I'm not sure if you're still having problems with this, but there is a locating tab on the bottom of the recoil that needs to go in the hole that's at 10 o'clock in relation to the recoil bolt hole. You can see the hole at 5:09 of this video... Hopefully this will help someone in your situation here.

Bad idea that luckily didn't end in disaster. There are marks here for ingenuity, but there where many opportunites for disaster, including death. Local boat yards charge $$ to do this job, and for that price, no one gets hurt, and nothing gets broken. Many sailors step their own masts, but they know the process and are not figuring it out on the fly.

I do it on land, on the trailer.

I would have my well scouted blind setup a week or more before opening day and be on it before suns up. And I would have my deer at sunrise. I got a deer or more every year. I always hunted or fished for results and was raised by folks who had to keep large families full. You cant hear me in the woods.

Bravo! A masterful tribute, Nick, to him that some also call "our island saint." Very informative, inspiring, and well done! I hope that you'll be in attendance at this summer's Music on the Porch event. I'm very much looking forward to it. A group of us are planning to sing a cappella as the the closing number a song that I wrote for my two-act musical play, "Beaver Isle." The musical portrays in song scenes from the lives of Protar, Pat Bonner, and Beaver Island life. The closing song is called "Our Island Saint." We'll invite the audience to join in singing with us.

The open windows on the starboard side I'm beginning to think you're not a sailor, btw personal flotation devices are not uses when solo sailing in the middle of the Indian ocean...why would you, harnesses are a must though

After that trip across the lake for the first time with your new boat solo sailing. I'll bet your neck was stiff as a board for a week. That's a really nice boat you got their sailor. You got your money's worth out of it the first trip😂

We have property on Allens Lakeview and our beach property has grown in the last 2 years. Love Beaver Island!

I make this drive way to often. Chicago traffic is horrible. That is why I bought land and escape to beaver twice a year.

Another great video! I’ve got a funny story of breaking my rib while trying to unstick my own boat once! 😂 I’m all for getting your forever boat. We upgraded from a 27’ to a 36’ and never looked back. More room for visiting kids and we feel more comfortable on the water.

I looked at swing keels (trailer sailers) for a long time before I settled on my keel boat, a grampian 26. The reasoning was, I'd want to go sailing, then put it off, since all the work every time to trailer to a ramp, rig the mast every time, launch, and reverse repeat, and I knew that the boat would just sit in my driveway. I found a relatively inexpensive marina on lake ontario, we live 45 min away, but I know that I can hop in the car anytime, and once at the marina, I'm rounding the lighthouse in 10 min and sails are up and we're good to go. I have been averaging 29-39 sails a season, and part of a great little fun race league. It costs a bit of money, but my main hobby, so worth it. The race club (NewCastle Yacht Club) has social events often also,, so we sleep over often and make a bit of a party out of it also. Some nights we just get out for a sail, then go back, cook some BBQ off the stern rail, and settle in for a movie night on the boat off the laptop,, things like Master and Commander are awesome, by candle light. Hope this helps. I certainly appreciate the value of a trailer sailer, but know that I wouldn't get out as often, even with the 45 min drive. Life is short, and if you can afford, a cheap marina is the way to go. Also helpful to have other more experienced sailers around to ask about issues, trimming, etc. My 2 cents. Hey there! Another awesome sailing adventure on Lake Michigan, even if there were some challenges along the way. Don't worry about the occasional "fail". It happens to the best of us, and it's all part of the journey. Remember, it's not just about the destination, but the memories you create along the way. Keep enjoying that time on the water with your family, and before you know it, those teens will be all grown up. By the way, loved the footage! Keep up the amazing work! ⛵️🌊💙
