SPELLING TO COMMUNICATE: Miracle Autism Therapy or Fraud?
Spelling to Communicate also known as S2C is a hot topic right now since the release and recent popularity of the Documercial movie called Spellers and the widely publicized Valedictorian speech of S2C user Elizabeth Bonkers. So what is S2C? Spelling to Communicate is a therapy that teaches non speaking or unreliably speaking autistics to communicate by pointing to letters on a letterboard and spelling what they want to say. The board is held for them by a communication partner. Advocates for Spelling to Communicate make claims such as "I can get anyone to spell for me" and "Autism isn't a neurodevelopmental disorder it's a motor skill issue"
Opponents of Spelling to Communicate say the therapy is just Facilitated Communication or Rapid Prompt method repacked. FC and RPM have been widely criticized as a pseudoscience. The biggest concern is whether or not the messages being relayed are from the person spelling or the facilitator. Despite the lack of evidence based studies the method still brings about some powerful and emotional testimonies from parents and nonverbal autistics alike.
This is my first dive into Spelling to Communicate and my initial reactions to the controversial strategy. While I never want to invalid anyone's method of communication I do have some concerns and a lot of questions.
Have you tried Spelling to Communicate with your loved one? Have you heard of it and what are your thoughts?

Autism therapy vlog! Our girl has been working so hard in therapy and at school to learn social skills and become more engaged with others. I wanted to have this therapy session in a public place to gather whether or not that type of engagement and play would translate translate from the classroom into a real life every day setting. The results were sorta surprising and sorta not. Regardless it...

My son does the hand flapping and trumpet fingers. He gets overstimulated and hits himself in the head . I feel like he may be but the doctor just keeps saying there’s nothing wrong.

Autism is associated with biological changes that can be measured in the blood. Natural treatments can reverse these changes and improve behavior. I did a video on this research.

So true , brushing teeth , holding tiny objects , putting on clothes , eating by themselves, responding to name , speech and language development etc this are the most easy things a child is able to do but our autistic kids struggle whether its mild or severe they struggle not easy to be an autistic mom 😢

My son is 5 of 6. He also head bangs and does a lot of repetitive or scripted speech. Not always words but repeated sounds. I’m recording it to show his doctor at his next visit to see what he thinks. Thank you for sharing this with us ❤️

This has helped me so much my daughter is nearly 2 and hand stims, bounces on the couch, opens and closes the same cupboard door, eye rolls, sometimes walks on tippy toes and when really upset will go away into a corner and want to be left alone and forces her head back sometimes. I don't know if she is autistic but I believe she could be so I thank you for this

My 2 year old bounces on the couch but she stands.and when I tell her to stop she does stop.i dont think that's our case.shes a late talker because she was born 3 months early preemie, she says some words and other times she whines because she cant say the word. She has perfect eye contact and always interacts with family.she lines up toys randomely but that's just a thing.her pediatrician doesnt seemed worried and neither do i.so I think it's just case by case with some of the similarities.

Just wondering how much screen time did your little one have since she was born? Mine was diagnosed with autism recently and unfortunately had allot of screen time as a one year old. Recent studies these days are finding a link between autism and screen time.

My son does the thing where he also holds his hands up and spreads his fingers. Or holds his flat hand up in front of his face or eyes, as if to say I can't see. He also goes grr grr grr with mouth closed. I have a genuine question, do children eventually talk as adults if these signs are minor? I am so worried about my son not meeting any speech milestones.
