Приєднався 9 лют 2023
Maikel Wijtmans: born in 1974 and residing in Amsterdam, The Netherlands (wheelsabroad@hotmail.com). Exploration of cities abroad by inline skates and by bike, with 6 continents covered from 1998-2025. On the lookout for beautiful/sketchy/historic/challenging/awesome places whenever I travel for work or vacation. Gradually uploading past and current videos, from early picture-only movies via iPhone movies to GoPro movies, and from Dutch to English audio. I hope to show how urban biking and inline skating trips provide both adrenaline boosts and unique insights in ordinary life of cities. I owe Amsterdam, the bike capital of the world for taking me under its wings and teaching me the ‘Amsterdam mobility flair’ that has enabled me to traverse small/huge metropolitan areas all over the world by inline skates and bike. The UA-cam profile picture pays tribute to my hometown (also depicting my skates and bike), so does the folder 'Wheels@home' showing various videos of Amsterdam.
🚲Santiago: Biking the RICH PART of town and the ANDES FOOTHILLS #Chile #Mountains
I left the Metropolitan Park and biked my way cross-town to the foothills of the Andes Mountains. In the process I came across the rich part of Santiago. After climbing and some more climbing I ended up on a spot 1 km above sea level, overlooking the city. The way back to the city center involved me going downhill on a busy street during Friday afternoon rush hour: it was awesome and an adrenaline rush! Fun fact: while editing this video I celebrated my first-year UA-cam anniversary!

After several inline skating trips, it was time to bike in Santiago (Chile). I rented myself a good bike and took off to the Santiago Metropolitan Park. After some climbing, I was rewarded with stunning views of the Andes, the longest mountain range in the world. The views kept coming and coming. It was cool!

Leaving the Central Station (Estación Central), I continued into the west of Santiago. I passed the University of Santiago, high-rise neighborhoods, colorful streets, an alley named after my home country, and many other fascinating aspects of the city. I decided to take on Avenida Libertador Bernardo O'Higgins, locally known as Alameda. It is the main street of the city of Santiago, Chile, and kilometers long. The traffic was hectic and I had to battle the city buses and a somewhat 'unique' bike lane. I ended up at the Central Station (Estación Central), which I explored inside and out.

I made my way from the city center past Universidad de Chile to Barrio San Diego. Street life got a bit grittier and more authentic, which I like! I ended up in Barrio Franklin, previously the site of a big slaughterhouse but now up and coming and attracting hipsters for its markets. Watch me being harassed by dogs too! This was also the end of my first large inline skating trip in Santiago and...

🛼Santiago (Chile): the Andes mountains and the Mapocho river. Let the South America adventures begin
Переглядів 7012 місяці тому
Equipped with a pretty severe jetlag (I arrived only about 30 hours ago) I took on the streets of Santiago, Chile, by inline skates. I started in Sanhattan, Santiago's business district, and made my way along the Mapocho river. Along the way I did a scary bridge and explored the bohemian Barrio Bellavista district. And so the first of a long string of South America videos was published.

I explored Milano, Italy, by bike. Part 2 led me past several grittier parts of the city, such as San Siro, Giambellino-Lorenteggio and Corvetto. Come and explore these non-touristy sides of the great city of Milano. A bonus will be a visit to the famous San Siro Stadium (AC Milan, Inter Milan) on a quiet day.

I explored Milano, Italy, by bike. Part 1 started with a quick visit to Duomo Square for a celebration of Republic Day. Right after that, I ventured into the suburbs to the north and visited Quarto Oggiaro, a rougher part of town. I serendipitously came across the site for the largest but one student campus of Italy.

Thanks, Methodos100. I am from flatland: The Netherlands is completely and utterly flat, not very exciting. So, even with haziness the Andes still impress me a lot! Throughout my whole stay (6 days) I kept being captivated by them, no matter how often I saw them. I can only imagine how they will look on clear days. Have to come back there in Dec-March!
Since you mention that you like visiting universities, were you able to go to the San Joaquin campus? It's the only Santiago campus I know of that has bike lanes inside.
Hi, thanks for your comment. I checked my GPX map for the bike trip and I was actually very close without realizing that. But about 1 km before the campus I turned right. What a bummer, would have been cool to check out those campus bike lanes.
@@wheelsabroad Maybe next time. I'm looking forward to the biking videos. I think you did a good job trying to show the different faces of Santiago.
@methodos100: I got your comment by e-mail but somehow it does not show here (not sure why). Thanks for leaving your valuable comment. Going off the beaten path is what I try to do often, as I very much like experiencing authentic city life. It is reassuring if a local like you confirms that I have been in a more authentic area, it surely felt more authentic! This was the last skate video, but there are 4 bike videos coming up. I will be visiting extremes: Las Condes, but also La Legua. Maipu is also on the menu. Stay tuned! Unfortunately I did not go to San Bernardo, although I knew the name and had looked up where it was when I was in Santiago.
Hola!
@@methodos100 Ah, that explains it, thanks. And yes: I have see many good things in Santiago and thoroughly enjoyed my time there, especially the many different aspects I have seen.
Where are the Celinto Catayente Towers?
You got me there for a second ;-) everipedia.org/wiki/lang_en/Celinto_Catayente_Towers. I remember the scene from the movie, but not the name of the fictional towers.
Beatifull city 👏👏👏
Yes, I liked the city too. The location next to the Andes mountains was super!
One of most beautiful ct in d world
Hi, thanks for your comment. Yes, I think Santiago is a very nice city! Much more coming up on this city.
saw your other vids yesterday, you're badass! greetings from El Bosque
Hi, thanks for your comment. I am doing my best to make videos that show people cool, interesting and unique stuff about cities. Hope you enjoy it!
Hi, thanks for your comments! Always good to hear input from a native, who will be informed much better than this Dutchie 😉 I have heard the stories about the slight deterioration of parts of the city from other natives, yes. In the second half of the Alameda video (coming up soon), I will skate further west to Lo Prado. In a few weeks there will also be biking videos coming up. Rest assured that I will cover more than the 5 % you talk about. I enjoyed exploring many aspects of Santiago very much. All videos will be in a playlist called ‘Santiago’. P.S. The jetlag disappeared after a few days, as expected.
Saludos!
Thank you for the comment. I can imagine this is a surprise to you this, yes. I myself had not noticed the monument before, curiously enough.
Still nice but the bíg wave of migration from the Caribbean took its toll on Santiago..
Hi Juan, thank you for your comment. I thought Santiago was a cool city and I liked it very much. Several more videos will be upcoming (stay tuned!). From several Chileans I have heard similar comments as the one you make, yes. I should say that I did not readily notice it when I was there, but of course it was my first time there.
Interesting video, never had see a Santiago tour on wheels!. by the way its not winter, its spring that the reason of the good weather, Santiago had an ok climate all year long (mediterranean climate) not in the rest of Chile, I live in the south and still cold here (not mediterranean climate!)
Thanks for the comment. I try to provide unique views on cities by traversing them on inline skates. There are many more videos on Santiago in the pipeline, next one coming up this Sunday (old city center). The weather in Santiago was great when I was there (July 2024), but I can certainly imagine elsewhere in Chile it will be different.
Muy interesante tu video, quizá también un poco arriesgado al desafiar a muchos conductores "acelerados" de mi país. Saludos
Hi, thank you for your comment and great that you liked the video. I thoroughly enjoyed exploring Chile and Santiago and there will be several additional videos coming up. You are right: I had to be vigilant with respect to car traffic. Luckily, I never felt unsafe as I have gained experience in urban inline skating in all sorts of cities. For example, check out my Cairo/Giza videos for the most extreme inline skating in terms of intensity/traffic ;-)
This part of Milan reminds me a lot of how Brooklyn and Queens can be, with the industrial yards and shabby housing with sketchy streets. Though I think Brooklyn is a lot more dangerous hahah
I have been to parts of Brooklyn before, but that is a long time ago. I did not feel unsafe in the areas of Milan featured in the video. I do enjoy sketchy streets from time to time. I consider these as much part of a city as the center.
Great trip to a glorious part of the UK 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
Thank you. It was an impressive trip.
I'm so happy I came across this channel. I'm looking into studying abroad for my Masters degree and I'm looking at universities in Italy and you can really feel the vibes of every city you go to
Hi Matthew, thank you for your nice comment. Relaying the vibe of cities, in and outside the city center and in both the good and rougher parts, is exactly what I intend to achieve with my videos. Very happy to hear that this worked for you! Coming up in the next few weeks is a bike movie on Milano, where I explore the rougher areas at the edge of town. On a personal note, you may have seen that I myself was a student in Bologna 24 years ago and it was an awesome time.
Hi Matthew, since you expressed an interest in Italian cities (Milan specifically?), here are my last two videos of the Italy string (they won’t become fully public for another few weeks). This involves biking in the rougher Milano areas outside the city center. Probably not the areas you want to live in: according to my online resources, expats are discouraged to live there. Congratulations for the comprehensive information and the video that shows not only the downtown but also other areas of the city, even if only a drop! I'm born and live in Turin for more than 50 years.
Hi, a comment like this from a local means a lot. Thanks. I do like to venture outside of the centers to also get a feeling of how authentic life in a city is. Lately I have tried to add more information, not only on touristy stuff but also on other items of potential interest. I visited your city for just 1 day but it was very worth it. Beautiful city!
The background loop music is driving me crazy
Hi, thanks for the comment. As I am trying to finetuning the channel (I am a newbee) I have been struggling with finding the right approach for background music. Early on, several folks told me to put in background music, so that is what I did. Bought myself a limited set of song licenses from Adobe. But I sometimes think music takes away from the authentic background street audio. Curious what your opinion would be. Is it the particular song that you don't like, or the fact that a short piece is looping, or the fact that there is even background music at all (I checked out your videos and they don't have any music at all it seems)?
@@wheelsabroad personally I prefer listening the the surroundings. I think music is ok when you have for example a time-lapse section. Yes, it's the shot loop that triggers me.
@@elfootman Thanks for your opinion. I personally prefer the audio of the surroundings too but too many people told me early on they missed music. The use of loops is a pragmatic technical fix, I'll see what my options are.
I'm happy you enjoyed the view, I've been living in Milano since my birth, but almost never go to Duomo anymore, too crowded. Today, after more than a year, I finally went back :)
I liked the city center of Milano a lot. But I know what you mean with the crowds. Back home in Amsterdam we have similar problems: some areas are too crowded with tourists and are therefore ignored by locals. Good thing I went to the Duomo Square so early....hope you enjoyed your Duomo time today too!
This was so awesome, Is the strip flat or there many hills? I'm newer to skating, and I am going to Vegas next week and taking my skates, so I want to skate the strip. I am just still weary of hills.
Hi Ruby, the Strip is not hilly at all, although there is a slight gradual inclination from north to south (see the GPS output at 19.16 min in the video). But that should be no problem. The spikes you see in the GPS output are not hills but escalators and stairs that are sometimes the only means to cross an intersection. If you take the main road, take note of the traffic! If you are newer to skating, consider taking sidewalks only. Enjoy! Simply because this was Vegas with all its glamour/lights/sounds/etc, it was a unique experience and different from the other cities worldwide I have skated (which you can find on my channel too).
just got back to NC after 2 weeks there you are brave to ride bike traffic was unreal and no laws that i could discern
Thanks for the comment. Yeah, the Cairo and Giza traffic was quite something. I enjoyed being immersed in it, but vigilance was key. You are right that traffic laws were hard to identify. I was amazed about how Egyptians cross streets.
Consider me 110!
Thanks and welcome, Seth! Appreciate the interest. Your channel looks cool and I hope you are having a good time in Germany (our big neighbor - I am from The Netherlands). Your channel is also a reminder to me that I should make a channel trailer! FYI: I have Berlin videos in the archive (biking and inline skating) that still need to be put on UA-cam.
Nice video. But you've missed the Schnoor. At 11:43 go right and you would have been there en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schnoor maybe next time ;o)
Thanks for the feedback. How odd I missed that, I even see the sign at 11.43 now :-( Seems like it would have been worth visiting, for sure. I always try to do my homework before I take off, but did not see this one being mentioned. By the way, stay tuned for more Bremen videos coming up the next few weeks (51 km of biking, and another 20 km of inline skating to the north and east).
Wonderful, Thanks for visiting Egypt and using our bikes ( Be a Biker)
It was my pleasure and you guys were a life saver, really. Leaving Egypt without biking in Cairo was no option for me and you guys saved the day, as I was able to bike around on my very last day in Egypt. I recommend Be A Biker to all those people having an interest in biking in Cairo.
Is it safe to cycle in cairo ?
Many people would consider it unsafe to cycle in Cairo. Also locals told me so. Cars are all over the place and very assertive. There are hardly any bike lanes. I felt safe and in control throughout and truly had an awesome time, but I have a lot of experience in biking in dense urban areas. I would only recommend cycling in Cairo if you’re very experienced. I hope this answer helps. In the next few weeks, I plan to upload a video on the cycling and inline skating culture in Cairo.
My guy, seeing you hit the quays in the first minute of your vid had me wincing! As a Dubliner who cycles through the city regularly that is one hairy spot to be navigating on skates, you're a braver man than me! Glad you enjoyed our cicy.
Hi Rob, thanks for your comment. I enjoyed the city for sure especially given the good weather. My hometown of Amsterdam has taught me a lot about urban skating, that helps. Glad you are a cyclist too and my impression was that Dublin had quite a few bike lanes already! I have another video of me and my buddy cycling through Dublin and to Howth (ua-cam.com/video/cXcUlEabrl8/v-deo.html). If you're interested, stay tuned for the next upload this Sunday: skating at Dublin airport ;-)
Welcome to my home city, but Northern Ireland isn't a country my friend. Fáilte go hÉirinn. Abú
Thank you for your comment! Great to have seen your home city, I enjoyed it very much. I am aware of Northern Ireland not being its own country, I remember the Troubles era (I am from 1974). The 'one-day, two-countries' in the thumbnail refers to me doing another inline skate trip later that day in Dublin (ua-cam.com/video/WyzLKGI4N_o/v-deo.html). From a formal point of view, I skated in both the UK and Ireland that day. But I am aware of and respect the different opinions associated. All the murals and remnants of The Troubles left quite an impression with me. We also went out into East Belfast by bike: ua-cam.com/video/i7d-gHHRkYI/v-deo.html
Thanks for bringing this to my attention because I now realise my wording in the thumbnail was unintentionally a bit ambiguous. I removed it.
@@wheelsabroad nice, no, i understand, it's probably just a glimpse into our mind set in North eastern Ireland, people on the shankill would wrongly suggest that N.Ireland is not Ireland and I, a falls road man know we are as Irish as anyone else on our cold damp beautiful isle. I grew up in Belfast during the troubles in the mid 80's, still here, it is like a different planet now compared to how it was for the good and the bad.. It's nice and still strange to see stranger's and tourist's in our area's. Glad you enjoyed it, and safe travels.

We really need more bike lanes. And better bike lanes! I'm very familiar with some of the route you cycled through the centre 😮

New cairo, obour, madinaty, 6th of October, zayed, shrouk, 10th of rammadan??? All of those are in cairo and Better than the historic part
Hi, thanks for the heads up. I did not have time to bike through the whole larger metropolitan area, but good to hear that biking around in the satellite cities of Cairo works better than biking in Cairo itself.

What did you think of exploring the bay area?
I liked it very much. I have lived in the US for 4.5 years but somehow never made it to the Bay area, so this was my first time there. To me as a European, SF has somewhat of a European touch, which became especially evident when I biked away from downtown. I was not expecting SF to be as hilly as it was. It gave some cool extra challenges to the biking. Of course, Lombard street had to be done 🙂
@@wheelsabroad Had to be! HAD TO BE. You shouldda tried Marin here in Bezerkeley. It is one of the steepest paved grades in the US. Plenty of human and animal death on it. :(

@@mgevirtz I have not. Thanks for the note. Bikes have certainly played an important role over here in The Netherlands during World War II.
damn cairo looks like a dump
Some parts in this video show rougher sides of the Cairo area, but every city has its own character and that makes every city unique. Part 3 of this bike trip (coming up next Sunday) will show some different parts of the city.
Thanks for sharing. I am visiting Amsterdam from Seattle for a few days this summer with my family and I wanted to see what skating might be like there. I saw they have skate rental there which is great because I can not pack all my inline stuff. Seems like a great way to explore the city :)
Amsterdam (in fact, the whole country) is packed with bike lanes, which in principle are also great for inline skating and exploring the city. Compared to US cities (I have lived there and also visited Seattle), the city is compact and bike-centric, not car-centric. Mind two things, though: 1) Bike lanes are often full and Amsterdam cyclists are assertive, including folks on fatbikes and the likes; 2) The tram rails and how to safely cross them :-) My Wheels@home folder on this channel has more videos on this. Enjoy Amsterdam by skates!
Is it dangerous area?
People usually warn for the area surrounding USC, yes. From what I understand from people who worked at USC it isn't as bad as it used to be, though.
probably its nearby downtown? @@wheelsabroad
@@anuwatsongkarn1443 Yes. In the video there are some shots on downtown. In another video, I start right across from the campus and skate to downtown, so you can see how close the campus is to downtown. For LA standards, it is close. See here: ua-cam.com/video/fv1Sl8wrzOo/v-deo.html
