Trimming the fur for a subcu injectinon is NOT recommended. Removing the fur on the neck and shoulders (mane) can cause a guinea pig to get cold . When a guinea pig gets cold, it is very suspectible to URI: Just give the injection subcu and leave the fur intact.

Marti Masters unless they’re their put back into a humidity and temperature controlled environment which most cages in a vet or lab will have.

Since I have personal experience with this happening within the temperature range for a cavy 21 - 23 C with acceptable levels of humiidity, your reply is based on your ideas, not actual fact. I have raised purebred longhair cavies for over a decade. You have to be very careful with heavily coated longhairs because their fur is designed to keep them warm under normal temperatures. If you shave the fur off their shoulders, which is usually a very thick mane, the guinea pig will get cold and this increases the risk for URI: One of the most common and deadly URI caused by a guinea pig getting cold is Bordetella (broncoseptica). The mortality rate is 30% for adults, 60% for babies, entrofloxacin is the only reliable antibiotic for this, babies under 14 days have can not usually tolerate it, and the symptoms of Bordetella are often hidden to the point where the guinea pig will die despite treatment. Bordetella can remain silent for several days and the only symptom is weight loss. So, screw you and your arrogant attitude. Your video is not in line with standard veterinary care, you don't have to shave a guinea pig to give any type of subcu or IM injection. CAE IN POINT: If there are guinea pigs that need multiple injections of natrium chloride or Ringer's solution twice a day for several days, then using your shaving protocol would make a guinea pig bald because the injection sites are not re-used within 24 hours due to tissue damage. Go ahead and shave a dog or cat. For a guinea pig, it is not recommended unless cleaning a wound or surgery requires it. If you are worried about a clean spot for injection, one drop of the appropriate skin cleaner, which should evaporate in seconds, is sufficient. You simply part the fur with your fingers and you can see the skin very clearly. Posting this type of video on UA-cam is harmful Show how to do the injection, amke clear it is only for adults (for babies, the injection is pointing the needle towards the head, not the butt), and do NOT shave off the fur.

Ivomec is nto injected into guinea pigs. It is applied topically to the skin.

    • @eagleeyez1280

Marti Masters with the exception of trained veterinarians and their students watching a simple procedure. Topical treatment reacts much slower than injections for obvious reasons with the course fur preventing skin contact and as stated above, the guinea pig would be injected to show signs of a positive or negative reaction in a matter of seconds not minutes where they could observe it. Give it a topical, they’d be waiting 20 minutes and if they put the animal back in it’s enclosure too soon it could have a serious reaction or die without a vet or lab assistant near to administer the right counter medication to the reaction.

Ivomec is alawys given topically because injection casuses tissue damage. Same for enrofloxacin. In the case of ivomec, it is absorbed into the skin in a matter of seconds. I agree that for a very sick guinea pig, you can inject some medications and there are good reasonis for doing so. Your statement that you have to have to wait 20 minutes to see a reaction for topically applied treatments is ridiculous.

@@martimasters7704 i have question for u , i have couple of guinea pigs have mange mites i applied ivomec topicaly once a week for 3 weeks, i dont see any improvment i was thinking to give em injections

    • @martimasters7704

@@Mothana808 You need to ask your veterinarian if you are using the proper dose of ivomec. I use the cattle injectible, so I give 0.1 ml per guinea pig. But if you are using Stronghold, for example, which is for puppies, it comes in 5mg/ml packets, so one packet per guinea pig. But if you get the Stronghold for dogs, it comes in 15mg/ml packets. So, that's 1/3 packet per guinea pig. Ivomec is given once, then you wait 1 week, then give it another dose of ivomec, then wait 1 week, then give another dose of ivomec. If your guinea pigs still have mange mites, then you need clean their habitats more often and ask your vet to recommend a disinfectant that safe for guinea pigs. Also, you should bathe your guinea pigs to remove the dead skin. Use a mild shampoo, for example, a baby shampoo for human babies. Use warm water, apply the shampoo to the whole body, except head - don't get water in the ears - and then rinse the guinea pig very well. Dry with a towel and the use a hair dryer on the low heat setting to make sure they are dry. You have to use Ivomec. There is an injectible form of liquid ivomec and it can be injected under the skin. Some studies show that this results in a cure. However, your veterinarian should do this because it goes under the skin, not the muscle or the vein. I've always applied liquid injectible ivomec by measuring the liquid in a small syringe (no needle), and putting on the skin just above the shoulders on the neck. You have to push the fur away and put the ivomec on the skin. Let it soak in for a couple seconds. You can rub it into the skin. Your guinea pigs should be cured by now. Because they are not, you need to visit a veterinarian for a skin exam. There may be something else happening, for example, a bacterial skin infection if the mites have caused many sores. Are you sure it's mange mites and not a fungal infection?
