Rediscover Detroit's Black Bottom: A Historic Neighborhood Resurrected Through an Immersive Exhibit
After eight years, the Black Bottom Street View exhibit is back at Bert’s Warehouse, a cornerstone of Detroit’s historic Black Bottom neighborhood! This immersive exhibit is open for free public viewing from July 6th to July 28th, 2024, at Bert’s Warehouse, 2727 Russell Street, from Tuesday to Sunday, 11 AM to 7 PM.
BBSV presents an incredible panoramic reconstruction of 20 blocks of the historic Black Bottom community, capturing life in the neighborhood just before its demolition. The exhibit features panoramas that stitch together over 2,000 archival photographs from the Burton Historical Collection. These photos, taken between 1949 and 1950 by the City of Detroit, were part of the eminent domain process that led to the neighborhood’s destruction.
Despite the challenges of segregation and poverty, Black Bottom residents created a vibrant cultural hub and center for Black-owned businesses and culture. Named after the dark, fertile marsh soils, the community thrived in Detroit. The BBSV exhibit pays homage to this rich history, honoring the legacy and stories of Black Bottom’s former residents.
Visit the Black Bottom Street View exhibit at Bert’s Warehouse and take a step back in time to experience the spirit and resilience of one of Detroit’s most historic neighborhoods.

Long ago even after Coleman Young to Kilpatrick Era, Detroit did have fewer homeless encampments. Most of them were living under the bridges and some parks the lower west side and lower east side areas. When Mayor Duggan, Church leaders and City Councils and neighborhood orgs. put their foot down demand them to go into shelters or the police will remove them all and their things possessed. Also private developers came in and sent their clean up crews to remove them away. Also another reason why Detroit does seen that much homeless encampments because if course high crime. Our hoods too ghetto to have homeless folks encamp in vacant lots next to occupy hoods. Block club folks and mostly black folks who are now living their Detroit ghetto hoods will bully, fight, rob and even shoot them out of their areas before they call they call the cops. Also Detroit does get bitter cold temps, a lot of homeless folks in Detroit will freeze to death if they not bundled up and find a nice warn shelters like they had no choice. This is not just Mayor Duggan announcing the press that Detroit has not have more homeless encampments then any other American Cities. It's matter of how The People of Detroit treats its homeless folks.

Sounds like ur just helping the ppl who already have homes get more land for cheap. Instead of helping the homeless and selling it to ppl with nothing and that actually need help or shelter

They need to stop this “land” thing and get into the metaverse no one is farming you can’t compete with say a Cargill but these ignorant baby boomers always want to teach the youth to farm like they’ve never been to the Produce Terminal on Fort Street let alone the eastern market. Sustainability for what if things get that bad there will be more to worry about than the 4-5 month growing season at this longitude smh 😒🙄😒🙄😒🙄😒🙄 stop patronizing this ignorance

I went to Liberty school from Kindergarden thru 8th grade. 1949 - 1957. I remember having Mrs. Miller as my kindergarden teacher, Mrs. Andrews as my first grade teacher. We had a huge slide in the kindergarden room and Mrs. Miller made us line up and go down the slide in order to take attendance. I was always to afraid to go down that slide so she never made me do it. I met my best friend there, Sharon Syasure.(probably spelled wrong) her and I used to play with the children's play kitchen stuff. She is still my friend today. I remember becoming a service squad girl when I was old enough and I was so proud of that important position. I had to make the children go inside the school from the playground when the bell rang. I had fun at the Friday night dances we had when I was in 8th grade. My mother always chaperoned. There was games in the hall and dancing in the gym. It was so much fun. We went on field trips, once to the Cranbrook planetarium. once to a symphony in Detroit. Many others as well. All of my teachers we outstanding. I'll never forget Miss Smith and Mr. Fortgang our PE teachers. They ran the Friday dances. We had a big pool and Miss Smith taught us to swim. Ball games in the field at the back of the playground. I loved going to Liberty School. I have fond memories and I am now 80 years old.

“Gateway to the Promised Land” MICHIGAN CENTRAL STATION Detroit, Michigan Michigan Central was my gateway to the "Promised Land" when I stepped off that New York Central Railroad train from the segregated south on that crispy cool early Sunday morning in June, 1954 to begin a new life in the Motor City I'd only read about in World Book encyclopedia. This defiant 9 year old black boy had arrived in the the bustling industrial capital of the world - where my father's family had migrated from Alabama after the war and now had good paying jobs in auto plants...and comfortable homes. I was anxiously searching for my father I'd never met before in Detroit's massive Cathedral of Commerce echoing sounds of clicking heels, muffled conversations, loud train announcements and mass confusion. After my Dad and I locked eyes and shook hands we walked over to the coffee shop where my stepmom Chris was having her second cup of coffee. This was the first time I had ever seen a black person sit at a lunch counter with whites. My grand entrance into the Motor City opened the door to unimagined possibilities for me and defines who I am today as I enjoy retirement and look forward to turning 80 later this year. Michigan Central Station has always been my favorite destination so I'm overjoyed that Ford Motor Company has resurrected Motown's masterpiece and restored my soul. Can't wait to return to the glorified site of my emancipation.... ALLLLL ABOARD!!! SAM Samuel Augustus Jennings

I worked in this building from 2007 - 2013. It's a shame to see it so dead now. (Not like it was teeming with life even back then...) I hope someone can liven it back up. Somehow. That building has the potential to be a city within a city. It already has its own zip code!

5031 Grandy Detroit is a City owned building former headquarters of the defunct "Department of Human Services " I worked there for nearly 30 years we left that building in 2012. It is an Albert Khan building it was maintained meticulously till 2013 now sits vacant. Much better shape than this, it's 5 stories.

Nice units, I’ve been living downtown resident for 16 years now, and I cannot believe the prices of these places , Brush Park is very nice and of course new and it seems quite dense, the north Corktown location townhouse is also very nice, the neighborhood is much more patchy though. I live in Lafayette Park ( great neighborhood) in a high-rise co-op on the 19th floor 2br/2bath, 1250 sq.ft. , our places, when I bought them 10 years ago are about 1/8th of the price of this ( spent about 30,000 in renovations then) with a higher monthly fee for co-op, covers everything including property taxes, but our views ( corner/ huge glass windows) are absolutely incredible of the whole city and we have a door, person, package and handling person, swimming pools, exercise/ yoga rooms , 2 beautiful large parks, meijers right behind us to walk too, Eastern Market a 10 minute walk, pro sports , restaurants,10 minute walk, every time I look at these places and go home. I think I’ve got the deal the century compared to what they’re charging now. But they are all very nice , glad to see so much development now, great video, thanks.
