I was there in the 90s. Many of us on the LES loved squat life and did not feel homeless. A lot of us did not feel like homesteaders, but a lot of us were just living. We loved it because we were a family. If we had electricity (many of us did not) but if we did, we pirated electricity through extension cords and street lamps or below manholes... we cooked from hot plates, had working refrigerators, and some of us even had collections: books, records, comics... and we scrounged for food... ate at the mission on Delancey Street, went to punk shows at the Continental and CBGBs. We washed our dishes, laundry, and bathed at the hydrants... If we got evicted, we raised hell... Many of us had jobs. I worked at a record store on 9th street. We loved the squatter punk life!

Guess im a few years behind in genres. HAve no clue what emo crust is. I would think its just crust, since crust is already dark, Melancholic, and pessimism. So I dont think theres a point in putting emo in front of crust. Or Neo. Since crust pretty much ALL sounds the same. Thats why ive only ever listened to the tentpole crust punk bands. BEcause they created the sound. Everyone else are just trying to recreate what has already been done. If I was going to form a Punk band today, I would base my sound off of unique sounds when compared to crust. RAMBO ABC diablo, Amebix. Bands that dont utilize the typical crust sound or vocal styling. Sure the high and low core vox are awesome. I love bands like Enoise terror, disrupt and destroy, axiom etc. But imo the sounds bands keep trying to produce have literally all been done in so many different variety of ways, that literally you cant do anything new with it. And it all goes back to the idea of conformity in the punk scene. My favorite part of SLC punk was always the ending when SteveO meets brandy. and she confronts him on what rebellion means. She says, isnt it a bit petty to go out buy blue hair die, and punky clothes? You essentially are trying to be a punk. Thats not rebellion. Thats fashion. Rebellion happens in the mind, you just are that way. I didnt understand it when i was a young punk. But I do today. The punk rock uniform, style of music, and the reqiurments on what is defined as punk, is a limitation. The look is now a uniform. And when you dont conform to those elements, you are considered not real. But Ive met more rbels that were freakin chrisitans then i have in the punk scene. Dont get me wrong, I love punk fasion. I love crust clothing designs. Its iconic. Punk is iconic. But you can do whatever you want to do, you dont have to conform to those ideas. IMO differentiating between all forms of punk, creating the little sub categories, the little sub genres, is pointless. Be it punk or hippy punk. The idea behind it, is a punk. So using all these little brand names, is just another form of creating division. When disrupt was active, punk was just punk. Even the crust bands didnt actually call themselves crust. They were just punk. I think creating ways to divide ways to disparage, and ways to make your fellow punks conform to your ideas of what punk should be, is detramental to the punk life style. Punks also dont like admitting that their clothing choices, are not fashion. ITs fashion. This is why im moving more towards 80s punk rock ideology and cyber punk. BEcause those elements admit that punk is a fashion. and i only use elements of it now. My fashion is a mix between 80s punk, synthwave styles and tech wear. BEcause punk is moving away from what it used to mean. Its a uniform, its conformity. and I refuse to obey any dogma, punk or other wise.
