    Way to go Spider! That was a great minimalist shave if I've ever seen one…the boys on the Cadre are going to have to up their game to beat this technique! Cheers MikeR. ( Totally agree with your analysis of the shaving soap that really counts is the bit right on your skin..the Roman's used just a bit of olive oil, so I'm told, and it was slick enough to get the job done, God knows what type of cutting tool they used..lol, certainly wasn’t a Feather ASD2.)

    Good to see you. Have you ever tried a shaving soap with soy wax in the list of ingredients (Southern Witchcraft and Matti Lindholm use soy wax in the soap they make). It is supposed to be uber slick.

    • @spidershaves
      @spidershaves Рік тому

      Southern Witchcrafts is one of my favorites! As yes, super slick.

  • @fhalden
    @fhalden Рік тому

    While I agree with you about the idea of cushion being sort of spurious, some lather does provide a benefit besides the mythical cushion and real slickness. A layer of lather keeps the right side of my face super hydrated while I start with the left. So, I dont need a thick layer, I just don't want skin showing through.

  • @wis1024

    My grandfather shaved with a gillette old type just like this. He had ground the teeth off the comb guard essentially making it guardless. I have his razor but never really shave with it. I wonder if that was a common thing to do back in the day.

    • @spidershaves
      @spidershaves 2 роки тому

      That's interesting. Maybe he was used to shaving with a straight razor, but didn't like the upkeep. This basically turns your DE into a straight on a stick. If you bought a cheap old type and swapped out the base plate, you could still get some shave time in with his razor, if that's a connection you'd like to make.

    • @wis1024
      @wis1024 2 роки тому

      @Spider Shaves I've been on the look out for one. Might just try to get good at using it as is like you've shown. I'll certainly take my time though. That's what brought me to your video. I've been reminiscing my grandfather a lot lately. I'm pretty sure when he was younger he did use a straight so that makes sense. Also, he would go sometimes months without shaving and it was probably the most effective way he thought to tackle that kind of growth and like you said not have all the straight up keep.

    Man you love that Feather more than me! It’s a great shaver and very efficient when you pair the right blade and understand the optimum cutting angle. Plus it’s so mild I can touch up almost as much as I want. I usually use Persona Med Prep’s, Feather or Kai. It’s still one of the best built/looking razors out there IMO

    • @spidershaves
      @spidershaves 3 роки тому

  • @greg6162

    If you had to buy one vintage razor what would it be? I was thinking of a Fatboy or slim adjustable figuring it would give me a broad range of play being adjustable. I think I’d get a Rhodium plated refurb from razor emporium considering there’s so many moving parts and I want it to last. Plus the TTO aspect appeals to my RAD rationality being I don’t have one. I just hope the shave is unique enough to be worth it. PaulH had a custom fatboy that was straight out of a superhero movie with the most unique paint and finish I’ve seen on a razor. I minimized my razor collection to about 6 razors that all serve a unique purpose for me. Like Feather AS-D2 mild everyday, Karve stainless B/C SB plates for a few days of growth, EJ 3one6 because I haven’t used it enough and the classics 34C and DE89. So a vintage adjustable would be my next/last razor if I do get one. I’m just kicking myself because the price of them in average condition on Etsy was like $60-$130 sometimes more?! Could’ve gotten those for like $30 or less when I started wet shaving 7yrs ago but I need to own a vintage Gillette adjustable if you have any advice on my situation I’d appreciate it… great video!

    • @spidershaves
      @spidershaves 3 роки тому

      The fatboy is my favorite vintage razor. By a lot! You should be able to find one for around $50, if you don’t care about having the case. Possibly less if you spend some time hunting on eBay, or the BSTs.

  • @greg6162
    @greg6162 3 роки тому

    That Feather AS-D2 is a still my favorite razor even 7yrs later. Just bought GFT Spanish Leather in the big tub and Pinaud Clubman Special Reserve aftershave hoping it pairs halfway decent as I don’t wanna use TOBS Sandalwood aftershave with it. Still the best $185 I’ve spent in my shaving career with that feather razor. It’s a little adjustment with the optimal cutting angle at 40-45°… but I think it’s more flexible than that depending on the blade IMO

    • @spidershaves
      @spidershaves 3 роки тому

      I use it just like every other razor. I never thought there was any adjustment on the angle compared to others.
