bit long-winded and hard to get into but they are really solid all around. You might like Mournful Congregation as well, I like some of their stuff but I find them incredibly long winded and often don't have the patience for it. Same with Esoteric, even though I thought they were amazing live at MDF last year. \m/
@@FutureRuins Then that's the one I'll start with! I definitely remember this album art. Yeah I don't think it would be a bad thing if funeral doom, death/doom, atmospheric black metal, and other longwinded genres decided to streamline their songwriting haha.
There's a rumor mill that she may be another artist being announced for FITM, as she's apparently worked with both Wardruna and Converge.... And I LOVE Portishead. Well, at least "Dummy", which is **the** album for them anyway. You always get the best weather for your hikes, it seems like.
Damn, missed this comment somehow. Seems like you had good intelligence on FITM, haha. Yeah, Dummy is the one I've spent the most time with! It's a cool record. Dude, Northern California has some of the best weather in the world as far as I can tell.
Also; bit by a Fire Ant?? Ooooofffff Im glad we don't have those up here. And looks like a gorgeous hike!
"If you're not familiar with JSM, just unsubscribe" 😂😂😂 savage! I love seeing the current output! 🙌🙌
Thank you bro! Trying to stay consistent while I have motivation and weather on my side haha.
How in the world did the baby bear not make the cut?!
Oh CRAP
@@AveMors Fail. **shakes head in disappointement**
@@alaskan_bergwanderer I think the video was portrait instead of landscape so I overlooked it when I was exporting everything from my phone.
Great review and beautiful scenery as always. As a Chelsea Wolfe fan and a very casual Portishead fan, I'm embarrassed to say I didn't make it through the whole album. That was a while ago so I'll give it another shot. Maybe the constant rain and darkness we're experiencing here will help the mood.
Thank you man! I honestly wasn't thrilled at first, I was really hoping for more of her doomy stuff. But like I said, this record basically turned me on to a whole new genre.
Got to be my favorite Tobias record since Das Tor. I was a bit disappointed that the latest Darkspace release couldn't quite live up to the hype, had me worried Tobias had lost his touch, but Die Berge proved me wrong! Fantastic album, I'm looking forward to the review!
Thanks for watching! Yeah I think it's easily his best since Das Tor. Darkspace hasn't clicked for me which is a little odd, but maybe it's the more intentional over the top industrial vibes that don't do it for me.
As an aside, perfect spot for a review, framing and background is ace! \m/
Dude it really is amazing up there, and Rachel did a great job filming!
Its a huge investment. Been through the whole thing twice. I really like the production, sounds massive if a little more rawer than I'm Wald. I think I like Im Wald a tad bit better but really you can't go wrong with his stuff. Perfect timing to be socked into the winter and accompany the Wanderer's journey!
Yeah it really does sound huge! Less "flat" than pretty much everything else to date. I'm not sure I can pick between this and Im Wald yet, but I do appreciate that it's 45 minutes shorter lol.
Show balls?

In this video at 3:28 you mentioned you know of other artists that do Panopticon's style of folk better. Would you be able to list some for me? would love to check em out
@@todddouglas7231 Osi and the Jupiter comes immediately to mind. Blood and Sun is another fantastic one.
Christian Black Metal fan here. Really enjoyed this discussion. Since getting into the genre I've sought after a particular sound/atmosphere that Black Metal provides, lyrics usually come secondary. I love me some Panopticon, Paysage Dhiver, Altar of Plagues. If anyone knows any christian BM style bands that are similar in vibe to any of these, especially with any lyrics about end times/revelation type stuff, im all ears
Man, that's an interesting question. I know quite a few Christian black metal bands, but I'm not sure I can think of any that play the more atmospheric style you're looking for.
Cool 😎🤘🏻❄️🌲
Agree with your initial thoughts. I’m a big fan of his older stuff, but enjoy most of the new (I didn’t bother with Geister). I’ve also listened to Die Berge twice now and to me some of it kind of harkens back to the older stuff but definitely with better production. Agree with the Das Tor comparison. I think Die Berge is a pretty awesome album!!
Geister really grew on me, but I generally enjoy the older stuff more. But I'm very excited to dig into Die Berge more and more, feels like there's a lot to unpack. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
sound of Urgrund is colossal, ancient, and unforgiving. It was like a titan erupting from the mountain's core, channeling the raw, ancient force of the earth itself. riffs are like the heartbeats of the primordial void, embodying the crushing weight of timeless, mythic power. As in other compositions, it's Cold, desolate, yet cathartic-a monolithic presence that shatters the silence of the void! Hail the winter! Ave, Keep it up!
Well said! Maybe you should be the one doing reviews haha. Yes, the first two tracks are especially good, but I'm sure I'll discover more to love as I keep listening.
@@AveMors Schnee 4 is still favourite
@@DavitVadatchkoria I saw you mention that on the other video. I'll have to give it yet another listen today.
@@AveMors Great idea! Listen to Schnee 2 afterward. Tobias once mentioned in an interview that he was crying throughout the entire 10 minutes of recording vocals for Schnee 2.
Schnee 4 is best black metal song ever
Looks like hikes are back on the menu boys. Looked like a great one! Look forward to check out the band. Bet your stoked on the season getting out there! I think when it comes to production, lately I dig that new Mork. Sounds great but also retains a bit of grit and grim. Look forward to more!!
Absolutely stoked! Have some fun trips lined up for the rest of the year and there are a couple peaks I have my eye on. Dude that Mork record is great! I gotta give it some more time.
Excellent album and an excellent review man. Great stuff on your channel.
Cheers, thanks so much for the comment!
Allegedly, one of the members of this band was in Sorhin, which explains the quality. Really good stuff and I agree with the production talk, especially the part of the deluge of "raw" black metal bands out of the woodwork.
Ohh yeah, that was mentioned in Bardo Methodology, right? Skogsgriftens Rike is their only release I've checked out but it's great.
I need to pull this one back out and give it a spin again, I got it back when it came out. I do like this project quite a bit!
I didn't realize I LOVE this project until this release.
HE IS BACK! 🙌🙌
Hopefully I can start uploading more than twice a year haha.
🤘🤘🤘
Sounds like it was pretty windy out
It wasn't.
Agreed, it looked and sounded really windy out there 😂
You're actually right. Wintherr stated in an interview that Im Wald and Geister were written more or less at the same period of time. And overall a great review and landscape. PDH is one of the greatest.
Glad I picked up on that! I gotta say, Geister has really grown on me, and I liked it a lot to begin with. I heard him say in an interview that it's the only album he would even consider playing live. Paysage d'Hiver is my all time favorite. So excited for the new record.
@@AveMors yeah I watched that same interview and can definitely see why it's the only one fitting for a live setting. couldn't really imagine stuff from the self titled or Kristall & Isa for example to be played live. and yes the two singles have been great, stoked to hear the whole record.
@@October6669 I was in shock when I saw he did a video interview. I guess we all mellow out as we age haha.
@@AveMors me too man, I never thought he'd do a video interview. but damn was it a delight to watch.
that's a perfect place to listen to black metal!
Couldn't agree more!
Hails!!!
I'm not into Cookie Monster vocals. However, Aquilus scratches a specific itch that no other band satisfies.
I cannot explain which feelings arise, however, whenever I hear this it's different.
Wtf Agalloch is back?! Fuck yeah bois! 🤘
Really Peak Paysage d´Hiver. All his experience with the previous records, was completed here in perfection. The high point in this case also means, that it never got as good again after that. You could really tell from the last two albums. Maybe he should have ended the project with "Das Tor".
@@currentofthesnake8486 I’d be so sad if he stopped recording there haha. I think it’s his best album but he’s released some amazing stuff since then! Including the single that just came out.
@@AveMors I dont know. I was little dissapointed with "Im Wald". It hadn´t the same spark or magic like his other work.
The album supplication is amazing
How did I miss this? Hopefully they come back to LA soon!
they are, hopefully you will see them
@ Yup, I saw that! I think I’m going to see them when they come in May!
They're just geniuses in their sound crafting. Indeed unique! Thanks for filming this, one of my favorite songs of the life, they sound better now than ever, such a blessing they've came back.
Couldn't agree more! Very thankful to have seen them. Wouldn't be surprised if they play many more shows.
Nice review! Subscribed
I appreciate it!
that's some pretty awful clean vocals
Welcome back sir! It is quite the album, for sure..great stuff.
Thank you king, been listening to this one quite a bit
Great review and scenery as always.
Thank you king
Glad to see you back my friend, your videos are so good and very original, love seeing the beautiful nature you hike in, and good review of this epic album
I really appreciate it, good to be back!
