are u dosing a fertilizer that contains nitrate?
@@Alex-so5si yes I think that might be out
Beautiful tank
@@plumber1331 thanks
in a perfect world exports should = imports even with proper nitrates your tds is probably going up or down(and what that tds number signifies) hella plants and topping off with RO water only can extend your water change schedule but its extremely hard(not immpossible) to eliminate them completely
Is the back panel of glass clear on this tank
no its black
@RodsAquatics thanks!
Without water changes you need to worry about your water getting too soft as the plants absorb all the minerals in the water eventually. Rainbowfish especially prefer slightly harder water. Nitrates are not that big of a deal.
Wow! Your plants look amazing. I haven just recently got into planted tanks hard core, I’ve been fish keeping for a long time but I have a question. I got some Anubis’s for my 37 gallon cichlid tank. There are no other plants in the tank. I don’t have to root tab them like I do my planted 20 right?
@fishkeepingwithmatt2101 anubus needs to be glued or tied to rocks or wood, so no you don't need root tabs! Good luckk
How many times do you feed the fish per day?
@@procraw it wasn't over feeding. Oncer per day. It was my fertalizer!
Looks like a female 🔥🔥
You are likely over feeding
Has this doser ever let you down? I’m considering getting one. I’ve heard about other doser pumps getting stuck in the “on” position 😮
Not once, I highly reccomend this doser!
@@mowaka2516 you might have to tug on the tub if it isn't working at first to get the siphon going. Like milking a cow lol. Never had to touch it since. Been a year

@RodsAquatics thanks rep
How you achieved huge growth on echinodorus what fertilizer
@justin94431 I use thrive+. Thank you for watching! I also injected c02 until I was happy with their size. But they still keep growing just at a slower rate.
@RodsAquatics thank you for replying I'll also use that fertilizer seems it's better than apt
What does red means on your nitrate test?
@@greenmachinesweden on the API test kit when the nitrates are very high they show red.
@RodsAquatics I do understand that red means high. I was just curious about how high?
@@greenmachinesweden bright red between 40 and 80
@RodsAquatics ok. There are no conection between 40-80 ppm nitrate and fish health or death. The lovest level a peer revied article has established connection to fish health is 800 ppm. The connection was to growth speed in salmon farming. The huge tanks in public aquariums where water changes is troublsome always have over 100 ppm. I have seen healthy shark tanks at 1200 ppm. So you need to look for other reasons for popeye and fish death.
@greenmachinesweden everyone is good now! Thanks for the comment!
yes you still need do water changes.
Have two 10 gal tanks with only 12 small amber tetras & another with 3 ambers & 12 ultra small chilli Rasboras, Both have 100+ neocaradina shrimp, a few amano's, oto's n snails plus lots of plants n fast growing hornworth in them. One's been up 12 months & other 6 months, check water quality weekly & never have do anything but top off evaporation. Might be the fast growing hornwoth that's absorbing the nitrates. You need Fast Growing plants to do that. Slow growing plants not so much.
@jefferybruce2332 your very right! This tank is also covered so if I just did top offs it's not much new water. I have a 10 gal similar setup as you and I've never changed the water because the top off are more frequent
Submerge your wood for a while in a tub. All wood will sink.
@@eb7164 you better have a spare bathtub! The big wood piece i have took at least 5 months to sink!
You need more plants for that many large fish and probably feeding too much. I do a 30-50% water change once per year and nitrates are never above 25ppm.
@@DashDrones I've never had an issue until I added the Cory's! I think it's a combination of both of what you said
lol ...slow growing plants don't suck up nitrates nearly as fast as fast growing stem plants
@@nicholasabbott9128 so true I should have mentioned this more clearly!
That's a beautiful tank, plants look amazing as do the fish.l only have small tanks with different nano species and all are heavily planted but I still do a weekly water change but on,y around 10 /15 per cent.Seems to work for me ,lose the odd fish occassi9nally still but no major losses.Good luck with your tanks they all look great.
The sound is really good! Nice mic
If you had a deep substrate along with a heavily planted tank, then you wouldn't need to do water changes.
@Haseeb2-q8d i agree with the substrate but I would say this thing is healivy planted. Just not stem plants which does work better
@@RodsAquatics The stem plants will facilitate the complete nitrate - nitrite cycle in a deep substrate aquarium. My set up is mostly water wisteria and I have gone 8 months so far without a water change.
I have one piece of wood, the largest, that wants to float. All the wood pieces were boiled, but this one won't stay down. It is presently wedged between two flowerpots and stays there. I never thought of using a screw as a fishing line anchor. I do have some stainless-steel screws on hand, but I'm wondering if bronze ones might work better. Or even drilling a hole and gluing in a short dowel stick. Both of the latter would blend in better, but I cannot argue with success. Take care.
Thanks for this valuable video.
Just got ur videos today watched 2-3 , it is awesome buddy, subscribed and will stay connected 😍
Yes
So i have a planted tank and i have never done a water change. Only top ups. It has now been 486 days! I lost some fish at first but now, i haven't lost one in over 6 months and their population has doubled, as well as the vegetation.
@BenTodd maybe I was over feeding! Since addingnthe corydoras I have to feed more so the food reaches the bottom. The rainbowfish are so fast.
if you overfeed then you need to do water change. fish can survive without food for a week.
@sharolcuevas7780 this is true I've done it many times. I just trying to figure out how to feed the Cory's without the rainbowfish stealing it
@@RodsAquatics If they like to eat boiled cucumber ? or i used to feed shrimp food which is of tablet form circular shape. It dips into water and reaches bottom, throw few under driftwood or rocks
@kishannandivada9278 the rainbowfish always find it I'm tell you they're savages
Slow growing plants, rosette plants and their type do not take up a lot of nitrate. Certain mosses are alright if CO2 is used, but not great. Bunches are a pain to maintain. Better to just water change.
@AndrewFishman you're so right! Everything was find until I added the Cory's biology wise I believe
Love the tank, I'm jealous of your torpedo barbs keep it up

Quick questions! How are they doing now that time has passed by? And were you able to keep them in a “hard water” tank or is your tank/ area based off of soft water? Ive been looking into purchasing apistogrammas however i have noticed that many of the ones out there with very outstanding colors are mostly kept successfully in soft water tanks. Unfortunately in my area all i have is hard water; however i keep running into information from others online saying that they were successful in keeping and breeding Apisto macmasteri in hard water conditions. Please let me know thank you!
They are doing great! I find that you should always try you never know if its going to work. I have them with micro fish and I read that would be an issue and I have had zero agression issues. Your local fish store probably has the same water hardness as you. So see if they have been able to keep them. But I would say just go for it man. They are amazing fish.
Hey how long have you had these rainbows? I’ve seen your 6 month update vs your first set up video and they still look the same lol. Size and color.
@brianpan57 I've had them for 10 months, and they have all grown except the Iranian reds. They seem to grow slower. I only feed them once per day and nothing on sunday and I do not overfeed. Which is why I think they are growing slower. I has SA Cichlids and fed them 2x a day and they grew faster. But the tank looks great and everyone seems happy. Overfeeding causes it own issues. I'm not in a rush for them to grow up haha. But they have definitely all grown about an. Inch in the past 10 months.
@ that’s awesome. I just bought like 20 random rainbows for my 75G planted. It looks pretty empty now. Have you had success adding a school of nano fish? I don’t think it’ll make a huge difference in bioload.
Also how often do you change water? I’ve been testing my water and it’s been fine. Water stays good for like 3 weeks now
@@brianpan57 Yes I have! In that tank I have harlequin Rasboras, rummynose tetras, and brilliant rasboras. I would say I like the way the Rummynose act with them the best for sure. Also get a nice school of corydoras for the bottom of the tank! I like the orange venezualian ones!
Hey Rod, just wondering if you are still going to do anything with the UNS 60A salt water tank?
@invsin6272 hey! Yeah I have a few videos on that tank. I'll try and post another one soon So far it's got hammers, torches, anenomes and zoas in it. As well as some fish. I am liking the salt water but I definitely like fresh more!
@invsin6272 i posted an update video!
Did you use co2 in this tank ?
Yes I did, but not anymore, but I still do dose fertalizer!
My rainbowfish are vegan. They won't leave the vallis alone
aw man that sucks! I have a wide variety of breeds and none of them mess with the plants.
They look like 2 males to me, that's why the larger one chased off the smaller one and they don't swim around together. Keep an eye on them as the smaller one may get bullied until it gets sick. You may need to move it to the endlers tank.
@@md8421 so I agree with you and the next day I went to the store to swap out for a female and when I came downstairs one of the males jumped. But the other one is still here doing great!
@RodsAquatics sorry to hear that. But glad the other one is doing well and hopefully will spawn for you with the female!
I have a spare 180 that’s empty expect for Amazon swords and jungle Val. Do you think any big South American cichlids would leave the plants alonr
@Cichlidaquariums1 Try it out if you put them in their young you should be good I think. I've seen people keep severums in those style tanks!
You should use sand instead of gravel, gravel is a nitrate factory
Love the gorgeous tank. As soon as I get my new tank up & running, I've gotta transfer my Venezuelan cories to it in order to put them on a diet. They became chonkers in the guppy tank.

@yashtapase3821 fertalizer daily dosing and I used a soil substrate capped with sand! The lights are from ebay $100 each and I have 2 of them. Nothing fancy. I used to inject c02 but I haven't in like 6 months because I don't need them any bigger but they keep growing hahaha, just slower now without the c02

So hows the tank working out 1 year after you made this video?
Check out my rainbowfish video on my channel, I got tired of the cichlids, no regrets
This is one of my favorite tank concepts. I call it the "Guppy Explosion," but haven't conducted the experiment with Endlers as yet. (Typically, however, some Endler genetics will emerge if you just include Guppies in the original set of parents.) I recently set up a 20 gallon version of almost this exact same tank (minus the bristlenose but with african-dwarf frogs) and am waiting for the population to finally explode. I started with a wide variety of about 8 guppies and have about 40 now, with the "explosion" likely to happen within the next month or two. And, BTW, you don't need to worry about what to do when you have too many. The population will take care of itself by cutting down on breeding and increasing consumption of the fry. You can also take some into your LFS and at least get some store credit -- typically $.50 to $1.00 each, in batches of fifty.
@damianbiondo812 I love this tank so much. I recently threw 1 male guppies in there to get even more diversity! It's so cool to observe
