In 2014, a small group of students from Deer Park High School started Das ist Keine Kunst Folk Dance Troupe to continue their shared interest in spreading German culture. Over the last 9 years, Keine Kunst has made a name as one of the youngest professional dance groups in Texas. Not only will you find Keine Kunst on the dance floor, they have expanded their presence into teaching, judging competitions, and audience participation performances. Their hope is that their performances can encourage everyone to enjoy German traditions. 'We make dancing look like a piece of Cake!'
Austrian Steirischer - Dance with Keine Kunst
Austrian Steirischer, also known as the Schuhplattler Landler, is a very popular dance from Tyrol, Austria. This dance is very unique because it features three different plattlers. This dance is also one of the few dances with a schuhplattler where the woman gets to do more than just spinning, and even gets to interact with the men during the plattlers. The dance features a landler step and step hops throughout, as well as many complex figures. This dance is meant to be a very flirtatious dance, including a section where the men hit the females' skirts up, which can be substituted for clapping on beats 2 and 3 for those wishing to omit this part. The woman would then go flirt with the next man in front of her, as her partner flirts with the woman behind them. The men's flirting is supposed to mimic the mating dance of the black grouse, a large game bird. This dance was performed often at weddings and festivals, and sometimes the performance fighting turned into real fights!

Hey there, I stumbled across this Video and must say I am amazed!! I‘m from South Bavaria and a tournament-plattler myself. I had high high expectations going into this video. And let me tell you, you did not dissapoint! The Tracht is slightly off, and the overall form of the Plattler could be better, but besides that it was by far the best performance that I‘ve seen from foreigners so far! The Maxglaner-Marsch (Maxglan is just across the border where I live) is a rather difficult one and you did well. Congratulations! Well done Buam!

It's silly for me to imply that my German ancestry had something to do with it, when culturally, I had received a watered-down version of the culture living as an American born of German Farmer Immigrants. It was a tasteless, and stupid joke. However, I'd like to think that somehow there is a connection.
