as a kid this was my 1st ever star trek episode, but not my hook.

This was so much fun. I think it’s because David Gerrold just knows how to write dialogue that it’s impossible to perform one of his scripts badly. I looked ahead and am glad to see he wrote another script for the Animated Series.

This one left me kind of meh. I just think it feels a little stretched too thin to really work. Nichelle Nichols does give her best performance and actually gets to do things. Honestly I don’t vibe with Margaret Armen penned episodes

I’m not sure how long it’s been since you watched the Ultimate Computer, but the governor of Mantilles was supposed to be the Commodore Wesley that was fighting the M5 in the war games of that episode, and he decided not to destroy the Enterprise.

I really liked this one. Was kind of surprised Marc Daniels could write an episode that worked so well and I honestly think this one could have worked easily in live action, though because it’s animated we get that beautiful design for the cloud. If anything because it’s a bit standard brings it down slightly for me but it’s really good.

Star trek movies are NOT a product of star wars... The Motion Picture was concieved years before Star Wars... and was given a green light prior to the release of Star Wars.. when everyone thought it was going to be a huge flop. In fact the huge success of Star Wars forced the production company to rush the filming of The Motion Picture, almost destroying it. BTW, Lucas copied so much from Star Trek... from photon torpedos to light/warp speed. When watching the motion picture, make sure to watch the 2022 4k hd Directors cut (not the earlier directors cut).. it corrects most of the rushed issues from the original release... and watch it in the dark.. its the most cinematic of all the movies.

This one’s so surprisingly mature for the Animated Series, like we’re doing a pro euthanasia story for kids and I love it for that. Also Leonard Nimoy is clearly the one actor of the main three who understand how to voice act.

There is a production order which differs from airdate order. According to the book, The Star Trek Compendium, “More Tribbles, More Troubles” was the first one produced. “Yesteryear” seems familiar as the second one. According to Memory Alpha, there were three scripts recorded in the first session in June. Perhaps it’s questionable whether there really could be an order.

I have been watching the original series since the 1960's and I'm glad there are new generations of fans. That said, your list is way off.

Wait, wait, wait...Galileo 7 is number 1? You guys are obviously being provocative on purpose (I notice you didn't try to defend your choice at all). In the episode the breakdown in military discipline spoke poorly of Starfleet training and the Enterprise in particular. McCoy's and Lt. Boma's subversion of Spock's authority was incredibly unprofessional (if not actionable via NJP), The writing is just not good. It was written by Oliver Crawford who was a standard TV writer (Gilligan's Island, Kojak etc) and so that's the level of writing here (no Gene, or Gene or D.C.) The only thing worth watching in this episode is Phyllis Douglas (she was gorgeous) but she looks even better as a space hippie in season 3.

I enjoyed this one but I think a lot of its problems aren’t the limitations of the animation but that Samuel A Peeples had only written one episode and while it was very good he’s writing a very dialogue heavy script that drags the 24 minutes down for me. And I don’t think the cast has quite gotten a handle on voice acting yet.

The best ‘season’ no question is the second half of season one and the first half of season two! My top ten: 1) Amok Time 2) Mirror, Mirror 3) Journey to Babel 4) This Side of Paradise 5) City on the Edge of Forever 6) The Squire of Gothos 7) Errand of Mercy 8) The Trouble With Tribbles 9) Wolf in the Fold 10) Return to Tomorrow 11) Charlie X 12) A Taste of Armageddon 13) Conscience of the King (Uhura) 14) Bread & Circuses (Uhura) After this it gets much harder. Thoughts: A) Evil Sulu might have been straight, but I look at it more as consolidating power. What could be better than an alliance between the head of security and the head of communications. A very powerful alliance indeed. B) Before starting the animated series, you should react to the blooper reel (used to be only available at conventions but now on UA-cam!). There’s a great one from Return to Tomorrow by Kirk.

Mirror, Mirror, and The City on the Edge of Forever are the only two that are on most lists, admittedly Space Seed sometimes gets a high rating? A unique list. Nice call on the Galileo 7! I think there is a copy of the Galileo 7 sitting in a space museum. Interesting commentary/explanations. For me, my favorite episode is ‘A Piece of the Action’. I might want to compile a list of the top 10 or top 20 episodes of all of Star Trek, TOS - Enterprise.

On its own honestly I think The Cage is fine but it’s clear why this wasn’t picked up until they did Where No Man Has Gone Before. It’s still got the ableism, though less so without the ending. Oddly enough Joey your joke about NBC seeing it and saying remake it is quite funny because that’s kind of what happened though it was Lucille Ball telling Roddenberry to redo it and Jeffrey Hunter had offers for films so he left. And they wanted more action which honestly they were right to ask for, it’s very contemplative.

I guess Shatner is having fun but yeah this is a whimper and not a bang to go out on. This isn’t great outside of a few scenes and I think that’s all because of the sexism that pervades the thing. It feels like any attempt towards commentary on gender was attempted to be surgically removed.

When you get to the movies, be aware that after the fourth movie, they premiered The Next Generation. After two seasons of the Next Generation, they released the fifth movie which was set after the fourth. During the fifth season of Next Generation, they released the sixth film, set after movie number five. If you watch the Next Generation for a while before seeing the sixth film, you will benefit from seeing them finally cover a period of time not discussed during the Next Generation and you will see a nice cameo.

and if you wan more Trek you could even get in to Futurama, Galaxy Gest, Free Enterprise, Fanboys, Trekies, Heroes, What we left behind, Robot Chicken, SNL, All That, Carol Burnett Show, the Las Vegas Film, Reading Rainbow, MLP FiM, Gargoyles, Deadly Games, any thing hosted by the cast, other movies and TV shows done by he cast, Quantum Leap, etc

When Star trek came out they wanted to do the female 1st officer and the female captain but the networks didn't allow it.

I think its funnily ironic that the EMBODIMENT OF DREAMS knows less about Mary Poppins than Death herself.

This one kind of felt like a finale and I kind of wish it was. It would be such a contemplative note to go out on and I can’t imagine the next episode being good since it’s Roddenberry.

"Black Face" if you can even call it that, is still done even in TNG and DS9 maybe even beyond that. It raises a moral question. what is more offensive? Playing an other race ? or playing a roll because you were the right color? These days any one can be and has been an other race. In animation easily, under enough make up in live action people of every color have been every other color. You also have to consider the era this was in. Socially and Legally black face was more acceptable then blacks and whites interacting together. Bottum line Klingons are Brown and white people play Klingons frequently this is far from the last time you'll see it.

Everyone Admires Abe Lincon he was in The Twilight Zone Wald Disney's Hall of Presidents Doctor Who The Time Tunnel This Is America, Charlie Brown Animaniacs Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure Batman Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter Adventure Time I feel like other things too when its not him its George Washington and Ben Franklin on Bwitched or Teddy Roosevelt and Tarzan Presidents have been all over TV and always to give that emotional impact. if not them its some other big shot like Mark Twane or Thomas Edison Gene Roddenberry's messages while often heavy handed but its what built Star Trek and made people think and made them remember. This could fall in to the debate over "When did Star Trek get Woke?" my use of the word is "When a moral message is so obvious, so in your face, so loud that you get what they are trying to say and don't want to hear it yet again" by the time you get threw every thing Star Trek, all of Gene Roddenberry, all of Ted Turner, The Bush Admiration, the Trump Era, both Rosevelt eras, MLP:FiM, Cartoon All-Stars, half of the 2010s reboots, M*A*S*H, All in the Family, you'll be able o gage what is woke and what is a well handled moral message. We can revisit this episode after you have seen Captain Planet , Discovery, half of Netflix. Do a ranking list. Point is Abe Lincoln is to "Feel Good" what Hittler is to "Feel Bad" because Hittler too has a HUGE TV cameo list for the exact same reason as Lincon. One freed Slaves and Ended War the other created slaves and started a war. The two are iconic in the face and instantly tiger vibes when the enter a room. Weird would be Kirk summoning James K Polk

This was bad. Like really bad. Once again this is one where I just have to ask why? Philosophically this episode decides good and evil are basically the same and that just doesn’t make any sense. Roddenberry using a slur (and a a sexualized one) to describe Uhura and then having her be totally fine with it is just so indicative of the whiteness of the production team. Heck even the production itself is just really poorly shot and the episode just kind of ends. Awful.

Best older sister

This one was actually pretty good, a fascinating use of political commentary and an impressive setting especially for season three. The ending is a bit too both sides are bad in places but I enjoyed this one. I think Margaret Armen writing the script brings it down quite a bit.

That was awful. An attempt to engage with the counterculture and it just seems to have contempt for it. Probably one of the worst things the show has done and if it were in the first season I would probably have stopped watching.

The original idea was to have McCoy’s daughter be in the group rather than Chekov’s former friend.

I actually enjoyed this one. It wasn’t amazing but it was a fairly solid riff on The Tempest and subsequently Forbidden Planet. There are some big problems, especially the whole Enterprise is a plague ship because that gets dropped basically at the halfway point. Kirk was a bit out of character because he’s not been that violent before nor has he been this horny.

Very foul language. Avoid.

Poor Steve Trevor!

I’m a little torn on the episode, which seems to be par for the course for this third season. James Doohan is great and I’m very glad he gets an episode to shine but the actual plot here just leaves me cold. You have basically the burning of the Library of Alexandria and it feels like a footnote. I think my problem is that the lights aren’t played up as horrific by the direction despite the direction doing interesting things.

This one was just fine. You can tell there’s a glimmer of a good idea here since Fontana wrote the outline. It feels like basically just a filler episode to complete the commissioned number of episodes.

This one did not work for me. I can’t help but wonder if the original script was rewritten to make the overpopulation more explicit. The scenes with Spock are quite fun but I don’t think Kirk is characterized well and when you think about the solution to the overpopulation both suggested by Kirk and then the actual solution ends up being a bit too eugenicsy.

Man, Gotham Academy is a fantastic run! It lasted 18 issues in the n52/DC You, and then got 12 more issues in Rebirth. Since 2021, the original creators - Fletcher, Cloonan, and Kerschl, have been releasing one or two new stories that connect to that series per year, and those stories were collected recently in Gotham Academy: Maps of Mystery, well worth checking out as well.

This was a near perfect one until they kind of lose the racism thing and go anti war because the shift retroactively changes the anti racism message to kind of blame Lokai’s people slightly but outside of that I really loved this one. I know you both are loving Gorshin and he’s of course fantastic but Lou Antonio was also great.

This is one of my most favorite episodes, mainly for its clean view of what Kirk is like as a person, completely separate from being in Starfleet and being a Captain. The strong, dramatic storyline outweighed the several plot holes. And Sabrina Scharf was just so lovely in her strong performance. I'm happy to say that she's still with us today... She left acting in the 1970s and became an attorney. If anything bothers me, it's that at the end, it's not explained what then became of the badly damaged Enterprise, whose crew was unable to effect repairs no matter how long they had... I guess they radioed for help that eventually showed up...? The special effects in both the original 1968 version and the 2006 remastered version missed a key script point. In the battle to stop the asteroid, various phaser beams from different weapons banks were supposed to have been shown firing in a sequence to hit different points on the asteroid; then, in a grand finale (crippling the ship) all of them firing simultaneously. The original series in 1968 didn't have the budget to make those shots -- so they just used their stock footage of ship's main phasers. For the 2006 remastered version, I think the producers didn't understand the original intention of the script. But it's a detail in which the portrayal doesn't detract much from the enjoyable drama.

I didn’t hate that at least which is definitely a plus. It’s not great and is just a grab bag of tropes but I had a lot of fun with the utter camp of it all. I kind of wish we were able to get onto the Enterprise for the climax

How long do we want to bet before some Trek fans come here to defend the sexism in this one? While I was watching this one I just couldn’t help but think of how long it would be until 10 Things I Hate About You would be released and actually make sense of Taming of the Shrew. I understand the retro camp appeal but my god this drops the ball on the sexism. I think the woman showing up is meant to be a we really wanted to somehow get film star Elizabeth Taylor and never would get Elizabeth Taylor.
