Just a quick look at the requirements for welding "tight" boundaries on naval ships. Air tight, water tight and fume tight all require a single pass of weld and no pinholes. Oil tight require two layers of weld and two passes showing and of course, no holes. This is the proper way to weld these leak proof boundaries.

An overview of fillet weld break tests at Bath Tech. Students perform the same break tests that are required at naval shipyards like Bath Iron Works. These tests show weld penetration and the quality of restarts. Additionally, this method is used to determine the weldability of primers or other coatings. Also covered is how the hobby welder can test welds at home.
