    Policy briefs are usually 2 to 4 pages long. Policy makers and key stakeholders are not interested in reading long papers. They are just interested mainly in the problem and the solutions basically the recommendations.

    She seems to operate on two brain cells. Did someone genuinely pay her for this? The funny thing is that you know she had to think hard to turn the obvious things into some nonsense. She is so smug about putting everyone in a political box too. This is stupidity pretending to be revolutionary. Just disastrous.

    Interesting lecture. I understand the pinciples discussed but admit I am confused why the term "political ecology" is used, in the literature it gets confused with conventional ecological work with a political lens. Would something like "subversive ecology" not be more appropriate? Also cannot hear the student questions, can the lecturer repeat them in the fututre as he/she will have a microphone.

    Thought provoking discussion. I will need to read the book to get the full scope of the arguments being forwarded. To build on some points made, I think it is important that we critique the "consumption driven economic growth" paradigm irregardless of whether it emanates from neo-classical capitalist or state-sponsored capitalist (communism as we've seen it so far) economics. The idea that all consumption is valid regardless of the destruction it unleashes on communities and ecosystems is fundamentally wrong and ultimately suicidal. The concept of "throw away culture" is actually a recent phenomenon that began to gain traction only in the 1950s and became global by the 1980s. Prior to the throw away mindset was the old wisdom of "a stitch in time saves nine", "waste not want not" etc. With the emergence of the "throw away culture" came built in obsolescence, market segmentation and incessant marketing that no longer had anything to do with meeting our "needs" but more to do with creating "wants". And these wants need to be pursued even if it leads to the end of the planet because that is what fuels economic growth measured by GDP. One could make the argument that since the throw away culture is a recent phenomenon, that we could actually undo it through the renewal of old values, promotion of new ecocentric values and adoption of significant regulation in sectors that are most polluting. Maybe this could be the entry point for discussing "degrowth" or "economic contraction".

    Sorry, I'm just not buying it. There are some good points here, but New York is not a natural environment, and that has nothing to do with political position. The city requires massive inputs of human resources to maintain its configuration: natural environments don't. That is essentially the difference, and waving it away by calling human activity "natural" is pointless tautology.

    • @MarthaNt
      @MarthaNt 8 років тому

      Well, that's why countries have their own governments. I mean, in a place like Greece there should and could be an ecological related government..But in more industrial places, you are right, it doesn't seem like it would be right. Although nature should always be a priority, in my opinion.

    • @Liliquan
      @Liliquan 3 роки тому

      You clearly have no understanding of nature. Nothing escapes nature. Ecology doesn’t just stop at the boarders of a city and say “Well, looks there’s no nature here, I best get the hell out”. Furthermore, human activity doesn’t stop at the boarders of the city. People get most of their resources from outside the cities in order to maintain the luxuries of the city. Furthermore, yet again, nature does need huge amounts of resources to function, hence why the non-sustainable use of resources by humans have direct and negative effects on the standard functions of nature. Political ecology is for people just like you. People who live in a fantasy world and have no comprehension how much their lifestyle have negatively affected nature.

    Who decides what constitutes a good urban environment?, you ask. The market decides. People and businesses "vote with their wallets".

    • @veronicaspeedwell7530
      @veronicaspeedwell7530 8 років тому

      +Operacion Libertad Venezuela The market does not decide what is a "good" urban environment; the market decides what people like in the short term. Markets can ignore all kinds of things that make an environment quantifiably "good", and far more necessary than the shiny baubles that the free market serves up. There are all kinds of things that have proven resistant to market valuation. For instance, the US had to pass major regulation to correct the market's failure to provide clean air and water; two things that I think we can all agree qualify as "good" by any measure...except the free market, apparently. I live for the day when this cult of the free market finally crumbles to the ground under the weight of its own patent absurdity.

    • @Liliquan
      @Liliquan 3 роки тому

      @@veronicaspeedwell7530 The hilarious but sad reality is that their so called free market is not even close to being free and yet still causes ridiculous levels of damage. If the market were truly free, we would all be dead.
