“Sometimes I don’t even have a HOOK” (not “sometimes I don’t even want a hit”) This song literally doesn’t have a hook. That’s the genius of it.
It’s not “ I wanna thank you lowly dirt” It’s, “ I wanna thank you loaded gun, now I know I am not the only one” earlier in the song he talks about learning he wasn’t too young to be gone and that he could of died long ago. He was obviously abused by his parents and thought of killing himself. The song is about fighting for life and making it to the other side, “ one step at a time”. This is all according to Danger Mouse in an MTV video after they did the promo commercial for this song that was stripped down. Beautiful song. Definitely hits a cord with me. Cheers 🥂

I taught myself what it took to be a man, while growing up as the complete opposite during my youth until I enlisted with the US Army as an infantryman. DId 2 tours in AFG and got what I was looking for... A gun in my mouth with it aimed at my brainstem. But I keep breathing, because that's the point of breathing to begin with; live. Much has happened during those 10 years now, but I am thankful for it all. Even as I care for my mother that is in the final stages of her stage IV breast cancer as I have been chipped away into a bleak shadow of my former self, I wanna thank you; I can laugh at it now.
