Honeycomb Cardboard In Fine Furniture
Overview of the veneering process used in creating flat, stable, lightweight, and structural wood glue up panels. These panels have many advantages in preventing wood movement or warping. The resin impregnated core creates a torsion box inside the panel with crossbanding and shop sawn veneers. Very stable balanced panels can be used in many fine furniture applications and I show a practical example using them in a butterfly leaf table extension.

Переглядів 8 тис.Рік тому
I wanted to show if an entry level or intermediate chisel set could be sharpened and tuned up to be as good or close to the level of a premium chisel like Lie Nielsen or Veritas. What are the differences, how do they compare, cut quality and how to sharpen. A common question is what is sharp and I briefly explain my sharpening process and results using these chisels.

    My only question is that where would you be allowed this amount of time and trouble to getting your chisels and plane irons to such a level of sharpness, the foreman would have your guts for garters!

    I guess you could consider this diy since he "did" it himself.. but I don't see how anybody actually taking the time to watch this video could learn much from his methods. His lighting method could be of some value but he skips over it pretty quick.

    I feel like unless the chisel is the cheapest of the cheap (sub 55 Rcs), they shouldn't really be that much different during the first few cuts. Owning and restoring no less than 200 vintage chisels amongst my modern chisels, I can anecdotally claim that the difference is often in the feel and edge retention (depending on what you are cutting) vs sharpness. On softwood especially, where the keenness matters far more than edge durability, I feel like that based on that sound, your chisel hasn't found the sharpness for some reason. The end grain chips should break with no skips on a sharp chisel. On a properly sharpened chisel, even just on a hard Arkansas, it should feel and sound like cutting through thick plastic rather than wood. Your chips shouldn't have such large break profile and will appear waxy. Just some thoughts.

    Top oil vs Polyx. I am doing a table top. Which would you choose?

    • @DavidBailey-mr7kq
      @DavidBailey-mr7kq 2 місяці тому

      I have used both many times (professional furniture maker) and I think top oil is slightly more durable. I don't think it's a huge difference however, and the Polyx comes in way more colour and finish variations like matte so I'll often use it because of that.

    Rubio states you can dilute with up to 30% water. They claim it provides a more even stain as it slows down the initial drying time. Have you ever applied Rubio this way? Thanks for sharing.

      You can only add water to the Precolor Easy as it's a water-based dye. Never add water to Oil Plus 2C. You probably know this already, but just wanted to clarify. I've added water to the dye and have had great results. Especially helpful on large projects when you're working alone.
