Canned Heat Blues, Tommy Johnson cover by Tom Muck
This is Canned Heat Blues by Tommy Johnson, recorded in 1928. He wrote some classic songs, including this one that the band Canned Heat got their name from. Canned Heat is essentially cooking fuel that he drank for the alcohol. He used high falsetto yodelling to great advantage, which I've never tried to do before, but I gave it a shot. The song is in drop D tuning, and I played it on my 1928 Gibson L-4 archtop. The guitar has nothing to do with Tommy Johnson other than it was made the year the song was originally recorded.

Big Road Blues, Tommy Johnson cover by Tom Muck
Переглядів 465 місяців тому
This is Big Road Blues, by Tommy Johnson, and is my 80th acoustic blues recording. This is the first song I've attempted by Johnson, mostly because his vocals can be difficult (with yodeling.) It was recorded in 1928 for the Victor label, and is a highly influential song. Charlie McCoy played second guitar on it, but Tommy Johnson's part in drop-D tuning is much louder on the recording. McCoy i...
Little Brother Blues, Josh White cover by Tom Muck

I'm not doing one video per week anymore, but I've been wanting to do this one for a while. This is Little Brother Blues, by Josh White. White recorded the song in 1932. I was talking with someone about Josh White a few weeks ago and it occured to me that I have not played one of his yet, so I thought I'd learn this one. I used to try to play just the music, but never sang it before. It's the f...
Alley Sally Blues, Scrapper Blackwell cover by Tom Muck

This is Alley Sally Blues (or Sally in the Alley Blues), recorded by Scrapper Blackwell originally in 1935. I'm mostly doing the live version he did in 1960. Scrapper was an awesome guitar player, and probably one of the biggest selling of the country blues guitarists at the time of his original recordings, usually paired with Leroy Carr. The song is in standard tuning, in A position capoed up ...
St Louis Blues, Big Bill Broonzy cover by Tom Muck

This is St. Louis Blues, the version recorded by Big Bill Broonzy in the '50s. I learned this years ago, but blew the dust off it this week when my other song wasn't ready yet. The original version of this song was by W. C. Handy, written in 1914, but Bill turned it into an up-tempo guitar instrumental.
Moppers Blues, Big Bill Broonzy cover by Tom Muck

This is "Mopper's Blues" by Big Bill Broonzy, recorded originally in 1952. Bill had a long and varied career, but this song came after his "rediscovery". He had left Chicago to work as a janitor at Iowa State, but started touring and recording again in 1951. I've tried playing this over the years, but haven't been able to sing and play it all the way through until now. Played on my Martin CEO-7...

This is "In the Evening", by Leroy Carr, recorded originally in 1929. I'm doing the Big Bill Broonzy version that he did throughout the 50's on several albums and in his live shows. Played on my Martin CEO-7.

This is Am I Wrong, by Keb Mo, played on my Fox Guitars Kalamazoo tribute guitar, in Spanish tuning. Recorded back in March, forgot to add to the channel.
Bad Boy, Eddie Taylor cover by Tom Muck

This is Bad Boy, by Eddie Taylor, recorded originally in 1955. Eddie was known for backing Jimmy Reed, John Lee Hooker, and others, but had some great recordings of his own. The original recording had Jimmy Reed backing up Eddie on harmonica. I was out of town for most of the week, so I pulled this one from my songbook and tried to get it together today.
High Water Everywhere, Charley Patton cover by Tom Muck

This is High Water Everywhere, by Charley Patton, recorded originally in 1929. It's played in Spanish tuning. I can't sing like Charley and don't try to but I love playing his songs. He was an awesome guitar player and performer. This is maybe the hardest song I've tried to play, other than Preachin' Blues by Robert Johnson. In addition to singing and playing, he is tapping his foot and banging...
Stump Blues, Big Bill Broonzy cover by Tom Muck

This is Stump Blues, by Big Bill Broonzy, recorded originally in the 40's and 50's in a few different versions. The most famous version is the one from 1957 filmed at Circle Pines Summer Camp, the day before he went for surgery for throat cancer. I have played this for years, but have never been able to sing and play it. I'm still having trouble, but I gave it an effort this week. I'm playing t...
Key To the Highway, Big Bill Broonzy cover by Tom Muck

This is Key To the Highway, recorded by Big Bill Broonzy originally in 1940. Charles Segar also did a version the same year, but I'm doing the Broonzy arrangement that he did later in his career on solo acoustic guitar. I had another song planned, but it wasn't ready, nor was my alternate, so I went with an old standard that I play in the acoustic ensemble. This is the first time I tried to sin...
Ramblin Blues, Johnny Shines cover by Tom Muck

This is Ramblin' Blues, by Johnny Shines, based on Walkin' Blues by Robert Johnson, which was in turn based on Walkin' Blues by Son House. It was recorded originally in 1952, but Johnny played it throughout his career and there are many recordings of it in different keys, usually acoustic. I did it in Spanish tuning (A) on my Kalamazoo KG-14f tribute guitar.
Hammer Blues, Charley Patton cover by Tom Muck

This is Hammer Blues, by Charley Patton, originally recorded in 1929. The title is actually wrong, because the first line mentions a hammock, and not a hammer. Recording engineers frequently got the titles wrong. It's in Spanish tuning key of B (tuned to A, capoed up 2 frets) and played on my Kalamazoo KG-14f tribute guitar. He probably played it on his lap with a pocketknife.
Mama, You Don't Mean Me No Good Nohow, Gene Campbell cover by Tom Muck

This is "Mama, You Don't Mean Me No Good Nohow," by Gene Campbell, recorded originally in 1929. Not much is known about Campbell, but he recorded a bunch of songs between 1929 and 1931. This was the first song he did, and is played in standard tuning. He probably played with a flatpick, but I fingerpicked it because I'm not good with a flatpick on acoustic. . .haven't really tried in years.

Incredible , would you make a video on how to play this on a Stratocaster or SG
The melody is just as haunting and mesmerizing as Robert Johnson's vocals
Such a great job Tom, just what I was looking for!
Thank you!
Excellent!
Thanks!
Thank you for keeping Robert Johnson heard after many years 👍
Thanks for listening!
another cool one ^^
Thanks!
cool ^^
Thanks!
Been trying to play this for about 50 years now by listening to the old recordings! Thanks so much Tom for posting this. Awesome 👍
Pretty authentic rendition! Nice! Thank you.
Thank you!
Good tribute to Skip James
Bentonia blues!
As far as I'm concerned, this is the greatest solo guitar performance ever recorded. I've had to delete some troll comments.
Its a Little Scary that this is Possible, But Very Interesting!
He the man! What a genius! What would American music be without the Black contribution! He’s a master.
A true genius. You nailed it!
Wow!!! Ur playing and singing are amazing!!
Thank you!
Amazing!!! Thanks
Great, but what I do , sometimes more succesfully than others, is muting the 3rd string with the side of my finger to create the same sort of effect without retuning.
That's a good idea, but it wasn't working for me. I'd probably do that in a live situation, though, to avoid retuning.
Spooky
I'm here! Just watching Crossroads.
Can you hear what Clapton heard ? ✨🎸✨☮️
Robert Johnson o maior cantor e compositor de blues raíz de todos os tempos 🇧🇷👹🤘🏾🔥🎩🎸

Thanks, Nancy!
BIG👍 Tom , sounding really good my friend 👏👏👏👏 🎸🎶🎸…..Victor👍👍👍
Thank you!
Good job
this is after the devil shiii huu😭
Awesome. Thank you.
The recordings aren’t the right speed, they’re either sped up or the equipment used to record them wasn’t calibrated correctly.
That is a myth. Big time fallacy. They are exactly the right speed.
LA MÚSICA DE BLUS QUÉ SE SIENTE EN EL AL. ALMA, MUY BONITA ES LA MEJOR DE TODAS. GRACIAS.
Very true. Thank you.
Awesome man!!!!
Thanks so much!
This is great, thanks! I've never even attempted to learn this, partly because it would have been so difficult to learn by ear from the full recording.
Sounds cool Tom, love it!
Thank you!
Love your stuff man. Keep it up
Thanks so much!
You nailed this one!
Thank you!
Sounds pretty cool! Well done.
Thank you!
this is a good one 🎉
Thank you!
love it 🤩
This is so good. I only started learning guitar about 9 weeks ago & I'm documenting my entire learning journey on here so this was super motivational!
Thank you! And good luck to you.
@@tommuck6226 You're very welcome Tom! And thanks for the great videos you put out.. they're appreciated!
