It's way past time, but here's an egg challenge for this year. I've been meaning to record this for weeks but weather, schedule, etc. has made it difficult to fit it in. While things didn't go exactly to plan, I had a lot of fun with this one. The video is a bit long, but I left every throw in because it does show the battle. Cheers everyone! My normal sling practice has hit a major rut. Basically I can't hit a Balearic target at 13 meters with a tennis ball to save my life. So I changed my slinging practice (for Ibiza this October) to a randomized practice. I like this method a lot! We'll see if it pays off...

the staff is too long. needs to be about 50 to 60 inches long. then you can get distance
I'm afraid I have to disagree with that. My staff sling experience is pretty limited. I've only worked with 4 or 5 staff slings. But I've found that the length of the sling is much more important for distance because that's what controls the angle of release (for the most part). As far as speed is concerned, it's only about how fast you can get the staff moving forward. Regardless of whether it's long or short, the faster it's moving, the faster the projectile is moving. So the optimum staff length will be different for everyone based on strength, height, etc. Something else to mention is the staff in this video wasn't built for high speed or distance. It was made to throw large and heavy projectiles. If you haven't seen the pumpkin video, I recommend it: ua-cam.com/video/a7gtLZcyFSE/v-deo.html. That video shows exactly what this staff sling was made to do, and it did it very well. Another point on the staff length, if a staff is a little too long for the projectile you're slinging, you can just choke up on it a bit. I actually do that in the pumpkin video. If you have any data on the 50 to 60 inch staff claim, I would be happy to see it. But in my experience, there are a lot more variables to account for than just the staff length.
@4:42 When you challenge a man to a dual but it’s 2024
I have the identical sling from him and also a pita sling. Beautiful slings he makes. I enjoy watching you on the online slinging competition. Take care!
Thanks man! Cheers! 👍
That is so cool!
Maybe you should sving it back to start with?
That would certainly be possible. Although I don't think that would really add any power because the power stroke would still basically be the same. For this test I wanted to start from a stationary position. Basically the "locked and loaded" version of a sling to see how fast I could get projectiles moving.
Whoa! Your first throws went dead straight! no curve! Must be a superior sling :) I want one!
I really like it. Now I will say that I wouldn't complain if it was 20g lighter. But what can you do!? 🤣
Great work!
where do you get your diana from?
I have a friend with a plasma cutter. There's some more details and some closer camera angles in this video: ua-cam.com/video/RItYY76EWBM/v-deo.html. You'd have to pay for materials, shipping, etc., but if you're interested in one, let me know. We can figure out what the cost would be.
Just bought one....Im excited about this. have three of Shannon's slings. made me a target, and soon i will enter the online competition
Awesome! I hope you like it. And looking forward to seeing you in the OSC!

Hi from Bings Slings I make and sell my own, I prefer the much lighter single 350 paracord web split pouch 24 inch much more, personal preference I suppose.
Beautiful slings and nice slingin 👍

The whole range set up is nice. Wear it out brother “ And the tribal man with Sling on the target’ is a good inspiration for a forearm tattoo.

Hilarious. Leave it to Joe to find a new use for slings!

A beautiful deconstruction of that pot 😂
Thats the first transplant i have seen with a sling 😂. Brilliant shot. I need to get some pine trees growing at my spot to 👍.

I'm like, wow. Lol ua-cam.com/video/9xxrqsw0-mQ/v-deo.htmlsi=xH2svFjQYAvL4NPP
LOL! Love it!
In video 160 ft = 48,8 m looks like 100 m / 165 ft in reality - anyway: That distance (60 - 70 m) and mass (170 g) I throw with bare hands. I thought the sling would be a _"long distance weapon"_ - isn't it?
The distance was measured with a measuring wheel, so the distances posted in the video are accurate. Yes, the sling can absolutely be a distance weapon. That's not what's happening in this video though. This video is target slinging. If I wanted to go for max distance with an ice ball as a projectile, I'd probably go with a slightly longer sling. Ice also isn't the best option for a distance slinging projectile. Ice isn't very dense. I know several guys who can sling stones over the 300 meter mark. It's not something I really do though.
Finally got to watch this...been dying to all week lol Not sure what it sounds like in person, but the 'ding' comes through perfectly on the YT video.
"The only existing video of me slinging." Makes this much more significant.
100%!
I think the ding is fine. No need to mess with it IMO.
It was surprising. The ding is more pronounced on video than it was hearing it in person.
Cool! I love the ding. At least you can easily tell whether it's diana or not. You Joe have improved your accuracy a hell of a lot! And your shots are powerful! Thanks for the video!
If you want it to ring louder, you'll need to have something hard impacting the face of the steel One way is to Float smaller bottom retention bolts or completely remove them. Loosen the top return bolts enough that will allow the bottom of the plate to swing. Space a metal bolt or dowel (ideally steel) behind the plate so that when the projectile hits, the plate swings and impacts the metal striker behind it. You'll need to play with the retention of the bolts and spacing of the plate and striking metal so that it swings when impact takes place but doesn't keep rocking like a pendulum or is loose enough that the wind can cause it to swing and impact the striker, causing false rings. You can also try hook bolts for the top retention bolts and/or a spring over the striker and space the spring so that its flush with the plate but compresses enough during a hit to engage the striker before resetting. I tested both ways and found bolts to be more secure but the hooks were a lot easier to work with since the plate can be removed or swapped out faster.
Thanks! Some good thoughts to consider the next time I have to rebuild that thing.
Hey Joe, After rewatching the video, I think the issue is the spacers, which could be transferring the energy from the plate into the backstop, thereby reducing vibration and resonance. Try removing the spacers and free floating the plate or using a compression spring in place of the spacers you have now if you feel the spacers are necessary. You want to create enough of a gap between the plate and the backstop so that is secure but promotes the plate to vibrate more freely. If that doesn't work, the issue could be the plate thickness. Thinner plate are easier to vibrate and therefore make more noise.
@@doloinc The spacers are the same ones I used with the other plate (the pizza pan). It's a wooden spacer sandwiched between two pieces of (thick, soft) leather. I think you're right that a thinner plate will ring out louder. I like this one too much though. It's never coming off. 🤣 I'm going to paint it soon though and will play around with another spacing configuration when I put it back on. I don't have any springs handy or that would be a good thing to try. I might get rid of the wooden spacers and try several layers of a soft material. I have a bunch of denim around from old jeans. That might let it vibrate better.
I have our kids train on 16in because it makes 18in that much easier lol
Thanks for entertaining the masses!
Can you tell me where to buy that sling?
The sling in this video wasn't a purchase. It was made by IronGoober: www.youtube.com/@IronGoober
Mount it on springs not hard bolted .
Love your work
That's awesome. Good job and good slinging mate ✊🤙.
I have an idea. Using wooden balls for slinging. They should be reusable and probably won't shatter
I have seen guys use wooden projectiles from time to time, but it's pretty uncommon. I like ice because they're a consistent size and weight, and I don't have to go pick them up. Tennis balls are very popular as a reusable projectile. They're safe, cheap, and can be found anywhere. For something reusable and more solid, stones or metal glandes are mainly what you'll see guys using. I think wood could work. But the projectiles would still need to be made. And they would likely start to break after long-term use. Even short-term use if one took a bad hit off the target. Wood also (generally speaking) isn't that dense. So you'd probably need a pretty good sized projectile. It is an interesting idea. I'm just not sure if a wooden ball would be a better option than one of the alternatives.
I forgot to include some specs in the video and it came up in a comment. The plate is 1/4 inch thick mild steel. The diameter is the Balearic regulation size of 50 cm (19.7 in). The weight is right around 19 lb (8.6 kg).
SO COOL!!
It gave the camera behind the target a good shake! How thick is the plate? It didn't move at all. And that friend of yours posts disk golf but not a single slinging video? Get him on it lol
Good call out. I meant to include some more specs in the intro but completely forgot. The plate is pretty massive. It's 1/4 inch think and right around 19 lb (8.6 kg). And yeah, I've had him slinging maybe 10 times or so over the past handful of years. He does have fun with it when he does it, but just doesn't have the interest to get into it regularly. Cheers man! 👍
Sweet video, Joe! That plate turned out great!
I gotta try slinging ice, I've tried a whole bunch of ammo types, and so far, I've found Air Dry clay is the best for how easy it is to make cheap glandes that dont need to be fired etc. You can buy a 10 pound box and make enough to last a few sessions. I hate having to worry about finding ammo after I've slung it, etc, and I like that it's biodegradable. Great video though, and what an amazing target.
Where do you buy yours from?
Ok but how did ice ball not explode when it hit it? Usually when you throw even rocks they break on impact
The ice balls are certainly brittle, but they can be deceptively tough too. It's not common, but I do have an occasional ice ball that hits my wooden target and bounces off with no damage. In this video the tray is bending so much that it's just really "catching" the ice ball. If I had the tray mounted so the edges couldn't move or break, I think the ice balls would have shattered. Either that, or I might have been able to break through the tray.
@@joe_meadmaker can you try making pykrete ice balls?
@@Амин-т4х I have. Making pykrete: ua-cam.com/video/8LPgBm1Zctc/v-deo.html Slinging pykrete: ua-cam.com/video/YYMmRjYG4iw/v-deo.html I've been meaning to do some pykrete testing again because I can sling a lot better now (the linked video is 3 years old). I don't really expect the results to be different. But I believe I'll be able to present the test better and add in some additional things.
Could it be overhand, since that motion would have been used already for spears and javelins? This is assuming that they got some training in other weapons too.
Possibly. The overhand motion would certainly be familiar from other weapons. But I think the overhand throw is the best fit because it gives the longest distance to accelerate the projectile before release.
The esthetics to me, are that his ace would be behind his arm, with eyes poking over the hide; probably with some padding on his arm underneath, where the helmet would protect his head, leaving a very small target in his eyes, notice he's not swinging overhead, but his swinging would happen behind him, his hand and his arm which are his bread and butter on the field are protected, and also intentions hidden from a would be enemy awaiting to see a movement in order to telegraph or avoid, or raise his shield to defend himself. There's an entire story told just by the appearance, the stance, and everything about this tapestry on this vase, just by glance.
I think you would need something with a bit more of a point for penatration more like a traditional Greek bullet the with the round ice balls the tray is just catching it instead of putting all that force on on spot.
Agreed. A sling bullet or glande could easily break through. I think a stone would too with it being more dense than the ice.
A brave idea there Joe, but I think I’d keep it simple less chance of one of those ice balls hitting your head. Here in the UK there is an abundance of hazel trees/ bushes in the hedge rows and that’s where I look for my staffs, having said that the last one I made is quite short about 3’4” and it is solid fibre glass which was my first spinning rod which I got in the late 50s or early 60s. It has been redundant as a fishing rod for many years. I have attached the end of a walking pole spike to the bottom so it doubles up as a walking pole. It really amuses my grand kids when my walking pole becomes a weapon of war and throw stones the size hens eggs out into the sea or lake. When selecting hazel staffs I look for one’s about 4’6” long which is about the distance from the bottom of my breast bone to the floor and with a diameter of 1.2” or there abouts. Any ways keep experimenting but maybe with a hard hat on.
You're probably right. The design of the sling came about because I was building something to fit the staff sling heads, which thread on to a broom handle. If I wasn't using those, I would have tried to find a branch or something (as you described). I do try to keep myself out of harms way as much as possible. Great story about the fibre glass rod. Definitely a versatile tool! "Any ways keep experimenting but maybe with a hard hat on." - Ha! I'm guessing you haven't seen my Stone vs. Shield video yet. 🤣 😉 It's here if you want to check it out: ua-cam.com/video/XSp7AtQKoiQ/v-deo.html. Cheers man! 👍
@@joe_meadmaker I have just viewed your stone and shield video. Me personally would not like to be on the receiving end of a sling shot stone. When out with my staff sling I have seen stones shatter when hit with another stone. They appear to explode when they collide. I can’t use a normal sling one of my shoulders has been through major surgery and the other is about worn out. So the staff sling is kinder on my shoulders. Having said that I still shoot with recurve bow though just at targets in my back yard. Illegal here in the U K to hunt with bow and arrow. My latest project was modifying a Crosman 1377 pistol which I have had for several years. The seals needed replacing as it wasn’t holding air. I acquired an old Crosman co2 ratcatcher so when I had the 1377 apart to replace the valve seals fitted the .22 barrel breech and shoulder stock off the ratcatcher onto 1377, so it is now a mini rifle instead of a pistol. You know as I get older I appear to be getting younger and dafter.
Getting some extra heat on the shots !!
I prefer the staff to be shorter, mine are from the ground to the start of my breast bone and the length of sling is about 12” so it’s quite short. So it releases the stone earlier sending it higher into the air which increases the distance. A long sling releases the stone later sending into the ground.
I generally agree. The length of this staff sling ended up being what it was because of the length of the stave. I wasn't sure how long I would ultimately want it, so I basically kept the entire length. If there's some extra length, you can always choke up a bit. No argument either with a shorter sling giving a higher release angle. I did end up shortening the sling a little. The intention of this sling was to make this video: ua-cam.com/video/a7gtLZcyFSE/v-deo.html. Which I certainly recommend checking out if you haven't seen it yet. Cheers man! 👍
This is hilarious, lol
It was fun! 👍
That was fun. I needed a slinging fix, haha. That last hit was so satisfying.
