Bridging Science, Spirituality, and the Modern Path: A Conversation with Cortland Dahl Ph.D.
Cortland Dahl Ph.D., a leading expert in mindfulness meditation and contemplative science, joins Andrew to discuss his work bridging science and spirituality. He emphasizes the importance of cultural translation and the integration of scientific insights into meditation practices. Dahl highlights the Healthy Minds app, which uses data from 200+ practices to show that even short, active meditations can significantly improve well-being, with improvements of 20-30% in just a month and up to 50-60% with long-term use. He also discusses the need for modern adaptations of traditional practices, balancing comfort and discomfort, and the role of compassion and curiosity in navigating contemporary challenges.
Cortland and Andrew delve into the role and significance of shamatha (stability) in Mahamudra and Dzogchen traditions, noting that while it is foundational, it is not the end goal. The conversation highlights the debate within these traditions about the necessity and extent of shamatha practice, with some arguing it is unnecessary.
They emphasize the importance of nature of mind and bodhicitta, suggesting that these practices provide stability and should be prioritized over shamatha. They also discuss the potential pitfalls of meditative experiences (nyam) and the distinction between nirodha (cessation) and nirvana, concluding that the view one holds during practice is crucial.

about the astrologers misspredicting someones death: I believe there are people that see what triggers a person in order to get them (ego) to becoming who they are. And yes, telling people that they will die, is such a big trigger that it can set people off to exhausting circumstances and at the same time it makes us fall into the biggest question there is: „why am i afraid to die?“ „what am I truly afraid of?“ It´s an invitatation to transent death and the fear of death. The astrologer became the abuser to trigger aliveness.

This conversation is a marker on the path to the dawning age of astrology becoming accepted: the next 20+ years of Pluto in Aquarius. I love how he realizes that it wasn’t just a “cute cultural thing” the Tibetan masters did when referring to astrological charts! How insulting to them actually, and how foolish to have missed understood, but what a revelation to finally see the light about it!

Finally a dialogue between two great minds versed in both the Western/Platonic and the Eastern/Tantric tradition! As an avid student of both traditions I have encountered so many profound resonances between them but it seems like there are not very many people who know and understand both lineages. It seems to me that the practices of Tantra could be considered the closest thing to ancient Platonic theurgy that is still very much alive today.

Trance ending, realising it is not your dream you are having, but an illusion of a dream what someone else put together, and when you were young, inculcated you into a system where everyone else is in the same programme and you are at the whim and pleasure as to where absurdity rules, what an experience to become aware of, and that all of it doesnt matter so much, just my little part, and even that, barely. And now, the end is near, and so i face, the final curtain. I bear witness there is no god but cause and effect and i create the cause for the recognisation of effect so help me, me. :)

No worries..."you" will reassemble your karmic self/world in about 15 minutes of earth time. Wow factor is a cascade of Overwhelming Love. I have no more illusions about figuring it all out--that's just a preferred arrangement of words. But now I trust the process of life despite all appearances of suffering.

Well that's what a good guru does to student, like measuring for a tailored suit. Almost all use rational & critical reasoning & logical methods used in traditional teaching. And standard practice & syllabus regimes. Few teachers have deeper clarity & insight into student though often they don't differentiate based on that as not needed nor deemed useful. A siddha teacher might even see past & future lives of student & current lifetime purpose but that's very rare. Often teachers, upon questions, look into their clarity to see what is to be applied for student, sometimes via dreams or divination. However I don't see much point in enthusiasm for much variation in tailoring systems for each student in initial stages. Sports Champions & the ordinary often start training within the same routine procedures, later each can variate upon talent & diligence etc. But that's what great gurus & supreme sport coaches still do, everyone goes through the paces first. A great coach doesn't see himself as a freelance personal consultant trainer. Also using other systems, diverse or modern, alongside is perfectly fine but syncretism or mixing them into Tibetan traditional systems had always been discouraged. In fact even lineages are never mixed into one syncretic whole, never mind other divergent systems.
