Tintern Abbey - On The Wye
This magical part of Wales has been visited by tourists for hundreds of years and for good reason. The romantic ruins of Tintern Abbey, set upon the windy River Wye and nestled below tree covered hills is the perfect setting for anyone wanting to escape into fantasy. The area offers scenic walks into the hills and remnants of its past. It is a must-see for any visitors to this part of the country.

----- Short History -----
- The Cistercian Order was founded in 1098 at the abbey of Cîteaux, France.
- They formed one of the strictest monastic orders and became very successful in Europe.
- They devoted themselves to prayer and a simple life.
- Founded in 1131 by Walter de Clare, Lord of Chepstow.
- The first church was much smaller than what we see today. And very little of the original remains.
- During the 13th century the Abbey was mostly rebuilt.
- In 1288, the first mass in the rebuilt presbytery was recorded.
- Roger Bigod, 5th Earl of Norfolk, the then Lord of Chepstow, contributed to the rebuilding and had his coat of arms included in the Abbey’s glasswork.
- King Edward II stayed at Tintern for two nights in 1326.
- During the Black Death in 1349, it became impossible to attract new monk recruits for their own labour, known as the lay brotherhood.
- In the 15th century the abbey was short of money, in part due to the Welsh uprisings under Owain Glyndŵr.
- King Henry VIII ordered the Dissolution of the Monasteries in the 16th century.
- In 1536, the Abbot surrendered Tintern to the King.
- The building was granted to the Lord of Chepstow and soon after the lead from the roof was sold and the decay of the buildings began.
- After the Abbey’s dissolution the adjacent area became industrialised. With the establishment of the first wireworks, factories, charcoal production and a lime kiln all nearby. This created a lot of pollution which further damaged the building.
- The ruins of the abbey were inhabited by the local workers.
- During the 18th and 19th century tourism in the area was on the rise. With the Wye Tour being the most popular. With the abbey as one of its most spectacular features.
- In 1901, the abbey was bought by the Crown.
- It was now declared a monument of national importance and archeological work finally began and informed maintenance on the buildings.
- In 1914, it passed to the Office of Works who carried out major structural repairs and reconstructions.
- In 1984, responsibility passed to Cadw.
- Over the years it has featured in a number of paintings reflecting its romantic setting.
- Visited by 70,000 people every year.

@@WildBikeCamper It's a beautiful place for a visit but I don't recommend it in peak summertime tbh. The castle itself is located on a hillside so there are very few flat spots. The few flat spots that are there are just too visible in the farmers field (with sheep all around). The spots that were out of sight were absolutely plastered in forests of nettles and rubble everywhere... It's really not an easily campable spot in any form tbh but you may get better luck in the Autumn once all the nettles have died back.

@@boyzinthewood1 Appreciate the detailed reccy feedback! I'd have dragged my bike over there along the river and pitched by the bank - am thinking the line of trees might be enough of a barrier to keep the sheep at bay? I can 🔪the nettles- As long as it's quiet!

@WildBikeCamper the path was definitely fine for a camp, but it's still in a very open farmers field. Personally, I wouldn't risk it as you've got a very good chance of being spotted if he jumps in his tractor early in the morning. I had a two man tent on me at the time, if you have a single tent or a bivy you'll definitely have more luck there than I did.

Many historians doubt that the Silures were defeated. Caerwent was built by the Romans FOR the Silures to run as a civitas, and they kept their royal line intact. They had fought the Romans to a standstill for thirty years, easily the most dangerous tribe faced by the Romans in Britain, as Tacitus admitted. Some believe the two sides came to a peace treaty, signed at Cardiff, in Welsh Caerdydd, the City of the Treaty or Agreement.

There was no such thing as Wales or Welsh then. If he even existed. He was king of the Britons not the Welsh, and other locations like Cornwall, Glastonbury and Scotland also have their own claims to that. You're simply going off that book written by those two guys years ago where someone found a silver cross. That is literally the only supposed evidence. And it's a subject I've been researching for over 40 years so I know nobody can make such a claim. If so then provide your evidence
