    loved this video! thought you raised some really interesting points - i don't think "not reading" is necessarily a bad thing - depends on what else ppl are doing with their time instead! i'm def gonna check out scavenger's reign! :)

    I read the Burton Raffel translation of Beowulf not too long ago. I liked it. As far as I know Tolkien never intended his translation for publication.

    Good advice. I really have slowed my reading. I was getting burned out. IMO BookTube is a wasteland. TBR, book haul, wrap-up, TBR, book haul, wrap-up, TBR, book haul, wrap-up. It's all the same.

    This book is about the essence if Russia. About its past presentband and future. In the american mindset the world is black and white left or rights, democrat or republican, communist or capitalist. You guys look at the world threw the prism of this binary way of understanding the world. Americans tend to read this book threw the prism of their internal politics. Historically the right demonised socialism while the left defended socialism. Since USSR was by both side considered socialist one side defended it at all cost while the ither blames socialism for all evil. In reality just like George Orwell Kapuscinski was a democratic socialist that hated the USSR. For him USSR was bad because it was authoritarian. The book is not about the USSR but about Russia based on the USSR as the Author draws allot of paralels about Russia never changing. The Tsarist Oprychniks got replaced by the Cheka that morfed into the NKVD and later the KGB and today the FSB. The Tsarist regime sent peoppe to die in the arctic, the Soviets did ot and Putins Fascist regime does it. This book is about Russia about want it was, is and will be if it does not break apart - a colonial Empire. This is the entire premis of the book. When the author travels the USSR most of the regions that he visits were part of Tsarist Russia. The inhabitants of these regions have nothing in common with Russians. Bashkirs, Buriats, Kalmyks, are not Russians theybare people colonised by the Russian Empire. Today the right praises Russia and russia has not changed. It is still the same authoritarian regime.

    Hey there. Recently found your channel among all of the noise on the platform. The algorithm must really be intelligent these days. I recently restarted my reading journey after many years. My very good friend is in a similar boat. Together we have started to read philosophy, and wanted to begin from the very start. But even then there are books on "how to read" to make the most of the "first principles" books. I found your channel due to lobido dominandi review. Your thoughts on that book, but even moreso your thoughts on reading are seriously similar to the conversations me and my friend have been having lately. It would be neat to connect at some point. I feel that you are just us but a few years later in your reading journey. Cheers

    Check out wealthy barber returns for the updated version. Its nothing like the original in the sense that its not a story. But gives some great updated advice. I gift this book for those people in life who just allow finance to stay in that "too hard to think about" section of their mind.

    I just finished this book. I appreciate that you discuss the main themes and the big questions that this book brings up. Over-population and are we humans, in fact just like like the moties? Will we also go through cycles of collapse if we can't colonize other planets? And even then would we just eventually over-populate those planets?... Maybe... remains to be determined .... thanks for a good discussion of this book!

    Good, thoughtful review. I couldn't get into the book when I was 12 or 13. I read Ringworld when I was 12. Loved it. Pournelle's strength was military strategy and politics. Niven is more into hard sci-fi and thinking like aliens. Niven wrote all the scenes with the aliens. When I was more mature I really enjoyed the Mote. The sequel is good and wraps up many ideas presented in the first book.

    When reading the dictionary should I try to memorize all the words on each page or a few??

    • @ReadingAdam
      @ReadingAdam 4 роки тому

      It does help but I find it best to use it when I’m writing something and a word comes to me naturally and then I look the word up to make sure I’m using it properly or find out if there’s a better clearer word to use. So it’s mostly to solidify words you already know instead of always hunting for new words.

    Thank you for sharing. I really enjoyed your review . I brought the book a few years back but only read it through last year , and made a index card system,it took me a while to do it but once completed I found it so helpful because it acts as a all in, reminders to clean but also reminders for the things I don’t clean all the time so I put them in as half year or month etc it made me clean things I tend to put off. But also it’s reminders, like a diary that maybe a birthday is coming or my waterbed needs conditioner or a yearly bill will need comparing before it actually arrives to see if I can get cheaper and not forgotten and I pay the usual amount. Did you make a index card system? I truly recommend it.
