SPELLING TO COMMUNICATE: Miracle Autism Therapy or Fraud?
Spelling to Communicate also known as S2C is a hot topic right now since the release and recent popularity of the Documercial movie called Spellers and the widely publicized Valedictorian speech of S2C user Elizabeth Bonkers. So what is S2C? Spelling to Communicate is a therapy that teaches non speaking or unreliably speaking autistics to communicate by pointing to letters on a letterboard and spelling what they want to say. The board is held for them by a communication partner. Advocates for Spelling to Communicate make claims such as "I can get anyone to spell for me" and "Autism isn't a neurodevelopmental disorder it's a motor skill issue"
Opponents of Spelling to Communicate say the therapy is just Facilitated Communication or Rapid Prompt method repacked. FC and RPM have been widely criticized as a pseudoscience. The biggest concern is whether or not the messages being relayed are from the person spelling or the facilitator. Despite the lack of evidence based studies the method still brings about some powerful and emotional testimonies from parents and nonverbal autistics alike.
This is my first dive into Spelling to Communicate and my initial reactions to the controversial strategy. While I never want to invalid anyone's method of communication I do have some concerns and a lot of questions.
Have you tried Spelling to Communicate with your loved one? Have you heard of it and what are your thoughts?
Whether you're a parent of a child with autism, a caregiver, or someone seeking to learn more about this remarkable community, this vlog is an opportunity to connect, inspire, and foster a sense of unity in our collective pursuit of inclusivity and acceptance.

Autism therapy vlog! Our girl has been working so hard in therapy and at school to learn social skills and become more engaged with others. I wanted to have this therapy session in a public place to gather whether or not that type of engagement and play would translate translate from the classroom into a real life every day setting. The results were sorta surprising and sorta not. Regardless it...

I am a nanny and i think i am taking care of an Autism child i told the mommy but she's delaying i am scared
Has anyone else tried holistic treatments for autism? Dr. Oyalo approach has been a game-changer for us. My lil girl is now more engaged, less hyperactiveness and much more improved in speaking and responding to us.
its so nice to see other children who are exactly like mine!! its just nice to see we got lot of verbal high functioning autistic kids aorund here where we are and hardly any that are non verbal and properly autistic like our daughter so this is nice to see feels like I am right at home listening to these sounds lol
Thanks to Dr. Oyalo, I finally feel like I’m in control of my thyroid health. His effective treatment and ongoing support have been crucial.
OMG meltdowns are sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo baaaaaaaaaad. I dread getting a job because they aren’t going to hire a man who has meltdowns over the slightest things.
I love this channel. I’m 27 but exhibit some of this behavior. I speak, so my form of stimming is saying words over and over again. Like if I’m really happy, I might yell Jeremy! Jeremy is the name of my reborn baby doll given to me by my friend Harley, another name I like to say all the time.. I also like to say words that sound good together like Kelly’s kettle for example. I try to channel it though because people in public don’t need to hear my happiness to play with a white furby or hear me yell Shayna.
I’m so grateful for finding Dr Oyalo . Her holistic methods, including herbal medicine and a special diet, have really helped my daughter with her sleep issues and hyperactivity.
…this
My son stop stimming and covering ears in 10 days, he still overcoming symptoms but he's 60 percent improved in speech and social skills with help of Dr Oyalo herbal supplements

I often think the same, who will care for my grandson the way he needs to be cared for. Im the only one who understands him at three since his parents dont want to accept his Autism. It hurts. But you're doing great and just believe in your higher power 🙏itll work out in your favor
One day at a time mama, youre wonderful and so is Leah❤🎉
❤❤❤❤
My three year old grandson does exactly the same thing😊. As soon as his feet hit the floor in the morning, its off to the races. My son is in denial that he needs to be evaluated and tested. But im his full time caregiver 24 hours a day, so i watch his behavior, i nitice EVERYTHING but my son doesnt like the fact that i know and he gets mad at me when i try to talk to him about seeing a doctor
Thankful for mothers like you who put the signs of autism out there for others to see… I am a great grandma concerned for my great grandchild. This has been most helpful. Thank you.

You don't understand ONE THING about what DIR Floortime is. Seriously.. do better to even understand what the duck you're doing.
I really needed this today.. it's so easy to get overwhelmed with the lack of information they are capable of giving but if we keep pushing, it is always worth it.❤
It is real
Am I the only person that think that most of this Is normal for a two year old ,besides the speech part. Probably should sit down and actually talk real words to her
There are a lot of children labeled autistic today. The government does give financial help to families with austistic children if they fit within their guidelines. I wonder about that sometimes? Once there is a diagnosis the money starts coming in. Our money, the taxpayers. Everything shown in this video I've seen in all toddlers. Makes me wonder about validity? I saw a family on here with four autistic children. I would have thought good idea to stop at two.
I get zero government cash for this and in fact had to leave my successful career to stay home and care for her. Severe autism is a SIGNIFICANT disability and isn’t diagnosed out of nowhere. This video was years ago and she’s very much still autistic today, developmentally delayed and requires speech therapy, occupational therapy and behavioural therapy as well as a level of supervision that goes well above normal. Most families struggle to access any therapy funding or programs and depending on location none may be available at all. Waitlists are years long and many of our kids will never be able to live independently. This life is hard. It’s not a money train it’s a money DRAIN. Your comment is not only wrong but insulting and misinformed.
5:12 she wants to play the same game she played at 1:23, in my opinion.
Special educator here. You will face challenges BUT you can do this. I’ve worked with autistic children since 1971 and have had some wonderful experiences. Observing how it is they adapt and process information, witnessing the hidden intelligence and the joy they can bring has been eye-opening. I send prayers and encouragement to both of you. Enjoy your little girl. Love her. Create great memories together.
New sub here❤
welcome!! big update coming soon!
The board should be stationary and not held to voice facilitator influence. Kids can learn to spell and write and type without physical manipulation by anyone. I hope that there isn't an avalanche of sexual abuse allegations made through this as they were through facilitated communication. I saw wonderful parents who were completely innocent accused of sexually abusing their kids.
My daughters is more of a scream.
Lol I'm right there with you about my son who's 4yrs
This is so beautifully and acurately put x
I saw your video and cried alot ..... I have autistic brother...iam from india ,he is an introvert and 35yrs old.I have three boys who loves him so much and also understands what autism is all about. ...but the sad part is my bro n law's (husband's younger brother) son is hyper active and i noticed that he did have the signs of autism when he was 9 months....the first thing was not responding or reacting to his name when its been called around 10 to 15 times.....i was in doubt but still knew many things about autism and tried to watch the child closely.... I noticed every single signs related autism because he was so hyperactive and wasn't acting normal at all.....when i mentioned this to my kids they understood....but my husband couldn't....😢i kept crying and directly went to the childs mom and said that she need to consult a Doctor...she refused...and said tht her child is normal

My son is soon 19 and recently began communicating via spelling to communicate! He is nonspeaking and has used augementative communication since he was in kindergarten with increasing success but we were still limited to his requests about food choices, where he wants to go, and a couple of feelings he expressed (happy, sad). But in just the last week I have discovered he can spell and answer questions about information I have verbally provided but better yet about himself! I have learned his favourite colour is purple and that he can confirm when he has had a seizure when we are sometimes unsure if he had one. He can tell us why he likes certain sensory things like the sound of velcro or that certain shows help him feel calm. It is nothing short of a bonafide miracle and it costs almost nothing and I have learned from books and youtube. It is not smoke and mirrors it is simple and it works.
thats amazing! Thanks so much for sharing!
Hi there, My 4 year old son also does vocal stimming especially when is anxious.. can she repeat words when asked?
She does have some echolalia but not consistently
Thankyou for this video really helpful
Glad it helped!!
I have 28 months baby boy and haven't talking yet ,am stressful really .can you help me .
Try and talk to your doctor to get help;)
My son has hand flapping ... Does he has autism?
Maybe but you would have to seek a professional for help
Thanks family helping familys
In the same boat, it can be so hard but we find ways to communicate. My daughter communicates through expressions and she smiles and laughs more than anything. I imagine it's harder on our children than us. We've got this 🎉
Google Matthew Cramer his family pushed to let him use the letter board at school. He's doing great and even helping his neurotypical classmates
It’s important to understand apraxia/dyspraxia to understand it’s a motor issue. Yes, just like anything anyone learns in the beginning is prompted but those prompts are faded out. It is also a motor hierarchy so the boards change over time while building motor skills. When the motor progresses overtime they can and do type on keyboards or touchscreens to communicate with the end result of independence. Depending on sensory profile some might need a person to say focus, finish your sentence due to distraction with attention etc. However at this stage nobody is holding a board/ keyboard for them or giving any letter prompts. This is actually very different than Facilitated Communication (FC)
There is a autism herbal recommendations I got about #droyalo and his herbal remedy has work perfectly on my sons improvements in speech and social skill and my son fine till now Thank you #droyalo
My grandson was talking then at age two he stopped and then aged five he started again I prayed and asked God please let her know be able to do things he is such a treasure.
That’s love ❤. My twins are autistic and nonverbal it’s definitely a task. But I wouldn’t trade it for the world.
Awe! Sorry I’ve been binging your video 😂🤦🏻♀️ my daughter has pica so sadly she doesn’t play like this yet, but hopefully soon! ❤❤❤
Thank you! 🙏🏻 another thing I don’t like is when people give me dirty looks for having a harness and leash on her! ❤
❤❤❤❤ love you and love her! So beautiful! I love being around people with autism. They are just so real! My daughter is also non verbal! 😊
I was with you till I saw the puzzle piece. Please just use the infinity symbol. The puzzle piece is insulting to autistic folks
There is permanent herbs to improve autism. It’s a medicine you can get from Dr Oyalo UA-cam channel, his herbs have made my son improve perfectly in his speech and social skills.
Since the final taking of your herbs, my son has been speaking well and responding to his name Thank you Dr Oyalo for saving my son with your herbs. I’m so happy to share this news
The facilitator teaches you how to assist your own child. You are not pushed to continue going to a facilitator. Lessons are free online and you can buy the boards. You can actually learn online and not pay anyone. Check out Elizabeth Breen nonverbal valedictorian who set up a nonprofit website to instuct parents to facilitate their own children.
Her name is Elizabeth Bonker and her nonprofit is Communication 4 All.
You're right my bad😊 my son just started and is doing so well I want to see all non verbal people find their voice ❤
That’s fantastic! I’m excited for your son and family the world is about to open up to him!
