I don't think it was staged or scripted but it was a "let's go light" (enough that it is competitive but no one will get hurt) sparring match. I'm no professional fighter but I've done kickboxing/muay Thai to know when fighters are sparring to when they are going full out, full contact. The excellent undercard Barrios vs Ramos is an example of the real deal with both combatants swinging for the fences. We can blame Tyson's age but despite all the social media training footage hype he was not in a condition that a 58 year old (even a 38 year old) would need to be to even head back in the ring even for an exhibition match. He looked terribly overweight and sluggish from the start and flat footed for a fighter who was renown for his peekaboo bob and weave entries. This tells me that there was no real motive for Tyson to be in the best shape he could be because he knew it was a sparring match and not a lot of risk. Compare this to Muhammad Ali who apparently resorted to taking thyroid meds to get his weight down in his last fight at the age of 39 against Trevor Berbick. Tyson's motive was the $20 million and who can blame him? Also, very few fighters - other than maybe Naseem "The Prince" Hamed - would be that chill (like Jake Paul) going to the ring if he knew he was facing a real fight because the adrenaline is pumping. Paul was joking around and acting cocky and putting on a show because there was NO presence of threat as he knew it was just an exhibition match no matter how much Netflix and the promotion tried to convince us otherwise. Even Tyson (weed, shrooms, or otherwise) looked way too relaxed heading into the ring if it were for real. Go look at Tyson in his prime. He was always nervous heading into the ring and he has confessed this. Yet, he was suspiciously calm heading to the ring solo. The problem is that there really are not as many real boxing fans anymore. It is your Gen Z "grew up watching Jake Paul on UA-cam" fans who can't tell a real boxing fight, to an exhibition match. That is exactly who Jake Paul targets as his audience and gets rich off of it. Also notice that Jake Paul was guaranteed more money than Tyson because it's all part of the Jake Paul marketing machine. Despite all that I don't think this will tarnish Tyson's legacy as many say it will. It's just an asterisk * footnote. It was your typical Jake Paul vs "?" freak show. It's Jake Paul who should be embarrassed that he continues to shamelessly claim he's a real pro boxer and (as one reviewer accurately assessed) interlopes but dodges real contenders his own weight class and age range. Paul won't even step in the ring with an Olympic amateur boxer. Kinda tells you something.
