In addition to an earlier post, my grandfather and his crew were black. I still have relatives there in Cowan and Winchester. I tried to post a picture but not successful.

My grandfather, Arch C. Smith and one of his sons, Ferrell Smith worked on the railroad tracks . He was foreman of one of two crews that worked on the tracks DH&G Co. They laid all the railroad track up to and on Lakeview Mountain and later the track and plant foundations for the cement company in Cowan. This info is found in "Franklin County Historical Review July, 1977 Vol. VIII No. 2 Page 82. Their names are also on page 84 as well as the Monument in front of the Railroad Museum
