You can only truly give up control, when you master how the body truly works. Ben hogan discovered this. Most people do not.

I also adored and studied Hogan, from 12 y.o., but I had to learn Rotella's advice on my own. I was always trying to hit the perfect shot, to control my motion- it produced tension and disaster. By chance, I swung a driver with oversized grips. My grip pressure went away, and my swing came alive- I could freewheel and hit it as hard as I wanted to- wow!
Good stuff... I’m a student of Buddhism and this is very clear.. you have to give up yourself to discover yourself...
EVERYONE IS DIFFERENT. During an interview with Jim Flick, Jack Nicklaus said he played good golf with a swing thought but that he played great golf with 3 or 4. Flick spent the next 5 minutes trying to re-phrase what Jack said to fit his own teaching philosophy, but Jack just kept saying "no Jim, I played great golf with 3 or 4". The notion that one approach works for everyone is insane. I never won or shot below 66 in a tournament until in my 40s and I credit breaking both of those barriers, multiple times, to that "permission" I got from Nicklaus to have multiple swing thoughts. As much as any other benefit it was a "mitigator" of extreme nervousness that often I felt in competition. As well, I've had students who overcame their own issues and experienced success with multiple, conscious mechanical thoughts. I thought Price and Kite had helped Rotella to understand this.
Only problem is the date in "Five Lessons" is wrong: Hogan's "epiphany" occurred in September 1947, after he discovered the "secret", a mechanical change which allowed him to make a "hook-proof" swing whenever he wanted to (sacrificing a bit of distance, of course, 5 yards or so). That's where his new confidence came from.
no, Jeffy, it was late July '46 at the old Oakhurst Scenic Golf Course in Fort Worth (no longer a course) where he began perfecting the new grip that cured his hook...by mid-August he had it down cold...he tested the local boys at the course to see if they could detect the change, but they couldn't --and he refused to tell them what it was...he did confide to one, though not divulging the change, that it was so successful that he would be better under pressure than playing without any...
@@norrispg Sounds like a tall tale. After the All American Open in Chicago that ended on July 28 (he placed 4th), Hogan's next stop was Canada to do some fishing the week prior to the Winnipeg Open. When he crossed the border on July 31 at Emerson, Manitoba, he was forced to pay import duty on his golf balls. You'll find the story in the newspapers. After winning the Winnipeg event on August 10, Hogan then traveled to Portland, Oregon to prepare for the upcoming PGA championship. The papers reported that he and Sam Snead played practice rounds on August 14. Hogan was the victor on August 25. The following week, Hogan won the Golden State Open at Hillcrest in Los Angeles, California.
