🐝 ALL THINGS BEEKEEPING 🐝
My name is Ryan, im a Husband and father to 3 beautiful girls. My full time job is a Lineman. In my spare time, a Southern Maryland beekeeper. I have kept bees since 2011 with the help from my dad. I have and still make mistakes, I will show the good and the bad! I manage around 50 colonies and plan to expand in the near future. I am no master beekeeper nor an expert. I love how challenging but rewarding beekeeping is. My goal is to spread information to all skill levels and the importance of the honey bee. Please like and subscribe and follow me on this journey!

Checking a small nuc 5 over 5 at my property. I was curious if the queen picked back up laying after the cold snap in ocotober. Watch to find out!

I’ve been going around and adding a second 5 frame box to my summer splits. I do this after they have a brood cycle hatch. I love to put these 5 over 5 nucs through the winter here in Maryland. It works for me and there is just something about this space and size of hive to me that works. Every spring these nucs are booming and ready for the flow! Thank you

Nice ..Love some Honey..They all gotta eat too
@@Kls1972sm that’s right !
Nice setup. I've just put ten pounds of sugar on newspaper with slits in it. Works well. Any reason to put the air vent in the rear?
Honestly I just put a very small vent in the top rear to have some minor air flow in the front and out the back top. Really no reason other than some very small ventilation ! Thanks for the watch btw
Great information. Appreciate it
Glad you found it useful!
I Do the same thing here in S. C. If bees dont need it they will bring it out the door when i put it on too early.
Yeah I agree to early they just eat most of it
I guess its not easy to make fondant for all of these hives so this way is not bad too and does the same purpose, your bees looking great by the way
Thank you! And yes I used to use hive alive fondant but have 40+ hives got a little pricey. I still love the hive alive product lines and bees seem to love it also! Hope your bees look good as well.
Your bees look good. You should have a great winter. You're doing something right. Thanks for the video.
Thanks Russ !
Takeoff haha right around the corner
Awwl, the girls made an appearance, lol!!! Do you have any trouble with Nucs like that overheating? I have a few but was scared to use them 😊
@@TanyardFarm of course they did! And this is my favorite way to winter here I prefer this over most
@PeabodysApiary Thanks I'll have to do some experiments next year with some late splits
Bees are looking good
@@justinlee9244 thanks big dog
Looking forward to your 2025 videos.
@@keithgagnon7989 thanks Keith! Can’t wait
Nice pig.😁
@@dcsblessedbees I take it you like bacon hahaha
Looking good for sure. Nice little nuc that is ready to explode come spring. Thanks for the video. Your video is really getting better. Nice to hear you talk and explain things. Can't wait until next spring.
Thanks I really appreciate that!
Ryan. Tell me about that jacket. Where did you buy it and what does the tag say? Do you like it? Thanks!
Foxhound bee company. I do like the jacket a lot just recently got it, I will let you know come July haha when it’s real hot! Thanks for the watch Brad.
@@PeabodysApiary I bought the same jacket from Fox Hound but your jacket has a different logo on it. I was just wondering what that logo is. I really like my FH jacket but I don't wear it much so it's still in perfect condition.
@@ThatBeeManI think that logo is the sting stopper logo … I think. Not 100% sure
You ever work your bees without heavy duty gloves?
@@kendallrouse44 no I always wear gloves
Well that's no fun, we all make mistakes at times, worst case they are still resources that can be joined to another colony.
That’s right Dc just wanted to show new beekeepers it’s not always perfect we both know that
If this was April it might be worth trying to get them going but late August - Sept. you are right. How will they put up their winter stores in the next 5 weeks? Maybe if you run across a queenless hive this week you could drop her in.
@@russellkoopman3004 that’s exactly right, what I have now is what I got. Time to feed for winter
4:14 It happened to me! Thanks for sharing this side of beekeeping 😎🐝☀️
@@sarashappyhives1828 it’s not always perfect ! Love the challenges
Looking good
@@justinlee9244 thanks
That is a nice strong nuc. Now to get some winter stores in that hive.
That’s right !
I've done 4 over 4 in 10 frame boxes like Mike Palmer but decided that I wanted to go to 5 over 5 due my management. I move them to different yards so less weight is desirable. I've also done 8 frame and 10 frame singles and had success overwitering with them also but small clusters are better off in 2 stories.
@@dougpeterson5257 I 100% agree with this
splits in Augusts ? where you from?
@@pabeekeper yes split that were made from grafted cells back in late June . Location is Maryland
Great setup
Great looking bees
@@KajunHomestead thanks!
Replace the queen and drop in a frame of capped brood?
@@MinnesotaBeekeeper yes sir already got rid of her, introduced one of my grafted queens. Swarm queens can be hit or miss like this, so they go to the resource yard.
@@PeabodysApiary Nice.
👍👍👍
I've had good luck here in MN overwintering double 5 frame nucs. I prefer double 6's but I don't have enough of them yet.
@@russellkoopman3004 I love running these in the winter. Just something about this set up the bees like in my own experience
Fun days.😁

@@sarashappyhives1828 thank you this was back in June
Very cool!
Great videos, Ryan! In the hives with the gallon buckets with sugar water...do you drill small holes for the sugar water to drip out? I have all pierco inhive feeders which are super economical and I don't mind losing the brood space in my hives as most are pretty young but as they mature will likely want them to have that space for brood.
@@AbundanceFarmandApiary yes I drill small holes in buckets. Cost about 3.50 per feeder with no drowning, also no need to open hive just fill bucket back up without touching lid. I need all 10 frames when running singles is another reason.
@@PeabodysApiary I was wondering if that is why you don't use the frame feeders! Since my oldest hives are only 14 or so months old I am constantly feeding them. lol. I can see how this time next year the buckets will be better as they will have it all drawn out. My OG hives are almost ready for that step!! yay!
@@AbundanceFarmandApiary I can tell you when I switched from frame feeders to buckets it made feeding a whole lot easier. Also cleaning the frame feeders took a long time. The buckets I just use a drill brush attachment and dawn at the end of season and then stack buckets away till next year takes no time !
😎🐝☀️
Looking good. I like that frame of eggs put into doubtful queen right hives.
Do the washed bees die? 😢
@@adamp.2517 yes unfortunately, but we wash to check for bigger issues that we can solve and act on now. To save the colony and its future.
I wonder if she has enough drawn comb to lay
Пчеловод который смотрит в улей только тогда,когда нужно отобрать мёд
I always put in all frames to not get burr cone, they will follow lay out of empty frames,,
😎 🐝☀️
I have heard alot of People say to always replace a swarm catch queen before winter, just to make sure they have a better shot at making winter.
@@KajunHomestead I agree! I need to take better notes at this yard during the flow I get lost in time hahaha
I am doing my first mite washes soon and I am worried I’m going to wash the queen lol. Good job on finding yours before she got washed. Will also be using apigaurd myself.
@@Tinycreekbeecompany I always double check but yes that is the scary part 😬
I am finishing up my second round of Apiguard treatment myself. Hope I get similar results.
@@keithgagnon7989 I’m glad I tried it this year. I will be adding this treatment into my mite management tools going forward. I hope it works for you also!
also, can you drop a link for the feeding hole plugs? I did something similar for my chicken waterers to allow for quick and easy cleanout and wished I had sourced the plugs before I cut the holes as it was more difficult than I anticipated to get the correct size!

@@AbundanceFarmandApiary the plugs work great !
Great video! I love the feeding setup and plan to do something similar with my spring split group.
Some say regional or local queens are best. I think the commercial queen raisers are doing a poor job of raising queens. There is no accountability there. I had the same luck with my Caucasian queens which I think came out of Cali?? If I was a sideliner I'd never buy queens from the big producers.
@@russellkoopman3004 I agree Russ. No more for me all local stock next year.
My opinion, regionally grown queens tend to have the advantage. I Believe that out of region Queens can be fine but they have to acclimate to the new region, plus you add in possible shipping issues. Blessed Days...
I agree with all of this !
