This is cool
what if it is a big number like 17x instead of a small easy to handle number. that would mean you would have 17/3 squared. Now, I dont know about you, but that is not an easy number to calculate.
17/3 is 5,6
Wow!
Thank you for the explanation but unfortunately I lost it at the end where you suddenly had the X1 X2
A quadratic equation can have two solutions, x1 and x2. Thats because the function can potentially touch the X-Axis twice due to its parabolic shape. Therefore you have the +/- to determine the two solutions by adding the square root for x1 or subtracting for x2, as these would be the locations where the graph touches the Horizontal Axis. Sometimes, however, the function gives you the same result for either operation, in that case you'd only have one x. This is the case if the square root is equal to zero, for example with p=2 and q=1 (which results in x=-1). In short, x1 and x2 are the locations where the graph touches the horizontal axis. If there is only one x (square root = 0), the graph touches the axis only once. Also, if the content of the square root turns out to be negative, the graph does not touch the axis at all (because you cant take the square root of a negative number with rational numbers, which means there is no rational x). Depending on the level of education you're on, you might have to continue with complex/imaginary numbers, but high schools (in Germany at least) don't require you to. Did this answer your question? Don't hesitate to ask if there's anything still unclear! :)
