How writers make people read to the end

What are people talking about from the 2022 Academy Awards ceremony? Not so much who won best actor or actress, or best picture. They are talking about Will Smith slapping Chris Rock. What does this have to do with your writing? Everything! Do you ever wonder if people read everything you write, all the way to the end? You can stop wondering because they most likely don’t. Love the channel. Can you make a video on themes? I just do not understand how they factor in. Am I supposed to have them at the beginning? Am I supposed to discern them from the story and then reinforce them upon rewriting? What?

    • @DattaGroover
      @DattaGroover 2 місяці тому

      Thanks for the great question, @kyleg1464! So glad you're getting something out of my channel. Themes would be a great topic for my next video. Some writers start with a theme in mind, but many write the book first, decide what the book is about, and make that their theme. THEN, they will usually make adjustments in their next rewrite considering that chosen theme. Neither method of coming up with a theme is right or wrong. What matters is what works best for you. In its simplest terms, the theme is what your book is about. I hope that was helpful.

    This was pretty useful, I can’t find anyone talking about the issue of getting a new idea halfway and that’s usually the problem which leads to writers block Well I usually get a new idea for a different story but sometimes If I get a new idea for that story and I have to go back and edit it can be hard. This helped me come up with a solution for that so thank you

    Thank you for talking about the layering method of writing. I tend to agree that it does take the stress out of writing, especially helps in minimising the perfectionist syndrome, and allows writing to flow. Just that image or thought of words and sentences flowing out of your you pen is so much fun and thrilling.

    Great video. Question, what are your word counts for a novel? You said you take four days to write your first draft. For example, my last book was 281k words. It takes me about four months with a full time job to create that body of work. Thoughts? 😀

    • @DattaGroover
      @DattaGroover 8 місяців тому

      That is a long novel, @S.W.Bestwriter; I think about the same length as one of the longer Harry Potter books! A first draft will normally not be as long. It will take me 3-4 days (doing nothing else) to create the first draft of a 92,000-word novel. HOWEVER, that first draft may only be 35-40K in length. The rest of that word count will flesh out in the revision.

    Re print vs digital copies... Its great to have a digital version if you have no other options, but when I wrote my first book, there was nothing like the sensation of feeling 1.87 lbs of dead tree in my hands and the satisfying THUD it makes on a desk :)

    I think, maybe if a hero suddenly switch and the readers or watchers still likes that, maybe that because they still anticipating an explanation somehow. That is like a miracle, they are still can believe what happens to their character and still love it because they want further development and clearance of this mistery? It is like some kind of suspension for them?

    • @DattaGroover
      @DattaGroover 9 місяців тому

      It all depends in how it's done, @hackthesystem417. Then it's a cheat when the explanation doesn't come. Which I used the Ted Lasso example. In writing that wouldn't work. For some people it doesn't even work as a TV show, but it's a matter of taste and preference!

    I think the engineer’s tendency to have a solid grasp of systems and their keen comprehension for cause and effect are two key factors that play well into successful novel writing. The challenge is finding those rare engineers who also happen to have good writing skills and an interest in pursuing the arts when they’ve already invested their early career in the sciences.

I have dead lines and a writing coach and beta readers set up when I get to that point. I want to hire an editor once the manuscript is complete. Thanks for the feedback. I didn't know that! Reedsy's prices may have gone up. I have also found editors through Upwork.com. There are more lower-quality (as well as 1st-class) editors there, so be cautious. I would make sure they have good reviews and always ask for a sample of them editing your work before you commit.

    Not related to your topic but related to all writers. What do you think as to writers to write such thing: All rights reserved, copirighted and most important: NO AI PROCESSING ALLOWED! What do you think about this idea? I've heard that a group of american writers sued OpenGTP for plagiary thing. When I was writing my dissertation, I called it "threading thru" or "detangling" each time I rewrote.

    With layring idea, actually you was right not to edit it right away but make a first raw draft.

    I remember my thesis supervisor once telling me, "never be your own editor," because you are simply too close to the material to see what's wrong. He must have been right, if you said the same thing. Now on my third book (but first work of narrative fiction) I am having 2 trusted individuals - both writers, themselves -- reading the work. I have no idea what to expect, but it's important to get someone you trust to give feedback. BTW, I LOVED what you said about "layering." I didn't even know that's what I was doing, but I agree with you. It feels and looks better with each "layer"; we can often see things -- pockets needing repair -- if we revise this way. Thank you, Datta, for your videos. I find them both helpful and clarifying. 😊🌹

    How do you know that an editor is, in fact, objective? Doesn't taste factor into the equation? A curious experiment would be to have a novel edited separately by two different editors, and then to publish both versions.

      Taste and personal preference definitely factor in, but the best editors will try to see the author's style and voice and edit in that context! I haven't had two editors edit an entire book, but I have had different editors edit the same sample, with significantly different results. In fact, when choosing editors, that's a great way to do it. Have several editors do a sample of a few pages and see which one works best for you.

      The long story short is that after many tries, I only sold one Hollywood script. I hated the industry, and that I had so little control over my creative work. It's great for some writers, but not me.

    I think that a good analogy is music.....it doesn't matter what the song is "about" as much as it matters that it is a song. It don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing.
