Golos Nari
Golos Nari = the Spirit of the Nara river where Napoleon was defeated was my first little composition on my self built zhaleiki. When our accordionist suddenly pulled out of the invitation to compete in Sevastopol we went from the super difficult classic Bumblebee to the super simple heartfelt Golos Nari ...and we won first prize - thank you Russia we had an unforgettable time.

A few years back I had several of my dear friends from around the world dying and got into a pretty 'low orbit'. There was so much left unsaid - but gradually a tune and the words I had wanted to say condensed in my head and I sketched both down. Having a folk singer and poet like Kostia as a friend, I handed him my English draft plus the tune and he created a Russian masterpiece (..by the reac...

Svetit Mesyats Tschaika Cossacks 1971
Переглядів 2 тис.Рік тому
"Svetit Mesyats" (Brightly shines the moon, La lune brille, Mondschein) is the most played balalaika piece. It is always played in D-Major so everybody can join in and create their own variations. The Tschaika Cossacks of 1971 were Dieter Hauptmann (DE), Pyotr Bondarenko (DE/UA), Sasha Vlassov (BG/GR), and Jeff Stover (US).
Chiribim Chiribom

"Chiribim, Chiribom" has its origin in Bessarabia where Moishe Oysher, who first recorded it in 1931, grew up. Pyotr's friend the late Pavel Rodionoff wrote the Russian language lyrics for him in about 1969 because the Cossacks felt it was not appropriate to sing in the original Yiddish. Pyotr Bondarenko made that famous song his own.

"The Legend about 12 Robbers" (La Légende des douze brigands, Die Legende von den 12 Räubern) is one of the most famous and ancient of Russian folk songs. This recording was made by Radio Télévision Suisse (RTS) in Geneva in 1971. Our Tschaika Cossacks at their best! Merci beaucoup RTS!

I call it my Balmoral Tartan Jacket because from what I can tell it is exactly the pattern which Prince Albert designed in the 19th Century. It has been part of my life for a long time. I wonder if the experts have something to say?
International Day of the Balalaika 2022 Polka Belorus
Переглядів 2232 роки тому
I first heard this little theme in 1965 played by Andrei Popovkin in Frankfurt/Germany and played it ever since. Is it really from Belorus? I have no idea. It just sits nicely on the balalaika and is good fun for beginners and for players like Ally and myself as we slowly reach our 'use by' date. Next year we'll be 160 years together - is it time to stop?

      This group existed from 1970 to 1972. Dieter Hauptmann had led the accompanists for Iwan Rebroff from 1965 to 1969. Then Iwan moved up in his career, got bigger fees and the instrumentalists stayed on ground level. So they split. Sascha, the bass, originally from Bulgaria, joined them in 1970 when one other left to pursue a career in guitar building. He could not take certain vaccinations, a hindrance in touring. Then we had the ideal group for this work. But unfortunately the American Jeff was after a solo career back in the States and Sascha thought he could be singing solo in the Milan Opera. We continued for another 5 years but the magic was no longer there. Sascha then accompanied Rebroff and others, joining Volga Cossacks and changed his name, too. Jeff had some normal job in the US, climbing towers but I did not understand that. Piotr stayed with us until 1975 when he had an accident which left him with a medical condition that he could no longer fly in small planes. Dieter accompanied Vicky Leandros and Mireille Matthieu in TV shows. He wrote a number of songs but when he could not sell them, we decided that our time in Germany was up and we moved to Australia. That group was a golden moment in time, but the gods were not kind to it. They cut a record with teldec, but they never promoted it.

      He did, but the other ingredients he did not have. He needed more sleep than others. I had also seen with my aunt (a not successful Wagnerian Alto) and Iwan Rebroff (while he was still at the opera) that you need an enormous amount of discipline to go through all the training and then learning the roles. Rehearsals during the day, performance at night. In my mind then, in 1972, he did not have all the other ingredients and time proved me right. It was a great pity for everyone involved.

    You know, it's weird but that Jeff dude on the bass balalaika looks remarkably like a younger version of a guy that I've known my entire life named JF. What's even wilder is that they even share the same last name, Stover! I spose it's just one of those weird, wacky coincidences though, as I could never see him doing something like this. Still, pretty cool nonetheless.

      @@hauptmannbalalaika Nah, I can't see it. The Jeff in this video looks like he knows his way around a balalaika or two, while the JF I know has always been more of a banjo guy.

    • @hauptmannbalalaika
      @hauptmannbalalaika Рік тому

      My husband Dieter played banjo before being turned to balalaika by a Don Cossacks' son. You are opening a mystery box. "Our" Jeff had indeed a capital F in his name but I never knew what it stood for. If he had played banjo, I might have gotten to know in the years I knew him. We might be looking at a Doppelgänger situation.
