On LS engines when we do a the Gagetman Groove throttle body mod (a simple groove cut behind the throttle body) we always have to wrap the headers up to the cat because the engine runs a lot cooler. On modern engines, the post cat O2 sensor reads the temperature of the exhaust and if it cooler (often because of improvements in combustion efficiency) the ecu will assume you are running too lean and dump more fuel into the engine. Try wrapping your exhaust up to the cat before you abandon this project.

The O2 sensor after the cat will detect that your engine is running cooler. Thus, it sends a signal to your ECU that interprets that you are running rich. Try wrapping your headers and exhaust pipe up to the cat. This will keep the heat in the pipe and the computer may allow you to get better fuel economy. (Cheaper than expensive ceramic coatings). This trick was introduced to me over at the Gagetman Groove forum.

My God, here I was almost thinking that the heater core was going to have to come out on my 5.3 L. Silverado 2000 with this exact problem?! So those connections that are taken off are they available at a parts store such as AutoZone? THANK YOU!

What a stupid design

On fuel injected vehicles you would have to run an aftermarket ecu that would allow fuel injection trim to be remapped based on the temperature of fuel being injected. If you leave stock ecu tune then it wont do anything since ecu is having injectors open and close at a pre determined intervals regardless of how flammable the fuel is and by warming it up you're probably increasing the fuel pressure going into the intake so would burn a bit more fuel without the re-map. You can get engine nice and hot then take it to a dyno and lean out the fuel until you start seeing problems and it should be able to lean out quite a bit but then car will run poor on startup when vehicle is cold unless you wire in a sensor to monitor hot side of fuel heater and imput those readings back into the loop to properly adjust fuel trim

Thanks brother but mine is like yours the quick connect broke but I need to know how to use the tool I'm thinking I'll have to completely separate the little plastic quick disconnect tool in order to get the disconnect thing upon the thing(the old heater quick disconnect) sticking out of my truck . I'll let you know how it goes .

Just a bit of silicone spray, not oil, grease or mineral oil, that deteriorates the o ring. Will help the fitting slide on. And put the hose onto the fitting before sliding it on the heater core tubes will be much easier.

The reason why it doesn't work is because the computer is trying to over compensate for the change in leaner emissions!! Put an o2 sensor spacer distancer on both before cat on both side manifold! Then one after catalytic converter and it will work!!

I used 2 different tools and never got it to go inside the connector. I never got it off and gave up. Mine was a 2013 Duramax though- way less room to work.

My left line is leaking, the right one is not. Do you recommend that I replace them both at the same time for good measure or leave the right one alone?

I so happened to remove mine. One came off pretty easily with either a plastic one like shown in the video or a long metal one that came with the same kit. However, the other one was giving me a fit until I got one from Advance Auto Parts that looked similar to the white plastic part, but was made out of metal. It's 3/4", probably made of aluminum but has a copper colored finish. I felt that it was well worth the investment. Also, the acces is tight and can be a bit difficult to reash as well, making it a bit difficult to gain access with a larger tool and the plastic one that I used didn't have a nice spring action to help keep it close and made it easier to accidentally drop while attempting to fit it around the connector.

This is exactly what I needed thank you! I'm coming home from work tonight, stopping for 20 minutes every mile to cool it down. It's after hours so I can't get the parts right now. This 30 minute drive has taken me 3 hours so far and I still have a couple miles to go. Glad I found this during one of my breaks.

I am so glad I found your video. I've been without heat in my 2002 Avalanche for almost 2 years because I was quoted $900 to change out my heater core, or I completely remove the dash myself and change it out. After I saw this, I had heat in less than 10 minutes. Thank you!
