Hospital Emergency Communication Exercise Nov2024
I had the opportunity to participate in an Emergency Communication Exercise with some local hams. I relayed message traffic from the local hospital to my win link node, and then to some hams in Utah. This is a great example of what ham radio can be used for.

Very nice ! We facilitated commnucations with Santa ( 3.916) this year from our Station W3USR . The children were Fascinated and so were the Operators.... LOL Happy New Year de KC3ZDW 73
Yes. In years past we have done that with my kids and my family's kids. It's fun. This was a local project we did last year, but unfortunately couldn't make happen this year.
Yes sir, I did get one. 😃
How is the mast holding up for you? Make a new video of the antennas on? I got this and like it a lot.
Its been goodm i haven't had a chance to make any new videos. Kids, work, life. Lol. I've been hoping to though I want to do an endfed half wave. Then put it up vertical. Might be a dx machine! Lol.
Just got your Antenna calculator and I have question, is there a way to change input dimensions from feet to meters?
Which one? I have one on the website and one in the ham radio toolbox app.
@@kj7iaz Ham Radio Toolbox app, I guess, it doesn't matter. It calculates by numbers
@dogikata yeah the calculator displays both. Then the tuner just has you trim or add by the same as your original input length. So if you use meters, the adjustment is meters, if you use inches, adjustment is in inches. Thanks for supporting the channel!
Howdy, I am older than dirt; I built my antennas back in the 60's!! You make it look so easy!! I worked for Monitoring Times magazine! Thanks I sure hope your family appreciates your expertise; it ain't easy!!
Its definitely easier these days with the flood of information readily available to us. I try to simplify the concepts to encourage people to jump in and try. I like to say, antennas are an exact science that just have to be close to work. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Hi Jeremy - Thank you for the great video! I just subscribed to your channel. I just ordered this mast due to your video. I had a few quick questions for you: 1.) How did you attach your antenna to the actual mast? 2.) The antenna I will use is a ZS6BKW Dipole. Ideally I need to mount the top of the dipole at least 40’ high. I assume this mast will work good for that? It will be a permanent installation. 3.) I will add 4 guys at two different heights. Is your mast still working good for you? 4.) Lastly, I have read some reviews that have stated the pole tends to slide through the camlock clamps on the bottom two sections and people have added a hose clamp at these locations to support the camlock clamps. Have you had to do this? Thank you again! I am planning to watch all of your videos. Dave, AA9GF 3.)
Thanks for the comment . It's been great. 1 it depends on the antenna, I switch antennas alot so I use zipties, or electric tape. 2 it should work great for that. 3 yeah definitely need guys, 4 at 2 height should be good, since you are doing it more permanent, another set so 3 total (or more) would be better. 4 I have seen that. But minimally. I just tighten the cam Locks more and it's fine. You'll be able to tell if it slips, your guys will look loose. Then you can address it, if you don't mind the extra time and effort, the hose clamps are probably helpful.
Very nice... Thanks 73
Thanks!
It's good to have regular emergency communication exercises. Especially for facilities like hospitals.
I agree. Always find a bug or two in practice sessions like this. It's always fun to practice. I should do more of these types of events, but it definitely is hard to find the time some days.
Jeremiah, in Red Lodge. New subscriber! Thanks for posting that Hospital Exercise today! I gotta look into that 73 distro. I haven't messed with Linux in a long time -N7HI
Nice! Yeah it used to be called build a pi, check it out. It's basically a huge script to load a Linux distribution with ham software. Check it out.
Thanks for the spreadsheet. I like dabbling with wire antennas so it will be very helpful. 73
Glad to hear!
Might as well use paper notes, this seems clunky as hell.
Its designed to be a backup, quick solution. A digital version of a paper log.
Tried downloading your antenna/band lengths calculator and nothing working or cant open files.
Hey if you don't mind , email me at kj7iaz@gmail.com. maybe a screenshot or something too. I'll look into it.
Also I just uploaded a new app, and had to reconfirm my account, so maybe it has something to do with it.
@@kj7iaz Thanks anyway would have love to use the format/
It's a great option. Make sure your updated, if you email me I can help you better. Let me know.
@cliftonhead9665 i just realized, are you talking about the spreadsheet from the website? If so email me and I can send it as attachment.
Nice indtructive video. What about running the actual antenna wires to the top?
I have a series on antennas. They hang from this, check them out.
I am HOA restricted mast 20 ft. Now can slope so conceivably trapped as an inverted vee leaning or sloped. Setting 20 trap at 14.0 how narrow will the 40-band width be? Is it going to be either CW/DIG or Phone? My current set up excludes any 40 and places 20 ends too low to ground.
It'll be pretty narrow, you might do a flatter lower inverted v for just 40, it'd be nvis, but most likely still usable with great success.
Great job
Thanks.
I love this mast. How did you ground yours? From the antenna or mast?
I didn't ground the mast. Or the antenna, my equipment is grounded though.kind of. Lol. I operate portable frequently and don't ground those set ups, so figure why do it at home.
thank you for making this so easy to understand.. w2bud
Just received the pole, I guess the cam locks come separately, that pole came fast! Waiting on the guy rings, the rope, cam locks and the steaks. 😃
Nice. Yeah it comes in different packages if I remember right. Let me know how it goes.
How is it working?? I just ordered a mast! Do you have a video with you antenna on it?
Its still working great. Check out my antenna Playlist, they all went on there. I know it's been a few months, hopefully it's still helpful. Did you get one?
DOES THIS WORK GOOD? I would like this one.
It's been working great for. Check out the other video to see how easy it is to build. 10/10 recommend
Out of personal experience NEVER trust bungee cords for securing something important, or tall, or heavy! Lol
Haha. Yes, but they can work temporarily.
If you don’t use all sections, leave the smallest diameters collapsed.
I liked the idea of less weight in the air and more down low. Might be a fun experiment to compare both ways though.
SORRY TO BOTHER YOU LOOKS GOOD FOR WHERE I LIVE IN UK,CAN IT HOLD A ANTENNA ARE BEAM ON TOP
Maybe temporarily. Its not a substitute for a tower. But you could use the bigger section and not go as high and it would probably work.
Thank you for sharing. VE3ITU.
My pleasure
Thank you for sharing it. VE3ITU.
My pleasure
Thank you for a great video.
Thanks for the comment and sub.
Can you say what is the size of the pole on top the Mast? Looks much larger than the photos on the DXEngineering web site....
Not sure, the manual might say. I'd have to measure it. But it is bigger than expected. Works great though.
@@kj7iaz Thanks for the Reply
Which antenna did you put on it and how's it working out?
I use for a variety of antennas. It's great for experiments and testing. Check out my antenna series.
No antenna?
Check out my antenna series.
Thank you
You're welcome
Kept waiting to see the camera shot of the mast fully extended.
Haha. Amature cameraman
Moral of the story - always cut oversize so you can trim back.
Ain't that the truth
New federal law Sez a Ham can have a tower or antenna anywhere he lives . Woo-Hoo !
Just do it - or is that for shoes only?
I'm sure you already knew or know, if you don't need the entire height you can partially extend the sections rather than full deployment and make you sections more rigid and stronger. That's what I do with mine. Just a little info for everyone. Great video. ✌✌
Yeah it works very well that way.
Where did you buy those clamps?
The whole kit came from dxengineering.com
Just found your channel. Great content! 73 de W6OBB
Thanks! I'm glad you did.
How is it holding up?
It's great. It's been up since the trap dipole video with no issues.
@kj7iaz nice after your review I have one in my DX engineering shopping cart
@vinnyboomba9948 haha yes. My dxengineering wish list is full. Maybe they will take note one of these days and send me some stuff to play with haha.
Real world, real time, real practical demonstration. So many other talk and talk and show off videos on UA-cam. Yours is refreshing because you showed every single step of the project in real time. Nice work.
Thanks. I appreciate it.
Push that pole through from the other end (just realized that could be taken the wrong way)
Haha. Although the hardware would hang up.
I use a 40ft spiderbeam hd mast just cargo strapped to a post roughly same size as yours which is concreted into the ground n yes it whips about in the wind but only supports an efhw wire so fingers crossed it wont snap but its been up a year now with no guys
Nice. They sure do move alot with out guys. Lol
How is this mast holding up? I’m wondering if it’s suitable for permanent installation.
It's been great. The first month or so, I adjusted a few clamps otherwise it's been perfect. Rain wind snow.
@@kj7iaz thanks! That’s great. Thanks for the video.
Thanks and 73 KF0NNQ
Thanks for watching
Keep the ideas coming. LOL, wife and not liking wires all around is my concern. Thanks and 73 KF0NNQ
I'll be doing a video soon that will help with that!
Link to site?
This was k7mem.com
@kj7iaz Unfortunately that website does not excist.
Weird. I just tried it again and it comes up.
Yeah, antenna calculators are so useful.
Indeed!
I have one of these and I got two larger tubes for the bottom so it’s 60’ total. Not erected yet. We shall see
Holy cow, that'll be up there. Show some pics to the Facebook page when you put it up.
♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
Thanks
I have the same mast and those anchors i guy with 8 precut guys, hook em in, get on the ladder and push each segment up until it's all tight. In an HOA so it only goes up a couple times a month for NVIS nets! Great video!
Thanks. I'm very glad I got it. Works perfect for my setup. And it's easy enough to experiment
Hello, Thank you for the video. I would like to build a 6, 10, 12, and 15m trapped dipole and think I have the trap part down, but I would like to know how I calculate the (electrically shorter) parts of each segment. Is there a formula I missed, or is it just trial and error. Thanks again for the video.
In the video, I mention the website I used. In the calculations there is an effective length of the trap, just subtract that from the length you would cut for a dipole. As you move out, it adds up. So you'll have to keep track. It'll be close and fine tune by slowly trimming. Hope that helps. Feel free to email me if need be, I can maybe explain better.
Ok I got it, the webpage tool you pointed to suggests the effective length. "The Effective Length is the estimated amount that the next-lower-frequency leg of the trap antenna must be shortened to obtain resonance"
@@kj7iaz Am I wrong? After putting this down in a spread sheet it looks like I may not be able to use the 12m and 15m bands after the 10m band. The length of wire needed gets negative when the bands are too close together.
10 and 12 are delicate. 10 and 15 should be ok. You can play around with the diameter and length of trap. Find get a combination that has less effective length. Also. This is only one way to build a trap. Could try a different version. Or experiment on your own, a trap is simply an inductor and capacitor in parallel. You could also do a fan dipole, it might work better for the bands you are trying to use, or even a hybrid version. Use traps and fans.
They call that so-29 chassie or bulkhead connector
I'm sure you meant so239.
