A child's voice from a hosting centre
The video is on Rida, a 10-year-old boy from South Lebanon. He has lived with his mother’s family since his parents' divorce when he was two. A month ago, heavy shelling forced them to flee their home. “When a shell hit near our house, I was thrown to the ground and my arm started bleeding. It felt awful!” he recalled. A few days later, he saw his house collapse on TV. “It was heartbreaking to see my home, where I grew up, disappear,” he said.
The family first went to Faraya, but they couldn’t find their house. Rida recognized their destroyed home, and they all cried. With no other options, they decided to flee to Syria, traveling for 24 hours before crossing the border.
Now, living in the Herjaleh host centre with his extended family, Rida and his mother share a small two-room apartment with his grandparents. Though they arrived with nothing but the clothes on their backs, Rida participates in UNICEF-supported activities at the centre, which helps him forget his sadness for a while. Rida also visited a UNICEF-supported health clinic at the centre for an earache and received needed treatment.
Despite the hardships, he dreams of rebuilding a home one day. “I lived in my house for a long time. I want to rebuild it, even better than before,” he concluded.
