West Gate Bridge Early Day Man Made Construction How the West Gate Bridge was built. Part 1
A tunnel would have been a much better option, certainly safer, and no, don't gimme that line on hazardous materials can't go in tunnels, because they can. I agree that this bridge is about as ugly as they come.
When the cinematography and music are better than the quality of the actual construction. Great video.
I was an apprentice with John's and Waygood during the reconstruction. I worked on the fabrication of the deck panels and the box girders girders. I visited the site during reconstruction reconstruction
I'm so proud of my and the company I worked for, it taught me so much.
Apparently the '' Box Bridge Construction '' Had some problems In England ??
Very interesting. I was there as a rescue worker for the Port Emergency Service.
what a beautiful bridge
It's only a matter of time before the bridge collapses again due to the huge unplanned weight of the steel suicide fencing along its entire length.
@@magyaradam Don't you know what time means?
@@magyaradam How trite.
From 1978 to 2011 over 900 people jumped off the West Gate Bridge by kinning themselves. In 2011 was the worlds #3 suicide hot spot after Beachy Head (UK) and the Golden Gate Bridge (USA). On Christmas Eve 2020 iI played six songs at the base of the bridge. One of them was "Ruru's Suicide Show On A Live Stream" by Shinsei Kamattechan which is a reference to a girl called Rorochan who died by suicide in 2013. And 50% of the online moniker I use on UA-cam has a reference to the October 1970 event. The other 50% refers to the suicide to two 16-year old emo (or e-girls) girls in Melbourne in April 2007.
@@darkangel2347 And?
Wtf
great old film clip thanks
I really like the porn music in the background
Westgate Bridge original design, designed and engineered by Freeman, Fox, Fcukups inc.
Freeman and Fox were experts in designing bridges to collapse. They had 2 bridges collapse under construction in 1970.
(9:52) You will hear contextual reference to the "the many [steel] boxes that were assembled in the old method". By this, they mean the method used before the collapse. The collapse was in large part caused by the construction method and the inexperience of the experts who were in charge. For those interested, have a read of the Royal Commission Report into the collapse. www.westgatebridge.org/sites/default/files/downloads/report-of-royal-commission.pdf
With a dude named Oscar Meyer in charge... :(
Boasting of safety whilst showing men without hard hats
Safety? Or is it authoritarian control? The government were talking about making ppl wear bicycle helmets when driving cars back in the early 2000s. They even thought about mandatory sun screen when outdoors and testing ppl with swabs. Now everyone dresses like clowns in their rainbow gear. They don’t care about your safety 💉❌😷❌they want control
what a shit bridge. was never designed to carry the weight it carries now. ugliest eyesore in melb, you cannot beat the bolte bridge for looks, lighting and strength. the westgate has to be the most depressing bridge to be on and looks like absolute shitday and night. the new tunnel will ease weight off the bridge especially trucks.
Fed square is uglier.
You haven't met my mother in-law...🙈🤥🤣
Best know for all the suicides (over 900) and the murder of Darcey Freeman by her fathwer in 2009 (which is our version of the Watts Family Murders in the USA).
The Weatgate Bridge is quite elegant has a modern style compared to the old old fashioned Sydney Harbour Bridge which was a copy of the Tyne Bridge in North East England........
The beast the gate the west gate lol
At 20.47 you can see the absolute shoddy concreting of the span, there is heshin fabric and steel protruding from the inside corner of the piece being moved
that toll complex, is that the building next to fishermens bend holden, now gone, but there was a tunnel you could cross under, up until about... 2002 maybe ..jesus did they just breeze over the disaster ,thats horrible they barely mention it
Thanks!
When I was in primary school North Melbourne! I remember we went on a school excursion to West Gate bridge this was after the collapse! I remember walking on the bridge as a 5 year old
I was an eight year old boy attending Yarraville State School, I saw it fall and was at the site as they pulled bodies from the river and lined them up against a cyclone fence.
ohh..
Hello, thanks for uploading this film. I'm working on a documentary about the West Gate Bridge and would be keen to use some of this footage. Do you own the rights to this video and would you be happy for us to use it? Happy to continue the discussion via email. Thanks!
Have you completed the doco? I’d be keen to watch that 👍
Why wasn't the same structural analysis applied to the box girder design before it was built not after it collapsed?
exactly. it was completely different after the disaster. completely
30:13 Just a throw-away mention of “the collapse of the span”.
Hey Adam it's Adam
Hey Adam it's Adam
no mention of worst workplace disaster etc..
The workers were the true Heroes. The engineer's and managers have nothing to be proud of. 38 Brave workers lives lost. R, I.P. there's a plate on the eastern side on one of the columns that names all the workers who lost their lives .
The memorial plaque is on the western side.
@@Rob-fc9wg Engineers were among those killed.
@@andrewwestcott9172 I said nothing about engineers.
HI there - just wondering where you obtained this footage from? We are wanting to seek permission to use it. best to email me at: nicole@shanejacobson.com.au. Thank you
MY DAD NEW ON OF THE GUYS THAT WORKED AND HAD A NIT TO DO WITH THE ENGINEER SIDE OFIT AND DAD ALWAYS SAID TO ME THAT IT WAS THE WRONG GRADE OF BOLTS THAT WAS BEING USED AT THE TIME WICH CONTRIBUTED TO THE COLLAPSE AS WELL AS THE REST OF THE OTHER THINHS YOU HEAR THE MEDIA AND NEWS FOOYAHE GO ON ABOUT. I HAD JUST TURNED 8 YEARS OLD WHEN IT OPENED AND STILL REMEMBER THE FIRST TIME GOING OVER THE BRIDGE. WHEN THOSE BOLTS LET GO TJEY SOUNDED GUN SHOTS HAD RANG OUT JUST AS THE SPAN CAME CRASHING DOWN ,MUM WAS IN THE CBD AT THE TIME THE INCIDENT HAPPEND AND THOUGHT SHE HEARD GUNSHOTS GOING OFF AND TO FIND OUT THAT EVENING NEWS THAT THE BRIDGE HAD COLLAPSED AND THE GUNSHOT SOUNDS WAS THE ACTUALLY SNAPPING AS THE SPAN CAME DOWN.
There was a royal commission and the bridge collapse was investigated by experts worldwide. This bridge collapse is still used for teaching in universities. The reason for collapse wasnt the wrong grade of bolts. The problem started when the metal half-span sections were lifted into place. The weight caused sections to twist and deform. Then when they went to bolt them together they didnt line up. To try to fix the problem they used heavy weights (tons of concrete blocks) it still didnt work so they removed several bolts. The weakened structure collapsed. 100% engineers fault, not only the design of sections, but the remedial work lead to disaster.
thatsbest
First lol
can tell it was made by the builder , only how good it is , no mention of bridge fail or reconstruction , :)

@Iranian Bob i did ,, exceelent documentary :)
Well, it’s a documentary about the engineering aspects. It did mention the collapse and the modifications that were made and the fact that the Royal Commission was critical of the design and construction methods used by the contractors, Freeman Fox.
this was a joke of a documentary hardly mentioning the collapse in 1970 and those poor 37 blokes who perished.

I was disappointed, but that's to be expected. Its a doco about bridge construction
