You may be able to get an idea of how badly the rubber on the tires has aged, by looking at the rubber. On older rubber you can often see little cracks in the rubber.
@@soilmanted great point. Thanks for sharing. 👍
For what little it is worth, I would strongly advise never taking an older Corvette to a Chevy dealership. Despite the fact that the dealership really did not have any involvement in this accident, in general I expect true Corvette specialist shops to be much more experienced with and knowledgeable of our C5s. Also, tire specialist shops either already know how to handle these cars or can be shown where the lift points and lift pucks are located. They sell orders of magnitude more tires than do auto dealerships.
@@CorkVanDenHandel some good advice! 👍
I got a car from mom when she stopped driving at 89 yrs old, the tires looked perfect as my mom didn't drive much after my dad passed, but the tires were probably 10 to 12 years old, ended up giving the car to my daughter, she had a tire come apart and spun out on the freeway, no one was hurt but was a wake up call for me to always check tire dates and replace when they are 6 to 8 years old no matter how good the tread looks.
@@kevinjackson2361 glad your daughter is ok. Old tires can be very dangerous
This is real stingy old man. 😂. Hate such man in life. Selfish till rot..
Replaced my 2000 C 5 tires at year 24. Original with 23k. Still looked great and good tread. Knew I was going take a 1000 mile trip. Old ones did get awfully noisy! TPS still worked!
@@gordy5882 wow 24 and I thought mine were old. 👍
The C5 Z06 came with a can of tire snot and an air compressor. When is the last time you got a puncture in a modern tire? If you are that worried about flats get a AAA card. That way when you fall in a pothole at highway speed and blow the tire and break or bend the wheel you will know who to call.
@@GregoryDauterman I got a flat about 18 months ago on my daily. Changed it myself in about 20 min. We also got one in my wife’s car which has run flats. Just drove it to the tire repair shop and didn’t miss a beat. 👍
I got a puncture in a modern tire, about 2 years ago, in my Pirelli tire that was only about 4 years away from date of manufacture. Screw screwed itself into the tire. I carry a 12 volt compressor in my car and If it were a slow leak I would have used it to fill up the tire to about 2 or 3 psi past the recommended psi, and driven to the tire dealer. However it was a fast leak. Air would have all leaked out by time I reached the dealer where I had bought the tire, about 4 miles away. So I loosened the lug nuts, jacked up the affected wheel, replaced the tire with the compact spare, and drove to the dealer with the punctured tire. They dipped the tire in a water bath to find any and all punctures, patched the single puncture that they found, from inside, put the tire back on the rim, balanced it, and put the tire back on the car for me. No charge for this. If I didn't have the tools and skills to jack up a car and change a wheel, I would have called a mechanic to do it for me. With only one flat in 6 years, this would have been more cost-effective than having an annual contract with AAA.
How Dangerous are 20 year old runflats with great thread still left ? I would think there is no chance for them to Blowing Out. Obviously the tires are Hard and will not give a good ride or traction ...
@@ScarlettFire341 I’m not sure. I know the manufacturers want them replaced before then. If you do a lot of driving especially at highway speed it might be better to be safe than sorry. IMO. 👍

@@muhammadaazm wow from India. Cool. I have several friends from India. Thanks for checking out the video. 👍
Annoying and disappointing that this would happen while in the dealer's care, but not their fault at all. Good on them, in fact, for digging through their camera footage to help you out. This kind of crap happens a lot at dealerships and shops. Like, a _lot_. So much so that any time I get tires, I take the wheels off the car at home and bring them in loose... I don't need anyone touching my car more than is needed, which is never because I do all my own repairs. Have had problems in the past with joyriding, dirt left in the interior, etc etc etc that I just don't want the car in there.
@@runner3033 good advice on taking the wheels off and bringing them in. Thanks for checking out the video. 👍
My condolences. It sucks to have ones special car damaged regardless of the severity of the damage. Thankfully the damage is not servere and can be repaired several ways. Now, what in hell made you think dealerships were trustworty?
@@ScatPackRob lol I should have know better than to trust the dealer. 👍
When my vette tires turn FIVE years old, I can mash the gas in 4th @ 20mph and the tires spin up to rev limiter immediately. I burn them off long before that now.
@@RobFRC that’s the fun way to do it. 👍
Hi George. Are those the stock seats in your C5? 🙏
@@raymondshartrand2417 yup stock seats. I think they were optional back in 1999. The base seats were a bit different if I’m remembering right. Thanks for checking out the video. 👍
Audibly laughed when I saw the camera footage after the guy claimed he “didn’t realize he hit the car” when he dragged the thing half way out of the parking spot. The dealership situation is unfortunate but not surprising, the guy who hit the car had nothing to do with them so it shouldn’t be on them to fix it. Hopefully they will be more mindful on the placement of future customer cars so this kind of situation doesn’t happen again. As far as I can tell you did nothing wrong in your handling of the situation as anyone would be frustrated and disappointed about something like this happening, especially since you’re already having to put a lot of trust in someone to handle your car without you present, and in this case the (almost) worst case scenario happened. Hopefully she’ll be good as new and you won’t have to deal with this again
@@calebewell5535 thanks for checking out the video and the feedback. I got the car back and it’s better than before the accident. Managed to get a good used fender. 👍
You are overreacting and then some - this is an old C5, you can get those fenders for nearly nothing - so many available - they around $300 all over eBay or pretty much any junkyard. Grab your 5K and say thank you twice. This whole repair would cost less than 1500. BTW, you don't have to replace the fender - it can be fixed - it's just fiberglass. They fix them the same way they fix bumpers.
@@project911 overreacting? I didn’t fly off the handle or yell at anyone. I’m just disappointed it happened and the dealership didn’t seem too bothered by it?
@@georgeoncars663 Why would you be surprised.... thy just didn't want to take a hit on their insurance and instead shifter responsibility to the guy who actually damaged your car + they gave you a discount + you are getting paid for this situation. If it was a collector car, I would understand, but you are getting covered and then some - I wouldn't complain too much.
Why would the dealership do anything? It was extremely nice for them to give you a discount, but if you feel like they should have done something differently, you're crazy.
@@C5ZDad what they should have done is taken better care of my car and parked it in a less busy area like the GM dealership I use now does. How about a ride home from the dealership. As for the discount I had to ask for it. A small token considering the lost resale value due to having an accident on the carfax. You must work at a dealership. lol.
@georgeoncars663 dumb complaint. What if they parked it in the back of the lot and it got hit; you'd still be complaining. I don't work at a dealership; I'm not a Karen. Shit happens and it wasn't their fault. I'll be sure to blame you when I park in front of your house and a random person hits me.
Corvette guys think there old junk is priceless.
@georgeoncars663 it an old vette, not worth much. Could get hit anywhere. Not the dealers fault. Maybe you should wait in the car.lol vette guys.
@ so you don’t know the difference between valuable and expensive. lol.
I think you handled it well George for I would have been locked and loaded. Since the fender is fiberglass is there a way you can have the body shop repair it?
Thanks for checking out the video. They offered to repair it, but I wanted a new one (or light used one). Managed to find a nice used one in Ohio so it worked out great.
You went to Reaume's????
Yup. The only problem I have with them was I think they should park the Vette's and Cadillac's separately near the back. I was hoping they'd be a bit more careful with where they parked my car. Other than that they were ok.
Good to see more content...
Thanks. Hope you guys are all doing well.
Any body shop can fiberglass that damage. I did fiberglass repair on a plane wing back in high school that was worse than that. You should be able to pay a shop about $1500 to repair and paint and you can pocket the rest.
@@SKRooU2 I know you’re right, but I wanted a new (or lightly used) fender. Managed to get a good used one. Repair is done and car looks better than before the accident. Thanks for checking out the video. 👍
The entire situation is a bummer…thankfully the dealership had video of the accident. Given the facts I agree with the dealerships position…ultimately they are not at fault as long as the trucks insurance makes you whole. It’s disappointing that GM has made most C5 parts obsolete…given that it’s the flag ship and they sold over 250k C5’s…hopefully you get your car sorted and looking good as new.
@@TheBBodyBuilder thanks for checking out the video. Car is back and the body shop did a good job with the repair. I managed to find a used fender so it worked out. 👍
GM is becoming very disappointing, can not keep in stock of parts for their flag ship.
@@tomk6698 Totally agree. I could only find 2 fenders in the entire US and Canada and they wouldn’t ship them to me. I got lucky and found one second hand. Thanks for checking out the video. 👍

I just bought my 5th gen 4runner! The many videos of the 4runners don’t do any justice until you actually go to a dealership and test drive one. The tech is outdated but it does the job. Fuel economy is not great but I rather pay at the pump than have to visit my dealership for mechanical issues. The engine is the best part of this vehicle! The old school V6 is so smooth and reliable. I cant say anything about the new turbo engines of the new SUV but i would say newer things tend to be bugged and need rework throughout its first few years of release. Resale value of these 5th gen are insane! Good vid tho!
