    Too bad there isn't a better reverse/sixth gear bearing available that will not destroy the main shaft when the bearing fails. Maybe some type of bronze or babbitt with pressurized oiling could address this weak point? As we all know total sales of zf6 equipped c4's was less than 60,000 units. Used parts supplies are getting harder to find. Amazes me zfdoc or others have not came up with a more permanent solution to this known failure point (aside from external oiling system that adds weight, complexity etc. etc.

    Hello, how often do you have to overhaul the bearing from reverse gear? I currently have the same problem and am considering trying to get a second gearbox which I can then change in case of failure and then have time to overhaul the defective one. How much work is it to change the input shaft in case I get a transmission of a normal c4? I have a ZR-1 with the longer input shaft? I am a normal car driver, but live in Germany, where it is no problem to drive faster than 130mph. The two videos are really great and the way you describe everything is also super explained and understandable. 3 times thumbs up.

      Never heard of a trani making noise when making a left turn!! Check the oil level of your trani. The only thing I can think of at the moment is a front wheel bearing, maybe even a rear bearing. This means it might be the right side front wheel bearing. You're making a left turn so it's always the opposite side making the noise.

    • @JoshuaGalerBluexElectronics
      @JoshuaGalerBluexElectronics 3 роки тому

      @@vettef6929 The fluid is full. Just put in 2.3 quarts or so of Amsoil. I was thinking about the wheel bearing too. According to ppl with similar problems and forums it seems to be that the dmf is failing or maybe the throwout bearing. Doesn't seem to be inside the transmission. We'll find out when I drop the transmission within the year.

    • @vettef6929
      @vettef6929 3 роки тому

      @@JoshuaGalerBluexElectronics I would try to find out where the noise is coming from before I remove the trani. A car wont drive without one.! The dmf makes noise mostly at idle and doesn't care if you make a left turn or not. Take your car on a road where you are alone and drive constantly 35 mph. Then turn you steering wheel from left to right like the slalom skiers do. You will then hear the noise every time you turn the steering wheel to the left. Then replace both left and right wheel bearings. Good luck

    4:24 wait... are all the gears like that? With the removable cones? Because I'm having visions of a drop in dog engagement kit! Machine up the required parts as usual then the gear side dogs can simply take the place of the cones. Slotting in whose handy recesses. Most dog shift conversions that use stock gears machine off the cone and stock dogs then weld on new larger dogs. I pondered the realities of dogs that fit over stock cones and are retained by snap rings in the groove behind the stock dogs but didnt figure most trannies would have enough room to make all that fit.

    • @vettef6929
      @vettef6929 5 років тому

      Sorry for getting back to you so late. It's the reverse gear that seized up on me, not the 6th gear. 6th gear isn't rotating about the shaft while in gear. Had to look up all the emails from Bill Boudreau ZFdoc.com. We probably sent 100 emails back and forth and discussed not only this theme. This is what he wrote in short form: Look at the reverse gear to possibly see how well detailed the oil port was finished and if the factory at least even chamfered it at the reverse gear ID surface that feeds (actually draws oil from) the needle cage. The reverse gear shoulder recess feeds the needle cage. Hope this helps Vette F6

    • @vettef6929

      Yes, Bill is a great guy. It might take a day or so for him to answer, but he will. The blue tag trani I took apart in the video was also for training purposes, but this trani will never be put together again. There are just too many parts burned or defect. He wrote it wold take about $1800 to repair. So I'll keep all good parts until I tear down the trani I'm using now, might need some parts there.
