The 400 Pontiac was also available in 1979 - with the four speed manual only.
Center caps: the gold bird emblem was a Special Edition only item (also gold Pontiac emblem on the nose, steering center cap, door panel crank caps and larger phoenix graphic on the C pillar) . I had to replace a few center caps back in the day. Ordered them at the Pontiac parts counter and had them try to sell me the red ones, insisting gold didn't exist. Also the hex vs round cap. Hex was plastic and introduced for the rest of the line in 1980. Dealer also tried to substitute those when my 79 had chromed steel round caps. Something else overlooked in all the firebird stuff when wheels get discussed is the WS-7 option. That was WS-6 but with drum rear brakes. It got the larger front and rear sway bars, 8" snowflake wheels with the polished spokes but lacked the rear disc brakes included on WS-6.
The '77 Trans Am didn't come with the 403 Olds engine. That was the '79 Trans Am. I owned a '77 400 ci Pontiac motor.
Starting in 1977, the traditional Pontiac V8 was not used in any area that adapted California emissions standards because they couldn’t pass the stricter standards. This was mainly in California and high altitude areas. The Olds 403 was offered in place of the 400. 350 powered Pontiacs had an Olds 350 and some even had a small block Chevy 350. Everywhere else that followed federal emissions standards had Pontiac V8 availability. The Olds 403 became the standard engine in 1979 everywhere in any Trans Am or Formula equipped with an automatic transmission because Pontiac 400 production was halted after 1978. They stockpiled a number of W72 400 Pontiac engines for use in the 10th Anniversary Trans Ams and Formulas but that choice mandated a 4 speed manual until they were all used up. They never put a 4 speed behind an Olds 403.
There were 3 engines available in 1977. The information about those engines is correct in the video.
I like the video. But history is different. Aftermarket t tops were designed first before Production had an option to them. American hatch corp. Texas t tops and cars and concepts had their own design. Outside. As aftermarket. Creating the largest possible glass roof in t top design. And fake . Well that would be hurst Burying outside mfgs for dominance. Of the name and marketing
Do you know something? I still find hard to believe that Linda was actually gonna let Bob sleep with Logan’s mom just so he could be a member of that gardening club.
I had a 1979 firebird formula with Fisher t-tops. These cars look cool but are pieces of shit.
Thanks for the heads up ... now can I copy you? well I hope not too much!
its too bad the shacker hood was not funtional after 1972.
I never understood that. They blanked off the shaker and made it non functional starting in 1973. But the shaker used on the 1974 GTO was functional. I also believe the Formula’s Ram Air snorkel scoops could be ordered as functional through 1975.
Got 1978 trans am 342. Posi , super t10 , and w72 car has correct intake chrome valve covers but left factory without the shaker call outs wich I have heard of before nothing there maybe they ran out? But anyway got cheap unmolstead barn find and got her running purrs brakes fixed and only thing left is electrical dash is completely out then it's cruise or ripping tires !
yeah, those Zebra connectors for the screen are a pain in the ass. They're supposed to be shock resistant connections. In my experience a bump or nothing at all will cause them to not work or go dim -lol. I just took mine apart again. took about an hour to get the screen back to normal. Didn't help that all the pieces fell apart on opening and I had to experiment with getting it all lined up correctly after cleaning. Fortunately, I haven't had a lot of button problems...just the screen from time to time and the power supplies frequently die. I finally just stopped looking for these odd ball power supplies and rigged up my own power source.
Non debatable
Thankyou very much for this video. I had the same problem and would never have found the answer without your help. Mine was on line 519 but did the same job. Thanks again
Thank you so much, you saved me a day!

Thanks 😊👍 just what I was looking for.....
Hello thanks for posting this video. It was very helpful. I'm restoring a 78 Trans am. It has the full roof glass t tops . It also has the body by Fisher tag riveted to the body . I'm now more confused. Have you seen that before on a 78 ? It was originally platinum.
Poorly worded question but I think I get what you are asking. Every single Firebird body was made by Fisher. Has nothing to do with the T-Tops, they all say that. If it is a full roof, it's likely an aftermarket CNC roof. Also, it shouldn't be riveted on. The tag should just be bolted on
Our 78 Solar Gold had the fisher smoked t-top. Best looking compared to odd looking Hurst ones.
David Kautzman
Do you still have your M3? If so, how is it holding up, and, have you made any modifications to it?
What ever happened with this?
I ordered a Y88 Special Edition Solar Gold Trans Am in 1978. It was exactly like the one in the video with a special bird decal. I ordered the gold T tops by Fisher . You’re exactly right about them being confusing because when it arrived at the dealer in Lincolnton NC, it had one silver top and one gold top. I traded it two years later for a new Honda in Hickory NC due to rising gas prices and 10mpg. Sure wish I had it back today.
I realized that the 1-4 buttons were working fine. I removed one to check and noticed that the legs were wide "open". So besides cleaning the contacts with contact cleaner, I opened the legs of each button, that made the buttons much less wiggly after I put them back. That fixed it for me.
I enjoyed that! I have a 1977 SE Y81 I’m thinking about adding Hurst Tops to, am I crazy? I’m not sure how rare my Y81, W72, AC automatic car is.
Leave it original, it's a rare duck.

great video thank you
Ok let me help you out with this one as well. All early 77 shakers were a "low rise, small mouth and had a sharp peak" just like the hood did. They also all said T/A 6.6 on pontiac 400 W72 cars with the "german style" lettering. Mid year 77 got the redesigned shaker that remained till 81. The myth of only olds 403 cars getting 6.6 liter decals is not accurate but is commonly believed. Between 77-78 there were 3 different types of lettering. As far as 78 cars not getting shaker decals unless they were Y88 as you show in video or Y82 s/e cars. This i have never heard of before and i am pretty sure is not a reality. Also all 79's with a pontiac 400 were left over W72 engines from 78 and were rated @ 220 hp and were backed by a borg/warner super T10 only in 79 with 3.23 rear gears. 77-78 400 cars came both with auto and 4 speed and even automatics could be ordered with 3.23 gears that were standard on all manual trans T/A's and only 400 powered cars got the 2.43 , 1.61 , 1.23, 1.00 geared Super T/10 as did earlier 74-76 455 & 400 cars.
What was said is correct. In 1978, a regular Trans Am did not receive a shaker decal if it was an L78 400 or an L80 403. Only the W72 engine came with a shaker decal this year, the T/A 6.6. However, all SE's this year received the shaker decals anyway. This also happened in 1980, there were no shaker decals unless the car was a T/A 4.9.
@@maxthe222 there was only a 4.9 in 80 or 305 for california cars. I was adding what u said. I wasnt disagreeing. So many people have misinformation and make up stuff. Ive seen brand new 77 & 78 w72 cars brand new in car and driver 1977 and the shaker says 6.6 liter and this point brought up in the magazine that its wrong but its not cause GM did whatever. Again the car was brand new
The 1978 4spd w72 cars got 342 rear gears one year only
@@rooster68able yes u r right. 78 4 spd got 3.42s i dont know why between 77 and 79 they made such a small change
OK I'll help you here. Only Y88 1978 Solar Gold cars received the gold face WS6 snowflakes. Possibly some Y82 s/e cars as well. The rest of the 78 -81 WS6 cars in all other colors , had the inlays only painted, not the face. Also, 1981 7" snowflakes were different. The spokes were thinner and the triangle shape on the outer edge of the wheel were "open" not closed like 77-80. As you said, Only 10th ann. cars got the plastic hexagon shaped center caps on "turbo wheels" All other 79's still received the metal round shaped ones' from 77 & 78. All TURBO wheels were made by "Appliance" and all Snowflakes were made by "Western" all 80-81 cars came with the plastic center caps like on the 79 tenth ann. cars. I have owned around 20 77-81 cars along with my brother and my close friends all had them as well. Not to mention i'm like "rainman" with these cars
That's an absolute lie. All WS6 Trans Ams in 1978 received the solid gold face wheel. It was absolutely not exclusive to the Y88 and if the Y88 did not come with a WS6 special performance package, they came with standard 15x7 snowflakes
@@maxthe222 i was referring to Y88 cars not all had color coded wheels or steering columns . Some were black wheels with gold inserts. As for the wheels. The WS6 cars had the entire face painted gold. Ive personally owned 15 77-81 cars over 30 years ago. The info online is not accurate. I see alot of mis info on there
@@frankartale1026 Yes they did. Every single Y88 received tan steering columns and steering wheels. They never received any black wheels of any kind. The only two types of wheels on a Y88 was a gold 15x7 snowflake or if equipped with the WS6 handling package, the solid gold 15x8 wheel. There were also thousands of non-special edition solar Gold Trans Ams, these could have received black rally, two wheels or black steering columns and steering wheels.
Great Video, The Y88 cars all got " Gold Tinted" fischer t-tops and less than 1700 were 4spd cars. The Hurst tops were a mess. Installed at all different locations. I had a 77 with Hatch Tops from the original owner and when i removed the headliner it was a hacked up mess. 78 was a crazy year, all different variations. Some had Color Coded steering wheel & column , Some had Black Steering wheel and column. There were 2 different columns used. a 77 style and a 78. Even some Y88 cars had this color coded column issue and seat belts as well. Some were black belts and some were tan and all of the Y88 cars had tan interior.
How is she not in juvie?
Louise is better than Cher in Moonstruck. " Snap Out of It" lol
I always liked the Fisher T tops better - they’re bigger.
They also seal better (although they also can leak).
rims can be bought at swap meets ... you NEED to look at the vin-tag ... the fender tag ... the door sticker ... & the trunk sticker ... am i the only one that knows this?
Apparently, because there is no trunk sticker. The VIN number and the data tag on the cow have absolutely nothing to do with the options or what wheels it came with. The only way to know what wheels the car came with factory is with the PHS dealer invoice or the original build sheet
its a shame that cars became this way
Thanks Buddy ❤
Louise has a licence to Slap!
I did exactly wut you did, put it back togetther and it doesn't work anymore! WTF?
obviously too late, but do you mean the button doesn't work? or the whole charger?? if charger? it was probably fine... just the LCD zebra rubber wasn't connected properly so you just couldn't "see" that it was working.... unlike this and other videos, my Technoline BC900, doesn't have the plastic (grey) support for the LCD, which holds the rubber in position :( mine seems to be a stroke of luck whether or not the rubber connector lines up correctly or not :(
I prefer the look of the original 77'
👍
I have a 1977 SE (documented through PHS and with the original build sheet) with Fisher T-Tops and chrome trim. I wonder if someone went to the trouble of changing out the tops later?
Yes it was done later.
Unless "CC1" appears on either the PHS or the build sheet, it was done after it was produced at Norwood in 1977.
You said it has PHS saying it’s a SE. Does it say Y81 SE with no t-tops? And then someone added the Fisher tops later? All 1977 Y82 SE’s come with Hurst tops.
Typically Y81 was SE without T-top and Y82 was SE with T-Top.
79 that had 4wheel disc brakes also had hexagon center caps. Mostly late 79s only SE .and only deep dish wheels..I have one. With original paper work
My early '79 Formula has 4 Whhel dics, WS6 , 8" Snowflakes and Round Centers. Later in the ' 79 Model year they may have changes to the Hex Centers.
I have a 78 Solar Gold with the WW7 hood decal and it was born in April 78 and shipped on 5-4-78 White Pontiac in Ky. It has the Hurst Hatches but no Y88 designation since those were made after July 78. Always hoped it to be a pre-Y88 but i cant located the build sheet to confirm anything and the PHS papers don't have any real info on the pre-Y88's. It came with the W72 400 / Auto and my family has owned it since 1982 still has most of its original paint except the hood. It was stripped and primed due to the heathers of the decal peeling up and we worried about rust. It has sit for over 30 years in dry storage and I'm now working on saving money to get it back on the road
If the PHS doesn't have Y88 on it, then it's just a Gold Trans Am, and not a Y88.
@@googleusergp exactly right

It's funny how you don't notice these subtle running gags until someone compiles them
Now, in 1979 they had no L-78, Right? And on these, were the L-78's auto and W-72's 4-speed?
Yes you are correct! I owned a Black/Black and Gold Special Edition with T-Tops the W-72 performance package with chrome valve covers, heavy duty sway bars, 4 speed, 4 wheel disc brakes, Starlight deep dish wheels, and NO AC. It was nice... I miss it!
@@MrHaps-yq3nu I feel your pain, Trust me!
w72 w/ 4spd only in 1979
@@victorvondoom2386 That could be true, but I'm not entirely sure. I thought from 1977 to 1979, the W-72 only came with a 4 speed stick. The W-72 was definitely geared much lower than the standard engine/automatic Trans AM package. I don't think you could get a stick with the stock engines though. Don't quote me on either remark, I'm getting old and can't remember sh!t. I do remember it was pretty quick compared to anything else at the time. I also had a '75 Trans AM. The '75 had a great top end performance, but was a slug off the line. My '79 was polar opposite. Fast off of the line, great up to about 85mph, but not much left over 105mph. It was by far my most favorite car I ever owned.
@@victorvondoom2386 only until they ran out early in the year, from pontiac stocking back blocks from 1978. after that, no more w72.
