      @@dvermeulen WRONG trumpet is about 50% longer than a cornet and has a more brassy tone .

      Trumpet and cornet are essentially the same, and played the same way. The main difference is that the trumpet's tubing is the same diameter from the mouthpiece until it flares out into the bell, whereas on the cornet it widens slightly all the way..."conical," as it's often described. This gives the cornet its slightly mellower, smokier tone, which I personally prefer. The tubing is actually about the same length, but the cornet is built with it coiled around more so the entire instrument is shorter than the trumpet. I dimly remember reading someplace that this was to make the cornet easier to hold up while standing in marching bands---less leverage of gravity pulling the front of the horn down.

    First, many thanks to Susan for filming. As for the gents' various comments about ragtime, surely this particular tune - a very basic 12-bar blues - hardly counts as a 'ragtime' piece?

      Reminds me rather of the Temeprance Seven - a somehat restrained blues annexed to a rather stricter tempo than usual. Just the thing for a tea dance.

      David is relatively new to me, Ivan. He’s played several times recently with the Steve Pistorius Quartet, which is livestreamed from Buffa’s Bar www.buffasbar.com every Sunday night 7-10 pm Central. A good time for me to watch but probably not for you!

      Just because they have sheet music stands doesn't mean they're playing a set score. (And this was a *ragtime* festival, not a swing festival.)

      @@carlosfroggymay7279 Thanks Dan appreciate you speaking up. Ian, I wonder how familiar you actually are with early ragtime music from New Orleans. We put alot more oil into it than alot of people who approach Ragtime from a more classical perspective. Orange Kellin is one of the greatest masters of this music still with us.
